Star Fox 64 - Mission 2B - Sector Y

- After various software and hardware delays, I managed to make this in about two hours with the help of some friends and another computer.
You may notice you can actually hear sound effects now, this is because I remembered that I could turn off the music in the game. I also tried to have the text last a big longer. Overall I hope most of the technical problems have been fixed, but for some reason I can't figure out, when I fly near the right of the screen the Arwing sounds get quiet. I guess there's something wrong with the stereo input on the capture card. I'll try mono sound next time.
Enjoy. Music credits are now in the video.
Edit: Those bombs that I say cannot be destroyed, can be taken out with a well placed charge shot. This is rather difficult to do though. You can also get some extra kills if you do a loop at the portion where you choose to go above or below the enemy carrier's fuselage. You'll remain further back and can hit both sides for a bit. A bomb right there helps as well.
Love the obvious Gundam references this mission had
I like to think the reason you go to Aquas for over 100 kills is because if you kill enough bad guys, then enough of the Cornerian fleet survives to help out on Katina. So Star Fox decides to leave that to them and goes for the next-nearest Andross-controlled planet instead.
....and then in the Aquas video Concordant says the same thing.
haha
As long as you're looking at comments anyway, great LP, man. Probably my favorite ever. Perfect blend of comedic and informative.
To my knowledge I've read every comment on these videos. But thanks.

They had the same voice actors come back for the 3DS remake, but yeah I guess after over a decade it might be hard to nail the same inflection you did earlier.
It's explained somewhere that getting over 100 in Sector Y frees up enough of the Cornerian fleet to be able to take Katina by themselves, allowing you to ass around in Aquas at your own leisure.
I love the use of BSG music here. Surprisingly fitting.
you can lock on the mech when they show up, you just have to keep the cross hairs focused on it while charging a hit, if you time it right you can get a +6 bonus if the hit expands to hit the turrets on the ships
Awsome, love these videos. Thought about doing my own with other levels but don't wanna steal your ideas. Can't wait for the next ones.
This is really well done and fun to watch, nice job!
When this game came out, I actually thought all those blocks looked like pretty well-rendered starships. Of course, this was *way* before when Homeworld came out.
That was recorded back when I had used a Gameshark to get all the medals on Expert mode. I think the last time I used a Gameshark playing this game would have been back in 2002 or something.
I would go regain it legitimately, but expert mode isn't as fun with wing snapping killing my buzz.
6:20 "Slippy's hit!" *mech explodes*
6:32 "Dang! I'm hit!" *another mech explodes*
Umm, guys...Are you sure you know what side you're on?
It's like when I see my cat bump into something and I go "owww"
"Don't Party Just Yet."
There is something interesting, You can squeeze in a few extra hits when you have to go over/under the ship near the beginning of the level, you can kill everything above then crash through the ship and kill everything below XD. Love the vids, keep up the good work XD
The empty space exploding is probably flak fire used to block enemy attacks. Coincidently enough, you see this effect quite often in the space battles on Battlestar Galactica.
I think your squad is the spearhead for the Cornerian forces, so if you kill enough Venomians enough of the fleet survives that they can go help Katina while you continue on.
The reason an atmosphere would be unnecessary is because the effect is independent of air resistance. It relates only to an object's center of mass and the geometric distribution of mass relative to that center. Imagine yourself throwing a short rod, and then a longer rod, and counting the number of rotations in the air for each one. With an equal amount of force applied, there should be a greater number of rotations for the shorter stick. It's the same principle. :)
I see you got all the medals on expert. Well done!
I think Fox is talking about the squadron of Cornerian battleships you fly past in the beginning of the level. You repel the initial Venomian assault and then spearhead a counter attack deep into enemy lines. Destroying 100 enemies ensures the Cornerians can mop up and you don't /have/ to help Katina.
Oh how I still love this playthrough...
The Cornerian fleet is actually the large objects resembling debris floating in space at the start of the level.
That's just how badly the fleet is losing...
I never watched BSG until just this year, during the pandemic (while living in Vancouver, coincidentally). Hearing the music used here instantly reminded me of this video.
The music in some of the earlier seasons was the high point for me. The later seasons I get the distinct impression the writers were making it up as they went along, which is a shame.
@@concordat Also just recently finished watching BSG and it occurred to me that this video was uploaded while the show was still airing.
The fact that there's no sound in space is frequently ignored by... just about every single video game, movie, and TV series that has battles in space, so I don't think that anybody has a problem.
I’ll be very honest, I only saw Bear McCreary’s name as the lead composer for the score in AMC’s “The Walking Dead”.
Never knew his resume included Battlestar Galactica...
The text commentary reminds me of Vman when he plays Mortal Kombat.
I don't know who that is, but thanks?
Falco: HEY EINSTEIN-
Slippy: Enemy shields analyzed.
Slippy can't shoot, AND interrupted falco.
nice one adding the Battlestar Galactica music at the end, love it
It's likely that the wings have built in RCS modules to accompany the G-Diffuser. Widening it would give it a far better ability to turn and twist around.
ah yes, my once every 3 years visit to the concordat star fox walkthrough
I'm on my 3 yr visit now.
"Let's back up the squadron..." Yeah I agree it's a little confusing to hear that in reference to capital ships, but other fictional universes have done that too (i.e., Death Squadron from Star Wars).
That sounds reasonable. And the reason why the guys you miss don't come after you, is that your wingmen, or great fox(if by chance they are gone) shoot the enemies.
"moar liek use bombs wisely lol"
lmao dude the commentary is awesome
these vids just made my day
a note to anyone who wants to fly inside the 2 black holes in the ship at 2:10. never try to fly inside, you'll take a shitload of damage, possibly lose a wing, and you can't fire at the ships but they can still shoot you.
I don't know if anyone told you, but the Team heads for Aquas because they backed up the squadron (the Cornerian starships). If you don't get 100 points, then you "fail" to back up the squadron and must back up the Katina outpost, which if you DID get 100 kills gets backed up by the starships you just saved.
Falco: Hey Einstein, enemy shield analyzed.
Slippy: Hey use your own lines next time, Falco.
I think the Starfox squad is spearheading the counterattack, with the Cornerian fighters and battleships mopping up what they miss. By destroying enough enemies there's less the fleet needs to do and can head to reinforce Katina.
When I first played this level as a kid the first thing that came to mind was Gundam Wing. Probably why it was one of my favorites.
Mobile Suit pilots in this level: "Its the Arwing!!!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! *gets annihilated by the sheer power of the mobile armor known as the Arwing*
Those mobile suits in this level look like they could be GM Commands.
Yes, I included Lylat Wars in the tags with this in mind.
I believe it, along with the SNES Starfox (named Starwing in Europe), was because someone else held the copyright to the name Starfox in Europe, but not in Japan or the US.
Excellent combination!
Actually I'm only pressing once for every three shots.
If you press and hold the A button, the game fires a burst of 3 shots and then starts charging.
I simply hold the button just long enough do the burst and let go, and then press again. It takes some getting used to but it is incredibly helpful. It doesn't do too well in areas with slowdown (usually boss battles) so tapping like mad is still useful.
the first song in the beggining of the level is Prelude to war, from the BSG soundtrack.
There is. You can go in 3 directions in Sector X and 2 In Meto. They both have warps.
Your wingmen get repaired based on your score. Get a higher score, they get repaired more.
LoooL. I saw all of these videos a year ago and they still never get old. ;D
The extra text makes this a lot more enjoyable :P
@Fox5975 You gotta boost constantly to keep James in sight, but not so much that you get too close to him so you can't react to his turns.
just so you guys know, you CAN enter the 2 black areas those ships come out of, but you will take constant damage and will be completely vulnerable to the fighters above and below the ship =/. just don't attempt it. you'll be left with a very small health bar when you finish.
Lol, i love your captions! Your also really good.
Haha, when Peppy, Falco and Slippy were in formation, Peppy was shot, and he... did a barrel roll.
I think that red mech (where Peppy says "He's quick, be careful!") is a reference to Char Aznable.
You either fire them before they can lock onto anything, or you can hold Z and R at the same time to prevent it from locking onto enemies.
I figure the reason 100+ kills gets you to Aquas is because you apparently killed enough enemies to save the Cornerian Fleet (which are those blocky-ass ships at the start of the level, and others like them, I think), if you don't get 100 kills, you just didn't do enough damage, and Andross' forces took out Corneria's fleet anyway.
All medals on Expert.
hey, it's the first level of Starfox: Assault!
On the first planet.
You need to keep Falco alive.
You need to fly through the arches on the water.
Well to be accurate, deploying air brakes would do SOMETHING, but it would be so minuscule as to be irrelevant except over enormous distances.
In later games, it's stated they do that.
But yeah, I can imagine the army loses Andross and it all goes to shit.
This level's fun to me. Wish the boss was harder, though. That "big bad mech" boss was a wimp.
Nice to see Star Fox fighting a bunch of Zakus and Gouffs
Retro is short for retrograde rocket. They are small rockets on spacecraft that 'provide thrust opposing the motion of a spacecraft, thereby causing it to decelerate.'
There's no air in space, so deploying the flaps and air brakes would do nothing. They never refer to the brakes as "retros" in this game, but they did in the SNES game.
@IkeOfTheBlueFlames When on the scale of buildings, they would be gigantic and expensive targets that could be easily hit by significantly cheaper aircraft bombs or artillery from great distances. When on the scale of a tank, they have significantly more surface area and moving parts, making them have overall less armor and be much more vulnerable to damage and malfunction. They'd also have a taller profile than a tracked or wheeled vehicle.
In space there's just no reason at all.
I think you go to Aquas because by destroying enough enemies the Cornerian fleet is able to defeat any enemies you miss and go to Katina to back it up.
Course thats just a popular theory Ive been hearing.
Your comments make this entertaining to watch. Funniest line in all these videos, "Oh no you didn't just shoot that green isht at ME!"
Just reminded me of Peppy on SNES Starfox--"Retros! Fire retros!!"
Dude, I JUST realized, the map screen music near the start is actually from Assault. =.= I'm so ashamed.
And as Cloud8745 put it, "This stage got Gundams!" XD
@Bubblefig What do you mean?
Sometimes I fire charge shots by accident without really any charge-up time, so I'm not too certain myself.
Seems like for every 100 you get in a level, you get an extra life at the end.
@HisDivineShadow245 They're old but GOLD.
A lot better than the standard "Let's play videos" and the microphone fail extravaganza.
@Zeuts85 Wings serve absolutely no purpose in space. (The space shuttle has them for re entry of the atmosphere)
Space = no friction and vacuum
No friction and vacuum = no drag or lift.
No drag or lift = nothing but thrusters needed.
The Arwing's design would imply it to be only able to fly well in air, not space. In space it could only go forward and not turn at all because it only has that one thruster. Flaps require air to maneuver the plane. There is no air in space.
This is just an idea, but I think the reason those wings moved is because the thrusters on the tips will have more effect on the rotation of the ship if they're farther out, now, I'm a bit tired (4 AM and all that) So this may be utter crud.
@zehawk It is in the audio menu in the game, so it doesn't matter what is running it.
Getting all medals on Expert gets you the different menu.
I believe that those missiles and background mechs can, in fact, be taken out. Just fire a bomb at 'em. I always do that to net myself some extra points on this level, makes getting the medal a little easier.
Holy hell this video is ten years old now?? Well anyways, O Mighty Starfox Sage, I consult thee...
Why the hell am I having such a harder time with the 3ds version of this game? I’ve never had a problem medaling Sector Y on the classic, but on the 3DS version I can’t get it after restarting three times now!
This game has pretty obvious slowdown at certain parts when ran on the N64, and presumably much less obvious slowdown at other times.
It's possible the 3DS's more powerful hardware is just running the game slightly faster than usual.
There's also the high resistance on the N64 joystick, which makes small adjustments easier (for me at least).
Finally, maybe the screen's just too small?
the missiles that cruise close to your ship in Sector Y
I mean, I mention somewhere that I wiped my game pack's memory to get rid of the high scores I got doing that, and I recorded that opening sequence before I wiped it.
Heard you can kill the missile with a well placed charge shot
It's funny when u shoot those 2 battle mechs, Peppy and Slippy scream. Wow.
Man, those comments of yours are halarious, concordat - pointing out everything, including Slippy's obliviousness, and about who's going to pay for all of the damage.
wow that was quick
nice job
LoL @ the soundtrack! I guess I am not the only BSG fan. Nice touch with the Colonial Anthem at the end.
3:57
OMG! You just killed Char! You bastard!!
@se7en00110111 Yeah that's probably why graphically Star Fox 64 aged pretty well, since all of the models are of space ships they don't need to be particularly complex.
And that reminds me, I have had Homeworld sitting on my desk for some time now and I keep forgetting to play it.
Melee in space?! They'r'e fighting with guns and lasers. XD
i think the ships that don't have turrets or Andross' image are the Cornerian fleet. and seem pretty defenseless against even a magnum or a pistol.
They use a HP system obviously. The ships remain fully operational even at 1 HP, then it experiences catastrophic failure of all systems at 0.
That's no zaku, boy. Do you hear me? No zaku!
wow, I can see what's exploding in the real N64 version. :D
Falco would say: is that the best you can do! if you suck. but we don't suck... right?
Bear Mcreary + Star Fox 64 = *nerdgasm :D
The mechs in this level remind me of Zakus from Mobile Suit Gundam.
man this is funny, ur text makes me laugh
They feature that little scientific fact in the series Firefly.
LMFAO "so long to the boss with the crazy New Jersey accent"
That's kind of unfortunate, but understandable.
Fox: hey where did the 64 go!
Peppy:It went for a BARREL ROLL.
Fox:Uhhh I think it just went to another N64
title screen for another game Peppy.
I don't use it anymore. These are old videos. I intend to redo them in higher quality with better captions some point in the future.
press a.
hold 'till its full.
then press it again in the right moment, and hold.
Repeat
HEY EINSTEIN I'M ON YOUR SIDE
@EvilMoonwulf I just wish I still had the raw recordings, so I could remake a sort of "HD" version of these using something besides Windows Movie Maker.
NEW JERSEY ACCENT?!?!?!?!
I live in New Jersey! Nobody talks like that!
