    The only thing missing from this movie was more Tony Todd and more brutality…you can’t compare a simple throat slash to being slit from groin to gullet

      Agreed, it was way too much blood especially that bathroom scene, when they see the blood coming down the side of the sinks and the stall instead of pouring down, we should of heard the tearing of flesh and blood splurging down in drops, even without hearing the girls screams, seeing and hearing that would of been fucking wild

    A candy man movie should be tense, you should question if he’s real, the protagonist sanity should be put to the test and deepest lines in the movie should be delivered by the candyman (allowing everyone to know why he is a necessary evil , even if you don’t agree with him). And you should hear an orchestra even if they don’t over do it.

      This, me and my friends still talk about the 1992 and theorize if Helen actually did kill all of those people, even if it isn't true, it's really engaging and a testament to the filmmaking directing and acting of the original. The film is shot through her PoV, so it's basically her story and as we all know, we are all the "Heroes of our own stories" So Helen could of just been crazy and a unreliable narrative. The 2021 film should of played with this, to the point where by the end we don't know if Anthony is telling the truth or if he is just crazy as hell. Most of the kills barely had any cause and effect with Anthony which is the issue, they could of even played that into the Police Brutality aspect with the police detective searching for Anthony as bodies pile up around this "starving artist"

    I had the luxury of obtaining an early script draft of CANDYMAN (2021). It's from 2018 to let you know, and while it's also short (89 pages), it's WAAAY better than the movie and I'm stunned at how much was changed. The Anthony, Brianna, and Anne-Marie characters are the only people who are carried over into the final movie. Everyone else is different. You still have the storyline of Anthony and Brianna being artists. Anne-Marie had a few more scenes and appears much earlier than in the finished film. A notable difference is that Helen Lyle is put to much more use here. Anthony grows obsessed with her and accidentally summons her and when she first appears to help when he's being beaten up by drunken college dudes, we assume it's Candyman because of how she "appears like him". But when Anthony is in the police station being accused of trying to murder his mom, Helen reveals herself to him. She's the "Candyman" of the story for the most part which is what I'd expect a DIRECT SEQUEL TO THE ORIGINAL to be like given how it ended with Helen being the new legend of Cabrini-Green. The ending is mostly the same. Brianna is captured and she is taken into the police car and she calls out the Candyman who comes to her rescue. But there is an epilogue scene between her and Anne-Marie that occurs the following day that closes out the movie rather fine, but it's a bit lackluster because Anthony isn't mentioned at all which was odd. Just "how are things" and Brianna deciding to close her gallery, yada yada. Disappointed how much has changed for the WORSE when they had something really good. If anyone wants a copy, email me at devontehuntley2@gmail.com.

    This film worked for me, like the 2018 Halloween sequel. This movie was its own and respected the original, there's no way to recreate a classic and this was a great modern expansion of the original's mythos.

    • @BlackangelKatakuri
      @BlackangelKatakuri 3 роки тому

      But that doesn't mean you don't try. There are filmmakers who could have easily pulled off the same kind of tone as the original nowadays hell why not get the creator of the original story that Candyman is an adaptation of who also served as an executive producer for the first movie and is a competent horror director and writer in his own right? Why did Jordan Peele get to take the helm? That man couldn't scare a toddler and is way too obsessed with his narratives than making entertaining and scary movies

    3:00 I'm sorry Chris but what exactly was so charismatic about Helen Lyle? Is that a thing now we look for in our main protagonists? I thought what made Helen, Anthony, and Brianna interesting is how they felt like real people. Real people shouldn't have to all be "charismatic" in order to be interesting characters.
    Also, I don't think it's fair to compare 2021's Candyman to the 1992 version on the basis of what it wasn't versus what it is. I just don't think that's a fair approach when comparing the two.

    • @travisgames6608

    I think Chris is being a bit too harsh on the cgi on Tony Todd. I was afraid the de-aging would not look good, but it actually looked really well done. The textures, lighting, and subtle facial movements when someone speaks were all executed very nicely. Yes we wanted Todd in the film more, but he's 66 years old and has other commitments, so this was in a way a passing of the torch to Yayha, who's becoming a big star and has a lot of A projects ahead of him such as the Aquaman Sequel and the new Matrix film.

    I think the gentrification/white on black violence angle worked ok, but the script could have explored the ideas with some better structure.
    I think Anthony being a less-than-perfect, perhaps even exploitative artist was a smart move (even if it's a bit similar to the original movie), but that final act just feels too busy and in-service to smart themes & imagery that aren't really poetically woven into the story.

    I actually like the fact that the young high school girl had no contact with Anthony. She was probably there viewing the show for school, but it shows you how the story spread. • @ASSARAPTUS
      @ASSARAPTUS 3 роки тому +6

      That may be true, but that could've been left to be Either the Opening Scene of the movie, or Left Out entirely because Anthony is the focal point and the filmmakers really needed to focus more on his life/mind falling apart like Helen.
      Also cut out Brianna's backstory about her father. And have Anthony confronted/harassed by the police after the first murders start. That would've been more effective than having the crooked cops show up last minute.
      Lastly have Tony Todd have more of a presence instead of a groaning ghost. I would've been cool with him just being the voice in Anthony's head 🗣️ before he reveals himself.

    Seeming to make Candyman an avatar for racial vengeance at the end was confusing to me, because despite the fact his origin story would make that make sense, in the original movie and in this one, he's not actually particularly focused on killing white people. He just kills or messes with people who say his name, including black people. In fact, didn't the first film mention him castrating a young black boy? Why would he care now, unless he's just using the climate to perpetuate his name so he can exist again?
    Also does anyone else wonder if the ending was a reshoot? Because it's formatted and shot so different from the rest of the film. Looks way way more sharper and HD than anything that came before it. It would explain why certain things seem to just hang in the movie without a payoff, like Parris' character's dad's death, which yeah, was brought up out of nowhere but didn't lead to anything.

    I watched it Saturday. I had seen your review. I wanted to really love this because - '92 Candyman is a favorite .. but I think that there was another message - which is ok but it wasn't scary - after Anthony leaves his mothers house it turns into a bad slasher until - his girlfriend is in the car - it's like where is that 30 minutes of film - it's like "I guess we need to give you some horror" that makes no sense. They were only 20 people in the theatre with me - when Tony Todd's face appeared we stood up and clapped - spontaneously - which afterward made me feel worse. I went home and watched Candyman.

    Chris was right this movie was messy. It had good elements that I personally enjoyed so I’m assuming rewrites or studio interference led to the mixed themes and disjointed ending. Between different reviews I’ve seen, people seem to mostly like the same elements (cinematography, narrative framing with the puppets) but the story and ending didn’t mesh well. Viewer outlook will depend on if the positives outweigh the negatives for you
