  • San Quentin prison sits on a secluded bay just north of San Francisco and inside the walls hosts the largest death row population in the United States. But for it's general population, San Quentin has been a pioneer at using sports programs to aid in rehabilitation. Perhaps its most notable is the tennis program, with a full tennis court sitting right in the middle of a notorious prison yard. We spent a morning with the inmates to experience a truly unique sports culture.

    Very heart warming story. There are still decent noble people in this world like those tennis players who come to coach the inmates.

      PPPSSSHHHH you make me sick. So one of those guys robs and assaults/kills your loved ones, then how do you feel? You're just as bad as them. You belong with them.

      Ocean James Maybe you should read his post one more time, he was not talking about the inmates being decent noble people.

    • @Kollin011

      Ocean James I have more animosity and hatred for violent criminals than you and yet I still have compassion and sense to realize that some people are dealt a bad hand and do bad things. Some kids are born into bad families, communities and grow up hungry. Some are molested and become sociopaths as a result. You sound like you have little empathy and to me you seem just like the prisoners seem to you. As an empath I'm always amazed at the harshness of you "normals" You are unaware of the damage you do. If you never hurt anyone or did anything wrong then feel free to judge people as much as you like.

    • @TheOceanJames
      @TheOceanJames 9 років тому

      Kollin011 Sorry for my lack of empathy, really, let me apologize for not understanding what it's like to tie an 80 year old couple together and beat them to death for outdated electronics. You are a scumbag and you look like you have done your fair share of hard time.

    this is how prisons should work put the people who work hard to get better with good people and theyll do better. keep them with a bunch of horrible people trying to live in violence 24/7 and they wont get any better just get dragged down and become another statistic

    As a former C/O myself, I fully support this idea. Is all about keeping them out of your hair. I think they should also let them have cats and dogs, to some degree also. Anything you can do to lower the tension on the yard.

    That yard looks more like an outdoor sports complex than a prison. Not a bad way to serve a sentence with a game of tennis everyday. You almost feel like you're at a high school or college track. All for the better. This is like Special Olympics, only this time for inmates. It's nice to see all these convicts get rehabilitated through sports. It gives them an opportunity to still discover talents and what they can do after where they initially made a brush with the law.

    • @MrDiamondstandard
      @MrDiamondstandard 8 років тому +1

      +alexbballboy the whole point is you wouldn't expect tennis to be popular in prison, but its bringing people who would normally not want anything to do with each other together. If the stereotypes of prison basketball are true it does the exact opposite

    • @alexbballboy
      @alexbballboy 8 років тому +1

    you guys saying "thats not punishment they have to pay for their crimes" have it completely all wrong. First off, tennis does not offset the fact that their in a dangerous maximum security prison for years, their paying for their crimes. The point of these sports programs is to help keep them occupied which help keeps them from going crazy, which help keeps them from assaulted inmates and most importantly STAFF. Thats why the guards are all for these sports programs, it helps keep them ALIVE. Want to go back to the days of prison riots in the 70s and 80s where prisoners killed guards and took hostages because of that "put em on an assembly line and punish them" mentality? The guards that work there certainly don't.

      +arrestmeimwhite The whole point of putting someone in a max security prison is to deprive them of access to all the good things they'd have in the free world, both as a form of punishment and as a form of shielding society from them. Tennis _does_ offset the fact that they are in prison. Bringing into prison the freedoms that you took from them when you jailed them makes their serving time completely pointless. Might as well just leave them out, since they are no longer experiencing the negative aspects of imprisonment. Not to mention the dangers of this apparent rationale of appeasement. They are violent criminals and must be treated as such. If giving them tennis is a way to keep them from breaking things, then I regret to say that the state is bowing down to racketeers. As for the guards fearing for their lives, I thought this was a "max security" prison, meaning prisoners don't have much leeway with regards to anything, including activities that could endanger guards...
