Day 53, Part 1 - 16 June 2023
SJ is still not feeling 100% so we decided to take a taxi up to Big Buddha and decide if we want to trek it down by foot. A hotel receptionist advises us to use the ‘iNDrive’ app instead of ‘Grab’ as it offer cheaper fares. She books us a taxi but half way up to the Big Buddha mountain the driver tries to spits us out or makes us pay him more. We got scammed.
We check out the amazing views from the top and pay respects to the BB. We then decide to go back down by foot and look for the start of the trail.

150 is like 4 usd. At 800 thb is $22 usd and he’s willing to wait for you and take you around a few hours is a steal and not a scam. Idk where im from in nyc a 10 min ride already cost me $12.
Oh no.. you misunderstood what the scam was. It wasn’t that….it was that the taxi driver knew at the beginning of the journey that the final destination was the Big Buddha but when we got half way…he told us that the app stated the destination was on this very quiet road. We weren’t going to complain or make fuss with him as we were in the middle of nowhere and we were made to pay him more to get us to the Big Buddha.
We did have a funny feeling in the beginning of the journey because when he confirmed the Big Buddha.. he didn’t sound like he waited to take us there.
Then he decided to up sell by offering to wait and drive us around but we weren’t going to continue to use his service especially as he just scammed us.
Certainly sometimes it seems things are sent to test us. I often use the third person approach which means if this was replayed how would I like to be portrayed in that moment.
Unfortunately bigger tests are then sent to try to catch us out.

Use to go there often on my 125cc. No big cats but there used to be some dogs. I always think of the scams as part of the 'Tourist Surcharge', something I've just come to expect as part of the overall travel experience in many of these sorts of places. Shame you didn't get to visit Soi-Taied (Tiger Street). That's not far from the Big Bhudda and a little world in itself. Would've been right up your street Tim with all the MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai gyms.

Ah the Taxi's can be a real nightmare, they know all the tricks in the book and do it with a smile. They should all operate off the meter! If you ever go to Bali you might be unlucky enough to get a metered taxi where the meter changes numbers like a stopwatch!!!!

@@TravelDiaryWithSJandTim ahhh.... so the trusted cabs in Bali are BlueBird Taxis they usually always go on the meter... The bad experiences I have had are in the BlueBiro which from a far the 'o' looks like a 'd' but don't be fooled. We got scammed once we had travelled a few hundred meters and it was already more than the cost of the taxi from the airport to the villa. The meter was like something out of Back to the future! 🤣
