Real Aging or Fake? What is a "Dark Back" Anyways? 2009 Gibson 1957 Reissue Goldtop Review

- In 1956-1958 you can find some vintage #Gibson #LesPaul Gold Top #electric #guitars with what is known as a "Dark Back." Sometimes terminology can be hard to learn, but this one is fairly easy. A Dark back simply means that gold top has a dark brown/maroon finish on the back of the guitar instead of a clear to show off the mahogany wood. Dark Back Gold Tops are still transparent though so you can still see the wood grain underneath. From 1952-1957, the les paul was only offered in gold so they offered a Dark Back and All Gold (meaning the back is also gold) as a color variation until they introduced the Les Paul 'Burst'
This is a 2009 1957, Gibson Les Paul R7 '57 Reissue of a dark back. While it isn't 100% historically correct, it also isn't 100% of the price of an original!
Nickel parts have a very unique way of aging, but I am skeptical if the aging on the pickup covers is real or 'induced relicing' with a chemical. I will leave the answer up to the viewers to decide. I could see either way being true

That's one fine looking guitar. I've got a '56r Goldie with P90s & I've always had a hankering for a '57r Goldie with 'buckers, just for the tonal differences (& the fact that I'm a huge Mick Ronson fan). The problem for me is, here in the UK they command a lot of money but if a bargain one ever pops up I'll be interested.
Ok i know its alot to ask but you should put together a buying guide on vintage les pauls that has a year by year on what features and key things to look for to authenticate and check for modifications
Sounds like an eBook that needs to be written haha. I couldn't do it for the 50s models without lots of research, but mid 70s - 80s, I probably could

I've never really liked gold tops, but I'd rock this one. I like the dark back.
I'm not a big fan of dark backs but I love Goldtops,my 60 reissue is my #1.as for the aging mine is 22 years old and the hardware looks pretty similar.
I've got a 2001 R7 Dark Back and had it from new, unaged. The green corrosion is around the edges of the pickups, looks genuine age to me matey, judging by mine
The green stuff is called verdigris, it comes from an acidic reaction on copper, brass, and I'm guessing nickel as well. I used find it on World War 2 memorabilia with nickel parts when I was collecting. On guitar pickups it may come from sweat laying on the surfaces.

Seems odd that the same discoloration is absent from the bridge and tailpiece. Every one I've had seems to tarnish equally on all parts.

There was some build up on the bridge, but it cleaned off. That's why I thought the covers might have been 'enhanced' a bit. Despite trying to clean them, they wouldn't.
Probably due to the pickups not being wiped off with the hands, whereas with the bridge palm muting would wipe away any sweat that had been sitting to replace it with fresh sweat and wiping away corrosion before it had a chance to permeate. It could also be possible that the Pickup covers were swapped from a previous LP that the prior owner had that was damaged to the point of needing replacement.
Now that is a gold top what a pretty LP classic.

I had some Seymour Duncan Antiquity humbuckers which had that kind of greenish finish, and it got way worse within the 6-12 months I kept the guitar. I was able to wipe the residue off like that by the time I got rid of it.
i've been a haters because of bad playing with high end guitars but actually it's a really good channel to learn about history about collectible guitars

I think the aging on the pickups are "fake", or factory made. I bought a 57 Reissue from 2008 that have been unplayed for 10 years and remains all that time in it's case and have exactly the same aging on the pickups and tailpiece as this one.

I prefer a dark back to the red stain or light brown back. Don't like black back at all, I like some wood grain to show through.
I also have a 2009 r7 dark back with a very fat neck. The finish on the pickup covers is also VOS and looks also worn. They are made this way. Also the back covers are in brown like yours.

Me too. My R8 has a 0.94 neck and it is sooooo badass. I get thumb muscle fatigue with a shredder skinny neck. Hate 'em.
@@quigglesb9381 LOL... approximately. The only other neck that fat in my stable is my Fender EOB Strat. Wonderful neck. My new PRS Zack Myer 'pseudo LP' has a medium chunky neck, maybe close to 0.90. Great axe for only approx $650.

I'd love to buy from you....My question is about the Gibson logo on these '57 reissues. Aren't they supposed to NOT have the dot above the 'i' in Gibson on the headstock? I'm understanding that the dot wasn't added until after '69...Thanks, Trog!...
I owned a Goldtop back in mid 70's, No idea what year it was made. But it did have mini humbuckers, so it musta been 70's made. It didnt have the chunck of wood at the back of neck at headstock, I forget its name,,volute(?),something like that. Paid $350 at a pawn shop in 1976,,,really expensive for 1970,s!!!

I'm a little confused about pickups on the R7 I thought they were custom shop humbuckers close to the spec of a 57 classic pickup I do think that the tall plastic pickup rings mellow out the sound a little If they are burstbucker 1&2 pickups I hated the sound on the 50's standard les paul but love the sound on an R7 what's the difference?

I'm not much into the gold top's, I would like to own one someday but it's the color that I really don't much like. The only reason they used gold was because it showed up better on the black and white television shows of the day. I don't really care for anything gold in color, Gold metallic is kind of cool though lol.
I'm like you Austin, I prefer the dark transparent backs, they just seem to look I guess a little classier? One thing about a Les Paul is that it cannot look cheap, if you find one that does, well... you feel kind of ripped off. I mean, put the cheap paint job on actual cheap guitars, but when you are dealing with a $2,000+ guitar, you better not go cheap on it! I guess that is why I much prefer the face of a Les Paul to have transparent paint/stain where the wood is easily visible underneath and not just some solid red or blue paint. Black and white are about the only "acceptable" solid colors for me unless it is has sparkles or some other affect in the paint.
How thick is the neck? I want to compare to my '92 Studio, but can't find reference anywhere.

You learn a lot about these guitars when you get to actually experience them first hand. A good amount of info can be read up on online - but when you REALLY learn is when you see and experience it all first hand.

wow is there any taper at all in that neck?
I think that's natural aging, it could be oxidation from being played. I'm not an expert but that's what I think.

You could always do what Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band did to his original 57 Goldtop.......sand it down and refinish it in red.

What a horrible mistake and lapse of judgement that was! That was the goldtop he used all through the original Allman Brothers days with Duane Allman, including the Fillmore album! I think he gave that guitar to Dan Toler.
I would guess Simple Green was used to dull the finish on the pickups.
I have one I know nothing about nothing wrong with it I don’t know the year but it has a dark red back

This is factory aging. It was a series called VOS that Gibson was doing in the late 2000’s starting in 2006 I believe with there historic custom shop guitars.
I like big necks and I can not lie, all you other brothers can't deny, when an axe comes in with an Itty bitty waist and a round thing in your face you get sprung!

I had a 57 dark back that was under a guys bed in Chicago. Mine was in perfect condition as well as the case and beginner book. These don't have a maple top.

That is a good question as those two are about in the same price range. I like customs for their look - but personally, I've always liked the feel of a 'standard' better. It all falls down to personal preference to specs though.

A dark back is the opposite of a butterface.
Dark back is usually an indication that the guitar does not have a maple cap. These all mahogany '57 and '58 Les Pauls are less desirable than the maple capped ones, which are basically the same as a '58 burst except for the finish. The lack of a maple cap makes the guitar sound less bright.
