    I have barrel #34 and it is pretty tasty with a nice punch of berry sweetness, complemented with a very nice rolling wave of spice, and then finishes with lingering sweetness. I enjoy this juice, however, I would enjoy it more with a higher proof of perhaps 116, only then I could justify the price I paid. I travel for a living year round and make pretty good money but it seems everything is more expensive; groceries, going out, concerts, etc. The bourbon market has grown exponentially in the last three to five years without a forecast of slowing down. I will be refraining from purchases next year and enjoy the fruit juices in my bunker. I may buy some allocated Wild Turkey next year though, that stuff is absolutely delicious. Great reviews by the way.

      Thanks. I appreciate the comment. I keep telling myself to stop buying and just concentrate on what I have. Maybe 2024 will be the year. We will see.

    I picked this up today after finishing off the innkeepers blend. I got barrel 30 and looking forward to trying it. Great review!

      Thanks. I've heard Dickson Deadman likes barrels in the 20's and low 30's. I hope you like it. Cheers!

    Picked up this the other day. Barrel #76, WOW. This is a marshmallow, Hershey chocolate, spice bomb. Also picked up Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce on the nose and a little on the pallet . Really weird combo but it works! Great bourbon.

      It made it's way into my allocated bottles of the year. That video comes out Jan. 5th.

    Have this bottle. Haven’t opened it yet. Barrel #01. Definitely looking forward to it. I’ve enjoyed all their bottles so far.

      Barrel 1! Are you sure you want to open that one?

      @@whiskeyisajourney definitely going to open it. I saw another one at a different package store recently in my area. For whatever reason the distributor in this area must have gotten this one early on I guess.

    Nice review Peter. I have the 3 2XO Blends and the American Oak. I picked up the Gem of Kentucky about a month ago. It is barrel #50 and I like it, but not sure it is worth the $190 I paid. 🥃

      It's in my lineup of allocated whiskies of the year, but it's sitting at 11 of 14 and in my opinion it's not worth the price either.

    I am curious if you consider the price in your rating? I really enjoy the American Oak, and I am very curious to try the Gem, but hesitant to spend $200 on the bottle.

      I am inconsistent with that. My Monday series I don't think I do all the time, but my Sip It or Skip It series on Wednesday I do since that is based on me rebuying that bottle or not. Price is such a subjective/relative thing to judge. I am a school teacher and a lot of these bottles are eyewatering expensive for me, but for other people it's a drop in the bucket for them. So...I have to take that into consideration.

    • @renepirolt
      @renepirolt Рік тому +1

      I very much agree. Once a bottle approaches or exceeds a certain price point I get very choosy and will usually only buy if I know the bottle or have had a sample. Cheers and thank you for the great reviews and content!

      Good timing on this comment. I am sitting here organizing my 14 allocated bottles of 2023 getting ready to shoot the video. The prices of these bottles range from $74.99-$299.99. Most of these bottle will never be purchased by me again. The good news is I don't go through bottle very much so a lot of them will be on my shelf for years. Which makes me happy I have them now and I won't feel bad not getting another bottle when the next release comes out next year or the year after. By the time I retire I should be set for YEARS with a lot of good whisk(e)y to chose from while I continue to make vides while being retired. Cheers!

    If you are buying a bottle of bourbon for someone who has about everything, what are some of your favorite lesser known bourbons that you can find at Total Wine, $100 or less. Thanks and keep up the great videos.

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  Рік тому +1

      Oh man that is a difficult question to answer. A few come to mind. Still Austin Cask Strength, Barrell Bourbon 34 or 35, Penelope Toasted (bourbon or rye), Frank August, and my last one Nashville Barrel Company. And if the Total Wine you visit still has the ASW Bourbon Heartwood Store Pick that's a good one. I hope this helps.

    I have had the chance to try 2 different Gems, #31 and #32. 31 was pleasant, but unremarkable. 32 had a lot of flavor. Your tasting notes are different to what I remember. There seems to be a lot of variety in these single barrels, making me question the price tag.

    • @whiskeyisajourney

      Oh just wait. I shot my single barrel bourbon part 2 fight and this bottle was in the flight. The profile changed significantly from this review to the flight. It did not even taste like the same bottle.

    I found out about 2XO earlier this year from a Reddit review of one of the 2XO bottles. Looked up the company, and the marketing campaign just turned me off completely. So much copy about Dixon Deadman and basically no information about the bottles. All I got was, "You pay $200 (near me) and we'll tell you how awesome Dixon Deadman is."
    I do as much digging up as I can when buying whisky/whiskey and I've certainly done my fair share of gambling/speculation buying little/not reviewed bottles (usually scotch) but it's still based on past experience and at least a modicum of information about the bottles contents and make-up.
    SUS. Just completely SUS.

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  Рік тому

      So...have you had any of the 2XO offerings or was all the mumbo jumbo marketing stuff too much for you? I feel like Dixon Deadman is building up his portfolio kind of like Billy Walker has with scotch. So far, in my opinion he is doing good things with everything he has done. Granted he is not part of the distilling process (at least to my knowledge he's not), but his blending and tasting is on point. Thoughts?

    • @eviltrain24
      @eviltrain24 Рік тому +2

      @@whiskeyisajourney I have not. Right or wrong, I'm not in a place on the bourbon side of the whisky aisle for me to spend a $80 or more for a bottle; that is still a hard sell for me (I'm more experienced with scotch, so I can seriously consider $150/$200 price tags).
      Super stars like Jimmy Russell, Billy Walker, Rachel Barry[sp?] can all give me hope if they are attached to a new project; but if they're selling a $230 bottle for what is legally defined as 2 year old whisk[e]y, their star power alone won't be enough for me to shell out for a bottle.
      Bottom line: $230 opens up a HUGE, GINORMOUS, SWATHE of competition that Kentucky Gem has to fight off to win my money. Even if I only consider whisky's that I've never tried as the competition for 2XO, which I've also never tried, there are distilleries from all over the world that are doing a better job of disclosing information about a bottle contents and allow me to make more informed choices.
