Lol ok so the price dosen't look too high. It is a prototype so thats gotta have some $$$$ value for it. If you didn't plan on keeping it what would be a realistic price?
I get why people like 1-pickup guitars, but personally I like neck pickups for leads and cleans on both LP and Strat and would never ditch those for any benefits. But Gibson should definitely make those heel joints their standard feature.
The lure of single-pickup instruments is a psychological one: With fewer options on the controls, you mentally force yourself maximize the level of versatility from your picking technique. Plus, you come up with an optimal amplifier setting, then make slight adjustments with just the volume and tone knobs. I’ve had an idea for a custom-built guitar, with a different spin on the single-pickup philosophy: Just a Strat’s bridge and middle pickups, permanently wired into Position 2, with a volume and tone knob.
I love this guitar, just wish this model was more readily available. Thank you very much for sharing this treasure with us. This is the stuff that dreams are made of.
I was grateful to realize this when I bought a 2004 Melody Maker from you earlier this year. Just one p90, a bunch of mahogany, and a slab of rosewood. But man, it's been my go-to ever since. My other guitars worth 3-5 times as much sit and watch.
I love the no-neck for the clearance and less distraction. I love the vol knob being OUT OF THE FREAKING WAY of the picking/strumming motion (unlike strats) but..... how is that going to intonate properly? I mean... I don't see a way to adjust the length of each string individually. If that's true, that is a total deal-breaker for me.
Reminds me of the 2016 Gibson Les Paul CM. The differences are a maple 59 neck shape, satin black finish, humbucker instead of P90, and a tune-o-matic tailpiece. Stripped down, no-nonsense, rock and roll machine. Great video. Also nice to see you work with Mr. Baker. Thanks for a great show!
Awesome guitar Austin, good to see Mr. Baker too. Falls in love with the guitar, and then lists it for sale............a true Business Man. I'm not surprised many prefer a single pickup guitar. A guitar pickup does imparts a significant magnetic field around the strings, I can see how lessening that effect (cutting it in half) would possibly change how the strings react when strummed/played. Great guitar Austin, enjoy it while you can as I suspect you're not the only person who loves this type of guitar.
I am genuinely kind of livid. I want it. I just recently got my first goldtop P-90 LP and I am in love with it. This, though. I checked the reverb listing only a few minutes into the video and the rest of the video just made me sad. Not because it's bad. But because I want your happiness and this gorgeous instrument. Pretty sure this is my favorite thing that's ever been on the channel. It's subjective and I don't expect people to agree but god damn.
Austin, you just keep getting better! This is the best, intriguing, informative vid yet. I haven't seen all your vids but this one is very special. I wouldn't sell her, either, but it looks like you couldn't pass up a buyer!...She's gone! (Hall & Oats style!).
I do love that gold top. I've always want one also. Just an FYI, Ronnie Montrose wasn't a Stone Temple Pilots guy. He played with Van Morrison, Edgar Winter and Montrose. Sammy Hagar's debut band. Rock Candy Baby!!
Brian Baker from Bad Religion has a goldtop just like this one. 54 specs with a 59 neck. Super light mahogany body used on the whole guitar. Super cool instrument! My wallet luckily allowed me to buy one of the new goldtops from the original collection, but my dream is to get one just like this. Greetings from Costa Rica guys!
i own a classic with p90s and i was messing around with it and started playing the Teen Titans intro and now i get why it sounded so similar, he recorded it with p90s! THANKS FOR THE FACT!!!
Figuring out that Allan Holdsworth went bridge pickup only really changed my perspective on what can be achieved with the timbre of the guitar, and how much technique factors in. He also processed the hell out of his signal but his clean tone is/was beautiful. Single pickup guitars are very inspiring to play because you cant just flip the selector switch to get different sounds
So true about single pickup guitars, except for a Fender Esquire guitar. Check one of them out, the Esquire still retains it's 3-Position Pickup Selector Switch for 3 different tones/sounds.
Phil X has a signature Framus guitar that is one pickup. He's an advocate for that, citing the magnetic pull of a second (neck) pickup affecting string movement.
I kind of agree with the whole single pickup idea. Not only the magnetic field but removing the extra rhythm pickup control circuitry would also effect the signal/tone. Even when the rhythm pickup isn't selected/switched-on the control pots/capacitor still influence the overall circuitry and how it reacts to the bridge pickup's output. If I can remove a single neck pickup and sound more like Phil-X that wouldn't be a bad thing at all!
@@neilpatrickhairless LOL, so very true I would imagine you could easily out-pull those AlNiCo Magnets! I used to feel the same way you did about neck pickups and how important it is to have at the very least a pair of pickups. this one has to be one of my favorite episodes. what an epic guitar. Keep it!!! Id like to see what your current "Keep Pile" looks like. this guitar may need another video as well.
In my books, this is probably the prettiest axe that's ever been reviewed on this channel. How fucking pretty is that?!!! Like, just everything about it. Then to top it all off, Robert mafuckin' Baker havin'a go @ it. Baker's the next best thing to Slash himself. That was a wicked surprise 🤘 This video just made my day. Tanx heaps!!! 🙏 God bless you man!
I love that pick guard! I recently picked up a gold glory and I wonder if I could get that pickgaurd somewhere? The Jared James Nichols gold glory is awesome. This appears to be on another level though!

Had to change electronics in that to Emerson prewire with bumble bee cap. Trogly is right there is something special about a one pickup guitar with good tone control. Great episode Trogly hope gibson is watching!
I love single pickup guitars, especially those made by Gibson. I would love a cardinal red Firebird I. However, I much prefer that single pickup to be in the neck position. This Les Paul would be a dream guitar for me in that configuration. You don't typically see that outside of jazz applications though, which isn't near my playing style. I don't really like big jazz boxes, I much prefer solid bodies. My main is a 2006 SG Standard that's been heavily modified with only the neck humbucker wired directly to the output, no volume or tone pots. Never had much use for knobs or switches on electrics, I like to approach the electric more like an acoustic in the sense that you don't have any control over the sound beyond your playing dynamics. I love my single pickup Slick guitar, and honestly part of the appeal for me is the simplicity and a sort of peace of mind - no decisions to make, just play
I love single pickup geetars too! This one is a little gem! I starting out years ago playing on my grandmothers SG japan made Aria copy with one p-90 pickup. I loved that guitar! It always stayed in tune and resonated very well. Sounded great even played dry. I even owned a schecter cory smoot one single pickup beast!! Wish i still had it that thing played awesome! But something about a goldtop that i really like! I like when they get that green age to them and even the vintage knobs do it sometimes. You could even swap that p-90 out for a mini bucker if you wanted to..? Thanks for sharing man! Rock on!!
That's a very cool guitar. I'd hold onto it too. It appears that it was an aged KS signature that was a B-Stock... basically they started to age it, noticed the paint run and stopped. The reason the "KS" would show up like that is that they scraped the decal off and resprayed that area of the neck/ headstock (you can see the difference in color). Regardless it's beautiful and as I said I'd hold onto it too lol.
Does anyone else think the top carve is sloppy on the upper waist and bout? Looks like there's a too deep valley at the waist and a kind of double hump on the bout. Also, is that the maple top showing below the binding in the cutaway at about 12:48? I do like the blondish fingerboard, and the neck/body joint carve.
There is a decent story on the guitar if you look for it. The STP was in fact a random sticker that was stuck on the guitar when it was bought when Montrose bought it. Hence the STP burst name. Dean De Leo does not own it, nor does it have anything to do with stone temple pilots.
Hey Austin, have you ever compared the differences in sustain from one model to another? I have told this before but I believe the single pickup models have more sustain and I believe this is because of the extra wood between the neck and bridge pup. You should try it with this guitar and compare it with a few others, just kick on the dirt and measure the times, it would be interesting to see if you come to the same conclusion. Great to see Robert Baker on your channel, dang son you starting to become a star on You Tube, I have heard your channel mentioned on several channels here recently!! It's kind of cool to see a guy like Robert who has admitted he was never into Les Paul's now getting into them!
Isn't that an old wives tale? Like that back in the 70s-90s people thought the more wood, the more sustain. But nowadays people _remove_ wood to increase sustain, with chambering. Or just play a semi-hollowbody or hollowbody guitar for more sustain.
I’ve always thought a single P90 pickup Les Paul with the pickup like a 330T or 225T in the middle position would be great. Set your amp a little bright and use the tone and you could get the sound of a neck or bridge pickup without the magnetic pull of a second pickup.
Great vid as always! Just a little tip..... Buy an endoscope to attach to your phone! Lets you look in all the tiny places and are ridiculously cheap! Hands down one of the coolest and nicest Les Pauls I've played
Wait a minute
So Robert, are we going to see a review on your channel of your new Les Paul purchase? Lol ,cool to see you on here!
Why is that?
Robert!!!
But it's pretty much just a regular old Junior
You should show the guitars that you kept, we always see the guitars you buy and sell, but it would be cool to see what you play outside the channel
Literally when a saw a bit of the hair of Robert I instantly recognized him, my favourite youtuber ever, glad you are working with him!
Same
Wow....that guitar is truly amazing. One of the best ones yet Trogly.
I literally yelled "Holy shit!!!" When the letters showed up with the black light. Great video!
Signature model or not, I would love to see Gibson make this a normal production model.
Make in purple or pink. I would buy it.
YES AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T WEIGH AS MUCH AS A BOAT ANCHOR.
I get why people like 1-pickup guitars, but personally I like neck pickups for leads and cleans on both LP and Strat and would never ditch those for any benefits. But Gibson should definitely make those heel joints their standard feature.
Could always have a guitar with just a neck pickup, those used to be the standard (e.g. ES-150).
Been eager for this video since the unboxing

Luthiers make it work on acoustics. If you have a properly angled and compensated saddle, your intonation will be fine
Now this is a guitar Gibson should make! Love it!
When you first unboxed it I thought: Robert Baker would love this guitar.
Jason Hetzler, it would complement his golden mane.

SO glad you jumped right on this one. Such a beautiful guitar. One of my dream guitars in fact. Single p90 Gold Top, mmmmm yes. HAHA

Wtf, never wanted a les paul until now. My god what a beauty.
I once saw a video of Billy Gibbons with a single pickup gold top.

spooky coincidences
I think I would miss the roundness of a neck pickup - I use the neck more on my SG than the bridge pup

Neck pickup is definitely best
