Great shop, excellent choices! Going for a little walk daily works wonders also. It’s good to be able to focus on your health now that you’ve the bit of extra time!
Good for you Karen for taking your health seriously and starting healthier food choices. Incorporate some physical exercise (10 minute walk after your main meal is a great habit) and you will feel so much better in a short while 👏🌷 I started swimming in March. Once a week in a lovely old swimming pool at the Rijksmuseum here in Amsterdam. Visited that pool for the first time 40 years ago when I just moved to the city as a young girl and now I am doing aqua jogging with seniors 😅 I am 59 so entering into a new phase.... anyway I like being in the water so much that I found more lessons in different swimming pools and now I go 3 times a week!!! First thing in the morning before work... perfect 😊
Well done! Fresh food is unbeatable. This time of year we should eat more fresh vegetables and fruit. The frozen or anyway-preserved stuff is good enough in the winter and spring. What a brilliant way to begin a fresher life' at the summer solstice!!! xxx
It's great to eat fresh food - I'm obsessed with white cabbage since a Caribbean chef showed me how to use it in all kinds of recipes - but as others say exercise is also important. Now you have Callie you have the perfect excuse to get out walking every day. :)
Try not to buy the pre flavoured meats as their salt and sugar content is high. Look at the ingredients probably also has stuff you cannot even pronounce. . Healthier to just buy regular meat and then add a steak spice to it yourself when cooking it or your own simple bbq sauce. If you wish to preserve all that basil all u need to do is put the basil with some olive oil or a neutral light oil and a bit of garlic and salt in a food processor and then put the mixture in ice cube trays to freeze. Once frozen the cubes can be put in a small freezer bag and you can these use the cubes to make pesto pasta or even use a cube in your lentil soup or you can even add it to an omelette. The brown skinned pears also get soft if you keep them on the counter a few days.
Great to see you doing such a healthy shop! One of those pork steaks will give you enough protein for two people if you slice it and add it to your stir fry. Cabbage is good in stir fry, as will be some of the sweetcorn if sliced off the cob. You’ll be surprised just how far you can stretch that food shop by using so many veggies, rather than just sticking to roasted carrots. You could have a lovely roasted veggie dish using a variety and air frying them as you do carrots. Then some cooked potatoes, broccoli, carrots, peppers, mushrooms, onions and sweetcorn, topped off with a dressing of your homemade mayo, would all be delicious as a veggie salad with a piece of chicken. Add a bit of iceberg and sliced tomato with basil as a side. You can roast tomatoes in the air fryer, too, makes them sweeter. Lots of variety there - good on you!
Great healthy haul. I'm doing the same thing this week....I've bought in the sales, a set of bathroom scales. I tended to freeze my bread in batches of two slices in sandwich bags...I take out what I need from the freezer, otherwise it will go mouldy before I get to to finish it :)
It's the secret that the giant food companies dont want us to know - eating healthier, unprocessed food is cheaper and better for us! Shhhhh - pass it on but quietly 😂
Something you might find, after you have met virtually with the GP and you get lab tests done, is you may have to adjust what you eat. Even certain healthy things may not suit your current health and how your body metabolizes food. I and my sisters are Type 2 diabetics. You would think with us having the same disease and being siblings we would metabolize food the same way but we didn't. What one could eat, another could not. My older sister could not get hers under control and died from diabetes. I went Keto and then after chemo I had to restrict even more so I can now manage without medication. My two younger sisters still have to manage theirs with medication.
My daughter has coeliac disease and type one diabetes- she’s only 11. I have reduced the amount of carbs she has anyway and if she does have a load of bread it’s a lot more than £1.55! She favours the warburtons sliced square rolls though and they’re a lot lighter on the carbs too although still way over £2 for a pack of 4! She has one per day in her packed lunch. We did have to naturally cut back on snacks for her anyway and introduced more healthy ones as a way of improving her health and blood sugars. Her diabetes team (consultant, dietitian and specialist nurse) still say she’s overweight but she’s only 11, started her periods a few months ago and starts secondary school in September so I do feel the weight will come off her quicker once she’s having to traipse around from lesson to lesson! Shes not the most active and I do work full time and can’t drive so she and her twin brother don’t do any clubs or anything on evenings but she’s not bothered anyway. She’d rather go to the park with friends or have a friend round/ go to their house. We’re lucky in that she does have a few friends from school living close by
With the potatoes, cook them & allow to cool, it helps insulin resistance. Also add cinnamon to meals. It helps regulate blood sugar, improving insulin sensitivity and slows the absorption of glucose Just a few tips xxx
Eat you meals in this order: lots of greens (a lovely green salad with simple oil & vinegar dressing), then protein then good carb, small portion (sweet potato is great) - this helps glucose spikes. And always a short walk after meals if possible. And when you eat carbs, never eat them alone - a good fat & protein with it. 💫🌿
Hi Karen! Wonderful shop! It would cost most of the $26 for just the meat here! I know what you mean about the hard brown pears. You bought lots of nice fresh food. It does make a difference when you cut down on carbs. I actually cooked myself a late breakfast sandwich today- toasted english muffin with sausage patty, scrambled egg and cheese. Forced myself to wash up the dishes. I just don't cook very often. The weather being cold and windy had a lot to do with it I think. Enjoy the rest of your evening! 😁
On the Campaign Trail Kamala Harris vowed , by the time she was finished her term , she would have Republican mothers begging her for food for their children, I thought well how can that not apply to Dems too.
Bean sprouts are so good for you , I’m going right off meat , unless it’s my favourite Chinese takeaway. We have to use up the eggs , so we will make cheesy scones , sultana scones to have with home made jam strawbs and cream.
I was doing keto ish for a long time but fell off the wagon a bit after Christmas. I have to say I've felt the difference and feel so much better since I ditched the carbs again
Ouch! And I thought the Algarve was bad enough. Fresh food isn't actually too bad here - which is why we eat so much of it - it's anything in a packet that costs!
I'm always surprised by how inexpensive food is over there! We would have paid 2-3 times that amount in US, Canada or Australia. Maybe it's because of the minimum wage difference?

I got prayer and have been told I am now making my own insulin , lost plenty of weight to do so .

Yes cook the potatoes from cold water too it helps. Also that’s best for roast potatoes.

Great shopping! A loaf of good bread in our area will run you $5,00 to $6.99 a loaf.
Here in America, that haul would have been at least $100! Good score.
