    So many people overtighten the drain plug and the filter cap. The plug only needs to be tightened to the point where the bolt stretches into elastic deformation and applies enough stretch and friction onto the threads to prevent loosening. It is NOT much torque. Tightening to plastic deformation ruins the threads and they will come out eventually. Same for lug nuts/bolts. The cap seals on that O-ring. These are not pipe threads. 😸😸😸 The cap only needs a small snugging torque and that's it. The O-ring seals it, and the elastic deformation of the threads keeps the cap in place. I've seen so many overtightened like this one, and it will eventually crack the cap and then you have a pressurized oil leak. 🙀 Not good. When I bought my 2012 Corolla used, I replaced that oil filter cap with a brand new one from the dealer because there's no way to know who abused it in the past and how close it was to breaking with further use. It was not expensive. I highly recommend replacing it anyway after 60-75k miles even if you are the first and only owner and did all the oil changes properly from change #1. It's good, cheap insurance!

    • @joshhemingway

      Everyone should buy one to have an extra one on hand anyways! That’s a good plan around 60-70k 👍 completely agree

  • @SaltGrains_Fready

    The camera depth of field at 8:40 has everything behind you in clear focus when you are showing the filter and O Ring because the focus is setting on the distance back there where there is not any motion of objects. That leaves you and the item we need to look at in a blur. Manually setting it to close range will overcome this.

    That plastic oil filter canister was the worst design on the whole car. Everything else was actually well engineered. I had a lot of trouble getting that filter off and finally found a trick. Use one of those specific wrenches like you showed, and tap/hit the handle of the ratchet with a rubber mallet. This will slowly and gently break it loose. It's like a miracle it happened so easily.
    Unfortunately the first time I changed it I also put the o-ring in the 1st groove and after all was done and I cranked up the car, oil sprayed out all up under my engine, bottom of car and the ground. It was very scary until I figured out what I had done. Of course I immediately shut off the car and fixed that issue and I had lost so much oil I had to put I think 3 more quarts back in.

      IS there not a metal aftermarket upgrade to use in this ?

    • @HAL-dm1eh
      @HAL-dm1eh Рік тому +2

      @@SaltGrains_Fready There is but the spring inside isn't up to Toyota spec. I watched a video of a top notch Toyota tech and he suggested only using OEM Toyota plastic canisters.
      He said aftermarket plastic canisters won't last long, but I do have one on mine and it's lasted for many years and still going.
      Since tightening it to a reasonable level, I've had no trouble getting it back off, and it's no big deal.

    I have a 2007 Toyota Camry LE 2.4L . It currently has 149,266 miles on it. It always had oil changes on time with conventional oil. My question is, I'm thinking of using 5w-20 full synthetic so do you think I should use that or keep using conventional especially with the milage on the car .. Thanks

    What about those drain valves that some people replace the drain plug with?
    It seems that problems with these are few and far between. Of course the main concern is that they stick down farther than a standard drain plug and the car is low to the ground in the first place.
    Anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks for the video. For future DIY, that oil filter housing has an oil drain plastic tool that comes with the oil filter and a small gasket that attaches to the drain channel and then the drain screw. And it seems that the owner of this Corolla has lost or miss placed. Take care.

    • @mannys9130
      @mannys9130 2 роки тому +2

      My Corolla doesn't have the filter housing cap drain nipple. I don't think the 2ZR-FE came with one of those like some other Toyota cartridge filters did. The 2ZR-FE cartridge is horizontal as you can see. The cap has deep flats cut into the threads which align with the same cuts into the housing. When you loosen the cap and unscrew it, you just unscrew it barely all the way, and align the 2 flat spots. The oil drains out through those flat spots right down into the drain pan. Once the cartridge housing has been drained through those flats, you can unscrew the cap the rest of the way and there will be 0 leftover oil to splash and make a mess. The plastic drain thing you're talking about is for cartridges that are vertical, since this flat spot method won't work. The drain tap drains the cap out cleanly. Check out the 2ZR-FE cap to see those flat spots I'm referring to. 😎👍 My 2012 Corolla is very simple to drain because of them.

    • @CrowT
      @CrowT 2 роки тому

      No it does not. The filter housing that is horizontal like this doesn't come with it. The canister would not even drain if it had one. Only Toyota filter housings that are placed vertically have them.
      Edit: the comment above addressed your comment already🤷‍♂️
