- Douglas Fryers Workshop demo "Suggesting Reality" reinforces an understanding of composition and form. It explores methods to break up and strip down the subject, then reconstruct it in new and surprising ways. It explores systems of dividing the space within the rectangle, distributing the lines and forms of the subject. It shows how the artist may represent nature in order to reflect on their perceptions, experiences and values while also contemplating the important power of content, symbol and abstraction.
Douglas Fryer was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was raised in Illinois and California. In 1988 he received his BFA in Illustration from Brigham Young University, Provo, UT. He later returned to BYU for further study toward and MFA in Painting and Drawing, and received his MFA in 1995. Fryer has taught fine art and illustration at several universities and art schools, including Brigham Young University; the University of Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut; the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, New York; and Snow College, Ephraim, Utah. He currently lives and works in the small community of Spring City, located in beautiful Sanpete Valley in central Utah.

Thank you Mr. Fryer to sharing your amazing artwork. I learned a lot special using the big putty knife and creating an effective marks and textures.
Loved watching. Fascinating painting. I want to try laying in paint with a pallet knife like yours. To correct that , it’s called a putty knife. Perhaps my Husband will let me borrow his. Thank you Enjoyed watching PS. I thought of Monet’s water lily paintings.
I love the painting and the process. I would like to know you get such an interesting and abstract image to work from as a reference.
Your work is wonderful. I look at your paintings at work, and I feel better. Inspiring. I love that you have paint on your hands- I see lots of video where painters wear gloves, which bugs me.
Awesome workshop!! too bad it didn´t get more publicity on line... hoping for more from Mr. Fryer soon!!!
