I tape with a full face mask because without it, I swallow so much air causing extreme gastro pain and I hate being a human tuba. Taping makes CPAP therapy possible for me.

I've been using the PapMD tape for the last 6 months and have had great results. I use an Airtouch N20 mask and have suffered from constant mouth leaks for a long time. I really like the PapMD tape and knew it was relatively expensive, but the results were worth it to me. I tried using the cover roll tape, but it stuck TOO well and practically took a layer of skin off my face each morning. I will try the kinesiology tape when the PapMD tape is gone. Thanks, Jason, for providing such valuable content for us Papper people. We need it!!

Hey papper people! Was struggling with events/AHI ranging from 5-18 and no help from my medical professionals. After meeting with Jason or Josh-an as LEGO Man says, it was recommended to tape. That was the huge solution!!! Used tape with a full face F30 and events stayed steady at 1 per hour. Using a newly recommended P30i (pillows), my events are under .5!
There are so many CPAP machines, masks and techniques and people. Finding the right therapy is a struggle and one size doesn’t fit all. Thanks Jason and the papper community for helping others.

I have been cpapping with a full face mask since 2004 and I have suffered from dry mouth from the beginning. I discovered that my jaw was dropping, causing mouth leak. I tried the cover roll tape on your recommendation and my problem has been solved since taping my lips together keeps my jaw from dropping.
I have a full face beard and I just tape above my moustache right up to my nose and then over the bare patch of skin under my lower lip where my beard doesn't grow. I have wanted to try a nasal mask or nasal pillows but since I am retired and living in southern Mexico and since I no longer have insurance, I am hesitant to try to buy them since they might not work and that would be money wasted.
I really appreciate the tape recommendation. It has completely changed my cpap experience.

Looking forward to this video. Taping is expensive, inconvenient, and frustrating, but it works. Cover Roll TEARS my face up. I use Somnifix strips which are much easier on the skin, but they are individual strips that come in one size only, and they are expensive! I still have to put a layer of cover roll tape on top of the strips to reinforce them and to prevent leaks, but at least the strips protect my lips from getting ripped raw every night. I was developing permanent rashes from the cover-roll alone.

I do two things that allow me to use CRST every night... 1) I cut angles in the top edge so that the tape does not touch my upper cheek area below my eyes... the tape is only over my mouth and 2) when I want to release the tape I lick from the inside, it gets it off the lips with no drama. I do the tuck your lips thing but they eventually get into the tape over the night... licking helps.

I find that Cover-Roll tape tears my skin, too, even when removing it carefully. MedVance silicone tape in the 2" wide size is worth a try. It comes pre-perforated and doesn't tear your skin. It doesn't have as good a grip as Cover Roll tape, though. (Also, the complaint about Micropore tape is invalid, since it's readily available in the 2" wide size that the Cover-Roll tape comes in.)

      @ChillDfect 4 місяці тому

@@OscarFowler I'm gonna try that. Even the corners of the cover-roll tape tend to leave painful rashes on my cheeks. Like "do not touch" painful, like burns.

I have taped since I started with the nasal mask, having tried all of the other masks prior. The tape that was originally offered by my doctor was the skinny one with the precut opening. It was a joke, even after doubling up the tape in hopes of keeping it on. Then I found Cover Tape, thanks to you, LankyLefty. That tape really, truly stays in place. With your suggestion to snip a tiny slit over my mouth. I still occasionally wake up with a dry mouth, but I’m fairly sure my Sjögrens Syndrome is playing a role here. I have discovered that I cannot apply moisturizer on my face before bed, and expect the tape to hold. I’ve decided to put the moisturizer over my face, working around the tape. That’s works okey.

I chose kinesiology tape when I first looked into mouth taping. I saw an ad for Pap MD and said no way to the price. We had some kinesiology tape in the house so I cut a few strips to try. I have been experimenting with different length strips (Thanks for the how to info. My doc didn't give me the time of day because it is unsafe.) to find what works for ME AND to save a bit more money in view of crippling inflation. Yes, your instructions are spot on! I put a little Burt's Bees medicated lip balm on first (71 and my lip skin has gotten fragile with age) for protection, and I usually have to reapply because I wake up and need a drink of water well before waking. Mouth taping has prevented me from giving up entirely with CPAP. I had been on CPAP therapy for years, and my machine died. My insurance wouldn't cover the cost because my sleep study didn't show I needed it per their standards, damn what my doctor said. When I went on Medicare at 65 I was covered so fast I was "back in harness" within a month. Making the therapy tolerable as an older person has been more difficult than when I was in my late 40's.

You should talk about the stretching and anchoring method of KT tape. I learned about it watching UA-cam vids about how to use my mouth Kino tape to tape up my achilles tendonitis. When you understand how to manipulate the tape's stretch and non-stretch you can really anchor it well on your face.

I tape with the cover-roll exactly like you described in a prior video. I prepare it by folding the corners, I lay down, press my lips together to make them disappear and then press tape over my mouth. You can even pull it up a little and reapply. I’ve even just tape the middle of my mouth, but I occasionally motorboat out the sides, so not worth it. I want to thank you for all the great information.

Another video on chipmunk cheeks might be good. When I get tape working, I nonetheless get chipmunk cheeks with or without leaks (that rhymes!). Still experimenting to find a good titration (regular cpap) and not sure if the chipmunk cheeks mean I need a bipap or asv. I'm thinking that chipmunk cheeks break the suction-seal that should hold the tongue in place, so it is much more likely to fall back into the throat.

Train yourself to keep your tongue stuck up to the roof of your mouth and your cheeks cant fill with air. Do this all day long while awake too. Constantly be conscious of it, until it becomes the norm. I know some say once you're sleeping you can't control what your tongue is doing, but if you do it all the time and if you're taping correctly where your chin wont be able to drop, then it should become habit. I use a chin strap instead, but that's not the topic of this video lol.

You need to do a video on backup batteries, solar power stations. I'm in Augusta, unfortunately used up mine the first night.... We still have no power, it's been... Not fun trying to get power to charge the battery. With "fake climate change" making more radical storms more often, solar chargeable batteries are really a necessity. I'm sick, on top of having random trickles of data access, and don't feel like researching what i need to get...but as soon as power is restored and health returns it's going to be The Big Search.

Batteries are not the good home solution... for camping yes, but for power glitches/outages you need different things. I use a computer UPS so that if I get a short power outage I can sleep through it... if it's hours or days I keep two generators, one big enough to supply most of the house, with 100gallons of propane for it. Here in Texas we get to freeze for a week ever couple of years since we won't connect with the rest of the country's power grid. Get a generator, you'll be glad you did.

When I started CPAP, I already had some Hostage Tape that I bought before getting diagnosed, so I used that but found them too small for my lips. I used kinesiology tape for a bit and then switched to Cover Roll tape and have been using that for the last year. My complaints about it are mostly what Jason described, and I have started the double up method with a 2" strip going vertically down to my chin and then a 3" strip horizontally. Cutting the roll itself is kind of tedious but it is cost effective, you just need to make sure to use very sharp scissors in one smooth cut or you'll get snags in the tape or start to separate the backing. I might try one of the PAPMD bags because I'm my own "daddy"

To help hold my mouth shut I use a lumber support roll by McGuinnis with a racketball one end all covered with a new sock. Yep big feet. I place it in the “V” of my lower jaw and under my shirt. Definitely good for sleeping on my back but anything else is iffy. It also weirdly helped align my bite. No more overbite.
For air swallowing I use an adjustable umbilical hernia belt centered over the top of my stomach. I feel it helps close the valve to the stomach and no more…Tuba-ing all night.

I had my 1st night last night with a CPAP machine and no mouth tape. They gave me a full face mask and it wasn't very effective. Improvement but not great.
I kept getting woken up by the mask coming off and the noise of the air.
The interesting thing is I tried mouth taping by itself for the 5 nights before and that was also a small improvement.
I'm hopefully picking up a nasal mask today so will try that with mouth tape.
Now to the point I've been using microspore tape but in the same size as the cover roll you have. Worked pretty well keeping the seal.
I live in Australia and a roll of micropore tape which is readily available is about $4 whereas the only cover roll I can find is on Amazon and it's about $28 for the same size roll. I might try it still but obviously it is way more expensive!

Coverroll stretch works great. It stopped leaks with my nasal pillows. However, I'm terrified of nightime emesis or reflux and not being able to open my mouth. I've tried using a narrow vertical strip of tape and found I still get a lot of leaking. Can you comment on the risks of aspirating due to having my mouth taped? I know I can dog ear the tape to make removal easier but sometimes my reflux occurs before I am awake so it might be too late to remove the tape. I view this as a rest of my life situation and I don't feel confident I'll never have nighttime emesis.

I've used 1" 3M micropore tape for the past 15 years without issue. My original goal was to keep my mouth from drying out, which was causing gum recession. I tear it about 1.5" long, fold over a bit of the edge on one of the short sides to make it easier to remove, and put in on with the tab on the left side, as centered as I can, with neutrally closed lips. There are gaps at each mouth corner that I can breathe through if I need to, but it's wide enough that this never happens unless I intend to. One thing to note about micropore tape is that it's not very sticky when you first put it on, but once it warms up it makes a much stronger bond, so you need to pull it off slowly and carefully in the morning. I use Aquaphor on the lip area to reduce sticking there, and that also helps with removal sensitivity.

At my wits end as taping works really well to hold my jaw up. I tape one piece verically and read somewhere the aim can be to 'train' your musclex to hold your jaw up. Is that possible? Any science? Does it work like a static wall sit in the gym? Is there any tape out thdre that is gentle? Maybe if I put talcum powder on the area before applying tape it would reduce the stickiness? I use bleep with mouth tape, but I have thought about full facemask. Not for mouth breathing, but so the pressure will be equal inside and outside my lips, thus no mouth leaks. I've just been trying PapMD myself and I think it is not great. Definitely does not work over facial hair as it claims, and the rectangles are a little bit too small to reliably stay leak free all night. Also they are too porous with the adhesive in wavy stripes with gaps. They'd be better if an inch longer and half inch wider, and fully covered with adhesive. I'm probably switching back to cover roll stretch and then trying some other options.

Hostage tape is kenesio tape . Just with rounded corners.
Kenesio tape. The Amazon stuff, sticks to facial hair well enough if you use something like sea breeze on a cotton ball to clean any oils before application. Comes off easy enough in the morning.
The best part is: if you need to cough, it's porous enough to let the air out through your mouth and stay stuck.
If it gets a little wet from saliva, press it back to your face, it will dry and re-seal.

I tried hostage tape and it was horrible. They reached out to me and told me I needed to stretch out the strips first and then like 4 or 5 other steps and it just was not worth it VS the ease of the cover roll stretch tape.

I have been on PAP for years without taping with no problems, in fact, the OSCAR leak line was so flat that I thought that it wasn't working. Now it is a little different. Question: What do you do if you have a sudden cough or squeeze? Seems like you could blow your eardrums out. That was the first thing I thought about the first, and last, night that I taped a few weeks ago. Sudden cough, but I basically held it and slowly released it. How do you handle this type of situation?

I'm on Herculean pressures, 21/17cm PS4... I need FF mask to prevent mouth leaking... I use CRST to prevent mouth-breathing and drooling.... it also helps with jaw drop... I also cut the elastic on my O2Ring and use CRST to tape it to my fingertip... bonus! And... if I have a problem with broken equipment while traveling... I've got tape to repair it with! With FF mask your tape job does not have to be near as good... with nasal mask at these pressures I have to use three pieces of CRST.

Must add that I use humidification at max/max... tub lasts about 8 hours. I like the moisture release of CRST since I can lick it from the inside and release it easily.

How dangerous is it to sneeze with your mouth taped? That happened to me the other day and the tape held firm. It was a quite unpleasant experience that made me start rethinking whether I should tape. i’ve been using kinesiology tape.

The difference between the kinesiology tape (at least the one I bought) and the Pap MD tape is the Pap MD tape is much easier to remove in the morning with warm soapy water. The K-tape is damn near impossible with just water. Rubbing alcohol will take it off, but you have to endure the vapors from it until the tape comes off.

I had a sleep study and the doctor told me that I was borderline needing a CPAP, and he strongly recommended I go that route. I mentioned trying mouth taping alone first and he went into a diatribe about the risks. I asked him for some real life examples where anyone experienced a life threatening event and he couldn't provide anything. I also asked him why many sleep therapists recommend mouth taping along with CPAP if there are dangers. Again, he did not have an answer. So I went ahead and tried taping (without CPAP) and I'm sleeping great. I believe CPAP helps many people and someday I might need it, but I honestly felt like the therapist was pushing it on me for the recurring revenue it would provide him.

Does anyone else find that taping (or chin straps, or full face masks for that matter) aggravates the heck out of their TMD / TMJ? Let me know if you've found any techniques that help in this regard. As of now, I've found that living with mouth leaks is the best option.

Cover Roll Stretch tape removes my 77 year old skin when I wear it overnight, so it isn't an option, been using a strip of 2" K-tape covered by 2" Micropore topped with 3" Grif Grips Secure tape which appears to be like K-tape, has worked well for several months now, also use a homemade baseball cap chin strap, OSCAR leak rate with Brevida or Solo Pillow is always under 24.

Not all kinesiology tape is the same. Joint Forces brand tape had a weak adhesive and would come loose while sleeping. OK Tape brand tape had a much more secure adhesive and I could even take it off and reapply it for a quick drink of water if I wanted. Both were from Amazon and the price difference was minimal.

I’d never consider taping because of the potential for asphyxiation. I sometimes cough in my sleep. I don’t want to think what would happen if I’m trying to cough up phlegm while in sleepy mode with my mouth taped. If using a full face or hybrid full face cushion it’s hard enough trying to clear a cough.

I use a full face mask, a F30i, because if I don't my freakin' mouth welds together! I have to use a full mask to divert my air THROUGH my NOSE to avoid welding my tongue to rest of my mouth! IF I don't, I have to spend 15 minutes titrating water slowly into my mouth to loosen it up and I get sores on my tongue and everything tastes bad for the WHOLE NEXT DAY!. GET IT! I have to use a full mask to keep the tape pressurized from both sides OR the tape comes off JUST ENOUGH to weld my mouth together! BTW you helped me find the F30i and with tape it is a WONDER MASK! Take the win! Yeah, my lips flap without tape and my mouth is welded. I have tried just nasal and just pillows and my mouth welds together. Full mask with tape and I sleep like a baby and moisture does not build up on tape from mouth side and that is JUST GROSS and loosens up the tape ending welded mouth and tongue/cheek sores and 15 wasted minutes and nothing tasting right! Love your videos except on your limited tape usage view! So I have tried tape in multiple configurations and this works with a mask you found for me! I use a 3M paper "micropore" tape use for most of the same purposes your tape is and 11 cent/ft ($20/12 rolls) vs Roll Stretch .2/ft. Your tape stretches while the micropore doesn't. The Micropore allows for a slower infiltration rate that allows the tape to dry but blocks air passage. I It is hypo and if you use a slow removal technique from one side to the other, it is very friendly. What's weird is it at first it is easy to pull off but after all night the next morning it is harder to remove... slowly does it. I just cut a length of tape, roll a bit over on each end for removal flaps and BAM! I am off to sleep land!

Do not purse your lips. That only makes your face try to pull the tape loose when you relax. Just close your mouth naturally and then put on the Cover Roll tape. Then, wrap self adhering elastic surgical tape over the cover roll and fastened in back of your neck. Foolproof.

    • @Freecpapadvice
      @Freecpapadvice  2 дні тому

Not pursing lips can (and very often does) result in tearing the skin off your lips which takes forever to heal and hurts like hell. Also much better in keeping mouth leak at bay. That said.....try both and see what works for you.

    • @john99776
      @john99776 2 дні тому

@@Freecpapadvice No. I want you to try this, Jason. (now speaking as Lego Man). As soon as your face relaxes in sleep, you will no longer be holding your lips pursed, which means that the tape on your pursed lips will be put in tension by the relaxation of your face, and will try to come loose.
Try this: close your mouth naturally while you're awake and try to blow air through your lips. You'll see that just normal relaxed mouth closure is all that is needed to stop leaks - and this becomes even more foolproof with the surgical bandage holding the Cover Roll down. The Cover Roll stops the air, and the bandage allows normal face flexure and keeps it from popping loose.
In the morning, take the Cover Roll off slowly and gently, and you won't hurt your lips. I've never had that problem.
I can get 4 nights from a piece of Cover Roll by sleeping on my back so I don't drool on it, and then putting the plastic strips back on in the morning so the adhesive doesn't dry out or evaporate. Several nights from a length of bandage, too.

A dollar per night at best. If you have to take it off for some reason (forgot to take your meds, put the tape on crooked, got an important call, accidentally let the tape stick to itself or fall on the floor, you get a dud that sticks to its wrapper and gets torn paper stuck to it, or if you just wake up desperate for a drink of water), well, there goes another dollar.

My mouth was so dry before taping. I’d also empty my humidify reservoir by morning. So I started looking at Oscar and using Cover Roll Stretch Tape. As a result I no longer wake up with air jetting out of my mouth.
I told a sleep doc about it and he won’t recommend taping because the research doesn’t demonstrate it to be safe and effective. His attitude bugs me. Lego Man helps me feel better.

First, the important stuff. NEVER let Lego Man go! Now, the other stuff. I have a full beard. I'm willing to cut it down to a 3 to 5 day growth, but I (nor anyone else in the word that has to look at me) do not want to shave completely. I also don't want to join your cult just for that reason alone. Will the tape still work? Also, I haven't gotten the chipmunk cheek situation sorted out yet. If I tape, will my face blow up? 🌋🤔

You're cheap? I use Cover Roll Stretch Tape and instead of the size you use I cut the strips to just cover my lips because all I need is to keep my mouth shut. Looking at your cut, I can cut four pieces off that and multiply its use from 190 to 4 times as much. That's 760 nights!!! 2 years!!! Now who's cheap? By the way... Cover Roll Stretch Tape is a German product. The people that make Mercedes and BMWs. It is simply awesome stuff. And... us talking about it will certainly get their attention and raise the price sooner than later, so I'm buying more. I might get rich reselling some in 10 years 🤣😂

MY experience NHS gave me Resmed and full CPAP mask, in APAP, pressure automatic from 4 to 20, I used it 4 months in that configuration. But after watch your videos and others, and the best is breath by the nose due improve the Nitric oxide and nitric oxide plays a key role in facilitating erections LoL, so, I found a study where people replacing full mask to nasal pillow reduce like 8 pressure, that mean, after my APAP full mask, and using OSCAP software, study the graphs, I adjust it as a CPAP between 4 to max 15 pressure, my average was 11 . so ok, I changed to nasal pillow, and now is CPAP fixed pressure to 4 only. and I have better sleep, better AHI. took time to learn how to avoid the squirrel cheeks, we only need rest our tongue like over our tonsils "It is hard to explain without an image", and I use a very soft tape of 0.5 cm by 2 cm over my mouth. woala. and I bought the climate tube, very good if you live like me in the UK, I put it to work at 25c. woala. and no humidifier equipment in my resmed. I am sooooooooooooooooooooo happy. I sleep sooooooo well. the study said, people from full mask will reduce around 8 the pressure so it is true I am in 4 fixed nasal pillow and before CPAP with 11, and the benefit apart of the nitric oxide😆 now I can breath all day using my nose. with full mask, my nose was congested. I have more of one year very happy. the CPAP save life and make me so productive again.

I am in the UK and was given a ResMed 10 with full face, I’d given up on it, blocked sinuses, mask irritation with my beard or salvia. Following watching many videos like this and reading comments like yours, I’ve bought a heated tube, humidifier and nasal pillow mask. Can I ask what pressure settings you switched too and humidity settings? Also what tape brand do you use?
