This week I'm testing out my new lens, a Sony 50mm f2.5 I bought having decided to cancel my order of the 50mm f1.2. I talk about why, and then spend an hour or so photographing Newborough beach on Anglesey in North Wales.

Hey James! Thanks for your videos that you do!!! I just thought that as a friend, (since you mentioned “sleepless nights” in your last video) I’d recommend a book to you that I know has helped a lot of my friends (and my mom when I was a kid:-). Really useful information! The book is “On Becoming Baby Wise - Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nightime Sleep”. I understand that you don’t have all the time in the world but I thought I just tell you as a fellow photographer. Congrats to entering a new world of parenting. Hope it helps!😀

For me, Sony A7CR and Sony 50mm f/2.5 Extreme quality. Very compact and light!
Yeah, that's a dream travel combo. Maybe the 40, so you can get a bit wider and with 61mpx you can always crop with no penalty

Don’t worry about gear. I’ve used and continue to use anything that works. Sharp images require a good lens, a steady hand (or tripod) and a body (camera) that works. Leica, Sony, Fuji, Hasselblad or Linhoff. It gives one opportunity to capture the vision in mind. In days gone by you weren’t a photographer unless you lugged an 8X10 view everywhere using all those swings and tilts to manipulate life. You do good work!

Gear changing happens when your needs aren’t getting met. I was a hard core Nikon shooter and extremely happy with my D500. As of last year, I ended up switching to Fujifilm and absolutely love my X-T4. It suits my needs more than I realized.
No, gear change happens when you run out of things to praise Panasonic about on a youtube Chanel, and switch to Sony. Give it a few years, and he’ll switch to canon.
💯 % agree I had my reason why I went from my years of Nikon to and old Panasonic . But also changing gear can also give excitement back to get to know a new system
@@phildoodler2199 at the end of the day, does it matter what he shoots with? He can completely switch back to Micro 4/3, or even start shooting with film for that matter and I wouldn’t judge him. It’s all about getting the shot. If Sony helps him achieve that shot, then it is what it is. That and his content is good.

Heh, that video you made 4 years ago about ditching full frame was one of the pivotal ones for me when I switched from Canon FF to Fujifilm X series. I still have no regrets, at least in part because I don't do professional work that would require more resolution. Having said that... one day I might make the plunge to medium format Fujifilm. That G series is really nice. Really heavy, since I'm only 5'2", but reeeaaally nice.
I'm sticking to Sony apsc for quite same reason while having an eye over ff. But in your case I think you can also consider a body like A7c or even any other A7 with combination of this new mighty compact G series primes or even the 28-60 which is really sharp enough for landscape or street photography while is light enough which I bought one for my crop camera! Fuji bodies are great but lenes doesn't help to keep the weight down at all. Lenses available in Sony ecosystem are so tempting. That's why I'm waiting to see if Sony brings a fuji equivalent camera in apsc next year or not.
Me too, I went to Fuji, and the only thing that I kind of regret from full-frame is the low light capability... Other than that I'm living the dream and am not even tempted by the GFXs. I just would love to get more X series cameras (but lenses first!)
That video is still relevant, and even in today's video James mentioned some missed foto opportunities because of the system change, like avoiding shooting in continuous mode due to the files being too big, or missing the wide angle shot for not carrying that bulky wide angle lens with him. Also James has chosen a location where he knew in advance he can have a good use for that 50mm focal length. For the average photographer the situation is even worse at a point that camera just stays in the closet being too inconvenient to carry around. The paradox is that people are getting these bigger systems in order to allow them to do big prints just in case they might want to sometimes...and they end up taking no photos and nothing to print as result.
07:49 is a beautifully composed shot - I appreciate the effot for just a little talky bit.
James, I will miss your MFT based content because it kinda sold the "gear does not matter" thing by being the only one not shooting G Master this, Canon RF 1.2 that or Fuji medium format so many people do non-stop at the moment. But I have watched close to every video you ever did and you truly are about photography, not just gear. In the end, your gear has to make your work possible, and the easier it is, the more content we get. So keep it up. But you get extra points whenever you choose something not G Master or third-party. I loved the Sigma lens on your Panasonic S5 just for it not being what Panasonic would like you to use.
Go support channels that still shoot m4/3 like Robin Wong or Emily of Micro Four Nerds.

The one at 4:50ish got me thinking a bit... I've expected that you'd go for the sea as the main attraction as it quite often is when one goes to the beach, and then people tend to use everything else as merely framing to make the sea pop out more in the final image. The same happens when you go and photograph a waterfall or anything of the sorts. But sometimes (not too often) there might be something just next to it which could make a great photo as well, but we are too blinded by the main event to see it. Don't think its too revolutionary but still thought it was worth sharing.

Love the low contrast look of the photos!
I don't know if it was the lighting at the time these shots were taken or a conscious decision in post but a number of these images have an almost bleached, washed out appearance. It took a few pics before the look started to grow on me. Great tour around the beach. Wales is gorgeous!
Thanks mate! I like a washed out look at the coast :) The problem is when those images are paired with horrible HDR looking gopro footage it makes them look a little bright :)
Use whatever works for you James. It’s the subject, not the gear that matters.

Yes it's a shame because us M4/3 users don't have many champions of the system, but if your tools are holding you back and there is something better out there. Then change your tools, don't be held back through loyalty/ fanboyism.
Hi James - catching up with the ol UA-cams. Have a backlog to go through.
I notice a few episodes back you mention having a little one on board now. One thing you might like to think about is keeping a Word document (though other word processors are of course available) of all the cute, wacky and nutsy squirrel things your young one says from when the age where at least semi-coherent speech begins.
I kept documents for both my sons from earliest days through to about 10ish or so years old. Some sweet stuff, some crazy and some just hilarious to my wife and I.
I gave them both their lists (they are now in their 20s) and they were pretty chuffed after the obligatory groanings :) They actually compared notes in what I think was an unstated contest to determine who best embraced the qualities of cute and adorable, and who demonstrated the earliest signs of being a most profound and deeply philosophical thinker. Anyhow, that's my tip. I really enjoy your presentations and all the best to you and your family in these difficult times.

Great to see you still shooting handheld as im a fellow tripod hater and that's why i love watching your video's. although it has to be said it must be much harder to shoot handheld with 60mp , i was the same when i went to the D850 then to my beloved Z7 with 46mp to make sure my images are tack sharp.

As I follow you because you are a photographer (great content) the occasional review of gear is useful and carries a good deal of credibility. Gear is not cheap and an insight into other’s thinking on camera and particularly lens choices is valuable. 👍

I love 50mm, but it's hard to use just one lens for everything.

I just bought the 50 2.5 for my RIII and RIV and it's all James' fault for planting it in my mind with this video. Can't wait to test it out tomorrow with the fall leaves.
The lighthouse shot actually captured a nice wave wash up. The cloud above was cool too. 😎

I bought the Sony 50mm 2.5 for my wife to use in studio because of the super fast AF (never shoot wider than 2.8 with full flash setup anyway). She shoots infants and toddlers and AF speed has been a challenge with toddlers. We have loved the lens so much that it has now become one of our most used lenses. I often steal it to take with me because it's size, handling and IQ are just fantastic. I often pair it with my Tamron 20mm 2.8 for wide angle and my Tamron 28-200 2.8-5.6 because it breaks the laws of physics.
C'est la Vie James! No worries...it isn't about gear but just you showing us the real stuff!
I haven't found a Sony shooter whose videos I like. Love the fact you have turned to the dark side. Be excited about the new gear.

Personally I feel sad because MFT system is an excellent system way underated, and you leaving the system will just put it into the shadows even more.
In all fairness, I believe that our man James had been using full frame LUMIX for some time.
@@colinspotswood9893 yes, when Panasonic announced their FF camera I felt sad for MFT system too. Competing on FF segment against players such as Canon, Nikon and Sony seemed too ambitious and too expensive, it was a sign that some of that effort would be taken from MFT division thus slowing it down.
I don't think you need to worry about the MFT system being put into the shadows. For one, awesome as James is, he's not carrying the weight of MFT on his shoulders alone - many photographers out there use it. Personally I work with Olympus and they have been very active lately doing A Lot for the community and being seen more. I'm an outdoor lifestyle photographer and for me and so many others the importance of small, light weight gear is really big and so I am not worried about MFT loosing ground :)
Don't blame a person for choosing another format. It is just plain wrong. Panasonic MFT has chosen their own fate with the horrendous AF system they still cling too... And yes, I have used Lumix GH5/G9 for several years, before I just could not cope with the AF system any more...
It won't do anything to the m43 brand, James still has his set up and has said on numerous videos he'll take the correct camera out for the job.
The m43 system is underrated by a lot of people yes - but that's simply because a lot of people haven't used it, and just assume that image quality is worse. I'm an Olympus user and I get sharp clean images at 20mp of resolution, so I have the option of making decent sized prints; but you have to use the decent lenses to get the decent results.
If you're getting comissioned work to make massive prints, then you're going to pick a system which allows that.
Whatever system you use, you'll get professional level results as long as you know what it is you are trying to achieve against what the camera can do.
Confused why you can't justify a 50mm 1.2 but could if it was a 24mm. Depth of field becomes less of a factor the wider you go. Especially with the benefits of mirror less and image stabilisation. Apols if I got it wrong
You basically answered your question. Usually landscape photographers need more depth of field, the preferred way to isolate subjects in landscape is not blur but elements like mist, color tones, light and shadows.
@@p.io7 so 1.2 would be pointless because the sweet spot of the lens is usually between f7 and f11. Landscape its all about wider focal length, using a tripod and bracketing shots. f1.2 would be no use on a 50mm even less so on a 24mm.
@@antcox2006 you are basically right if you narrow it down to landscape photography, but 24mm is a better focal length for shooting the environmental portraits Wich I assume will be used by James primary to film himself within the environment. Thus having a faster aperture will help him achieve better separation when he needs it.
@@antcox2006 You’re right about the aperture, but don’t get snookered into the wide angle trap. Plenty of great landscape shots to be had at normal and tele lengths. Picking out, isolating, and emphasizing an item in the landscape can also be very powerful. You don’t always have to suck the entirety of the world into the frame. James demonstrates that routinely (as do others) to great effect.
That shot of the lighthouse is top freaking notch.
I’ve really been enjoying this lens - great detail and nice rendering whether on the a7iii, a7riii, or a7riv.

Looks like a good lens. When shooting with a full frame, I think 50mm is a pretty decent angle for landscape photos. Sometimes when out, I like to just throw my nifty fifty on my camera and just leave the rest of the gear in the car. Since I like my photos to be razer sharp from bottom to top, I rarely ever shoot lower than F8, so for landscape photography getting a really fast 50 does seem like an unnecessary expense.
Man do yourself a big favour and buy the 28-60mm kit lens! It's damn good sharp and is as light as this 50mm 2.5! Having a light and sharp zoom for landscape is a life saver. You only will miss the 24mm on it which you already have on your 16-35

Just follow your path. The ones who felt bad about the gear you are using now, was never about photography, but only about gear. I don´t like to shoot with Sony, and I tried a few times, but at the end doesn´t really matter the gear, but the end result and the passion about photography.
I really love the 20mm 1.8 :) used it for roughly a year and it's great! Sharp, light & fast

Loving the quality you're getting with the Sony kit, and the 50mm in particular, which all confirms what I felt when shopping for my current camera - that the Sony was probably the best, but I couldn't quite run to it, and so compromised with the G9. But not really disappointed, for reasons that you will be familiar with.

I'd imagine anyone upset by the move is someone who bought Lumix gear based on your videos. They probably feel a deeper connection to the channel than most, which is understandable. I don't shoot either Lumix or Sony so for me I'm interested in how you get on in Sony and if there's a big benefit for your style of shooting. I like the rationale behind opting for the 50mm prime. Might adopt that myself.

One of my favorite lens is my 20mm1.8 for low light and street photography. I was recently in the California Red Woods the trees are 200 feet high I used my 14mm2.8 Rokinon lens to photograph the trees it worked well even if it is manual focus lens
The head is round so that your thoughts can change direction. (Some wise guy in the past, probably)

I *thought* you were talking about the 50 1.2 last week - what else is "slightly exotic", on back order, and fits in between a 16-35 and 70-200? Glad you got the 2.5 instead, fits with your light kit philosophy.
Don't worry about the gear talk, I don't watch you/Nigel/Mats because you are MFT/Nikon/Sony but because you're great and interesting photogs :). Keep doing you - including the yakking ;).
PS you didn't mention it but with the MP the A7RIV has you can always crop-zoom from (the 16-)35mm to 50mm and from the 50mm to 70mm. No need for a 24-70 at all.
“People’s opinions evolve … and the camera market evolves.” This is a great quote. Photo gear tribalism is no more productive than the political and social tribalism we see so much of today. Besides, you are being inclusive, not exclusive; I find my G9 a favorite, too … for what it is.
I recently purchased a Sony A7II and purchased the 24mm f2.8 version of the lens in your video, they also have a 40mm that I will look to get. Nice video James.
James, like your (partly) switch to Sony. I use the A73 and love it. But love your photo’s om the Lumix as well. It’s all about the fun of taking the photo’s and the result, Not the brand.

I love my 'Plastic Fantastic' 50mm F1.8 on my Canon 7Dii. Its a superb lens for £100 i think it was. The only downside is that it doesn't have IS in any form. I used it a lot for close up car shots for the DOF it produced. Sadly i'm going through a flat spot when it comes to photography., i just cannot be bothered to go out and take photos, or edit them for that matter. My Wife has really got into birding and wildlife photography, but of course i take a few shots, but not as intensely as maria does. I am hoping that the bug comes back to me and i am sure it will. Great channel as always James. Always love your content and presenting style.

Just thought that I'd say that I watch your videos because I find them entertaining and sometimes even informative (😁). As to which brand of gear you use, I could not care less. Keep up the great videos.
I have ventured into the world of photography quite recently and your content/videos have inspired me so much. I also have learned some crucial things about photography from you along the way. Now that you have started a fresh journey with the Sonys I am all here for it, to enjoy your beautiful work and also learn from it. Best of luck with everything that is new.
Supposed to be a great place for Astro photography. Oh and the 20mm great lens for it. Love to see that video 👍🏼
I used to shoot 50mm without exception, as that was the lens I had on my camera.
I did once have a 200mm lens many years ago but I used it maybe twice in the entirety of owning it.
I’ve also owned a 28mm lens which, just like the 200, was use on the odd occasion too but that all changed when I went Fujifilm X100v & XF10 which are/were 35 & 28mm respectively.
Then the GRIIIX came along and off went the XF10 as it was sold to buy the Ricoh which got me back nearer the 50mm I’d always shot as it’s a 40mm equivalent… it’s an expensive way to ‘learn’ focal lengths but I’ve learned (and enjoyed the challenges) of shooting 28mm.
Now, I can, if I wish go back to working at 50mm as I now have a Sony @7 III with the kit zoom lens as it goes from 28 to 70mm but that lens may end up just like my old 200mm and not get used much as I’m going to add the FE 40mm f2.5 (yes, another 40mm) as I’ve gotten used to that focal range with my X100v & GRIIIX.
I’ve hankered to get back to a full frame camera ever since I went digital, just after my Olympus OM-1n was sold off many many years ago to go digital and I have indeed had two full framed digital cameras since then but they were disposed of a long time ago… M9 & Nikon D600 (worst camera I’ve ever had).
I’ve just come back to your channel only recently and am enjoying the videos once again.

Great video. Love your photos and colors. I bought your LR Presets and will hopefully pick up your books soon. That's an awfully big backpack to be hauling around with such a tiny lens on your camera, doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose? LOL

Love the 50mm equivalent focal length. Had that length basically glued to my camera for quite some time.
Why do people feel married to certain brands and almost an unwillingness to accept that there are other options out there and as time progresses 1 of 2 things could happen. 1 is that your needs change OR 2 is that the products on the market change to suit your needs better.
PLEASE remember that if you have a camera from within the last couple years they are almost all excellent cameras that can produce phenomenal results and the small differences honestly don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things or how you would evoke emotion in a photo!
“Needs” change for everything…..I have my own personal experiences that have led me to make the decisions of buying my home in a specific size/area and now that I have a toddler our needs have changed and we may decide to buy a different house. There’s also a car that suits my needs for the area that I live in along with the reliability I want. Plié there’s the items that facilitate MY hobbies and what brings happiness to me!
As far as my camera choices go, I suffered a spinal injury almost 10 years ago now and upgraded to a Canon R6 because the autofocus made my life easier and it fit my budget.
What do you think about the megapixel count on that camera?
@@alfredconqueror4422 when I first bought it I didn’t think it would be “enough” megapixels and really wanted to get the R5 and honestly thought I would just have to bite the bullet and get the R5. Please keep in mind my use case might be different than yours and so far the R6 has been great for me. I’m not a professional and do a mix of photos and video of mostly family stuff and my in-law side of the family liked the photos enough to request me to take photos for them. So far most of my prints are 8x10 and I think I’ve done one 16x20 and I think they’ve turned out great.
I’m extremely happy with my choice even though just a couple days ago I had to send my R6 in to Canon for warranty work with an intermittent issue and I’ve had to pickup my older Canon T6S again for photos and video and holy crap what a difference and upgrade the R6 is in comparison to the T6S and I’ve been spoiled. I guess another question for you would be what camera are you switching from and is there enough of a difference to justify the cost? I’m happy to chat if you need more information on my experience with the camera 😃
I think with photography people are investing in a particular brand. A body + decent lenses is quite a large investment, so unless you are very rich, I think it is natural that people have an emotional attachment to the gear. Saying that, I agree with going what works best with you. I changed to Sony after many years of being a Nikon user. It was quite a jolt, but when I made the decison to change to mirrorless, Sony was right for my situation. Nikon's mirroless system is maturing just as well, and I am sure I would have been just as happy with it.
@@Banshun yes I definitely understand investing in a system and that’s why I didn’t switch to Sony a while ago because even though the cameras were similar in price by the time you add up the accessories it gets to be expensive….well expensive for me and I don’t even have a lot of gear.
It’s like going to shop for TV’s and you are comparing pictures side by side, when you get home you have no references or comparison so it just looks good.
There is something so satisfying about 50mm - Perhaps it's because we've seen it so often over the years but the photos always make me happy
There is something about pancake lenses. Small light and always able to be with you.
Sorry to say I agree with one other poster (possibly others but i haven't read all the comments) that the photos seem over exposed / bleached out to my eyes. There was more colour in, for example, the grasses on the video than in the stills. Was that a conscious choice on your part?

You’ve got me thinkin James. I’ve currently got the 16-35 2.8, and 24-70 2.8. The 24-70 was the first lens I got for the system, and I really love it… but that thang is heavy!! The majority of my photography is done when I’m backpacking or on a climbing trip. I’m in love with the 16-35, and it is going absolutely nowhere. But I’ve been toying around with selling off the 24-70 and using it to fund a 50 1.4 and 70-200 4. I’ll have to look into the 50 2.5.

Something I'm interested in, now that you are trying other systems / getting known with Sony: Did you have to adjust your editing workflow (bc of 60MP) or even make some tweaks to presets / profiles / how you use certain sliders?
Asking this, because with my Sony I found f.e. greens to be often mapped more to the yellow slider in LR than green, but with other brands it felt more accurate and where it belongs. That caused some of my presets to behave different enough to be noticable. So with everyone still talking about "Sony color", have you noticed and big differences specifically with color? (Completely ignoring the whole "color science" discussion and just talking personal experience / feel here. The question ist not about tech, but general impressions so far ;))
I have been using a 50mm 1.8 for the past few weeks on my 5d classic to try challenge myself with composition. Have to say I'm loving it. Great video James 👍

Uhhh man, beautiful location. I’m so jealous. Nothing quite like it here in New York. I live by a beach, but we don’t have those rock formations over here. Makes me want to get a plane ticket.
That’s a great choice. I’ve been drooling over the 50 1.2 but considering the 40 2.5 as a more pragmatic alternative.
Ended up buying the Voigtlander 40 1.2 SE last week, which is smaller and much cheaper than Sony’s fast lens. So far I’m enjoying it… not particularly sharp wide open but produces very ‘arty’ images, but from f2 / 2.5 it’s sharp as you like - so not a bad compromise. Manual focus only though.
Why would one shoot f1.2 on 24mm or 35mm but not on 50mm? Honest Question, I don't understand.

You did get some beautiful images on this outing, I must say.
Two years ago I switched from my pair of G9's to a pair of a7iii's. Still love the G9 and I'm still missing many parts of it, but for the work I do it wasn't a well suited system at all. The fanboys got riled up but I'm pretty sure they're over it by now - I'll use whatever tool is best for the job 💁♂️

I hope you weren’t referring to my comment on your last video as I was only joking. All of the reasons you gave for switching gear made complete sense. Why lug two lots of camera lenses around when you don’t need to.
I like your explanation at the end of this video of getting the prime lenses rather than a 24-70. I’m on MFT and have the 12-60 kit lens and have wondered whether to one day get the 8-18, 12-35 or both and it would perhaps make more sense to just get the 8-18 as I have a 25mm prime and I could get a wider angle prime such as the 15mm Leica. Informative as always 👍

Sony bringing out the 50mm f1.2 and the f2.5 baffles me. The zeiss 55mm f1.8 is incredible
Good call on the 50mm. Unless you're shooting portraiture and need 1.2, that's a large chunk of coin to put down on it to be shooting it stopped down anyway. I'm definitely very interested in that little 2.5 as a walkaround lens. I have a Super-Takumar 50mm f/1.4 that I use a lot now, but autofocus (and not being irradiated every time I carry it) would be nice.

I think for a future video you should do a 10 shot challenge with Nigel Danson and Henry Turner. Nifty fifty only and must be monochrome images. It would be interesting to see all three of you come together and see your different techniques and results on the same location.
I never know when is the best time to use a polariser.

When it suits your photographic intent.
They cut out reflections, so you lose the surface sheen of water and darken the sky (by reducing the scattered light) to bring out the blue. See thru windows and water better, and colors are a bit more saturated. Actually can make water LESS dramatic. No benefit for the sky into the sun or directly backlit, maximum effect at 90 degrees.
You likely shoot digital, so experimenting is cheap. Shoot with and without and see the effect. Then choose. It is widely said that the first most universal and important filter to get is a polarizer, so just do it. Useful for both color and B&W, film and digital. Split ND for landscape is next, but that is another topic.
Not that a polarizer is ALWAYS required, it depends on what YOU want from the scene before you. With digital you can saturate selectively by color, something a polarizer cannot do. But editing cannot as effectively remove glare.

Love your videos and beauty is in the eye of the beholder but the frames of your video just before you shot looked better than the actual photos because they seemed over exposed. But if you like bright over exposed photos then you will have fans in that camp. The most important part is that you are getting out and having fun and keeping people entertained. Good work! Exposure is in the eye of the beholder sometimes also. ;)
