- Four takes with Mariah Bell. Which one is your favorite?
Backstory: In early May 2019, I joined Dani Montalbano, Mick Brezina and Mariah at Lakewood ICE to document their 2018-2019 programs while wearing Plus Five Apparel. It was my first time ever filming with Mariah, and in celebration of her amazing performance at U.S. Nationals last weekend, I’ve decided to share all four clips we took of her 2019 Long Program. The fourth video is the one I ended up posting, but it’s fun to go back and see the ‘warm-up’ process it took to get there.
I think my favorite part about the way I filmed this is that I didn’t ask Mariah to walk me through her steps before she started skating it. I just start filming and eventually gain an understanding of who a skater is through a lens. Videos 1, 3 and 4 really are the first time I’d watched her skate those sections. I think I capture emotion best that way, because it allows me to react to the skaters’ movements in real-time (like a live audience) and not bring in my own assumptions based on something I saw recorded on different day in entirely different circumstances. Good skating looks best from all angles anyways, so it’s more about the way I take an audience, especially a first-time skating audience, through that experience.

Such camera work in official competitions should be applied. It will be a revolution in television broadcasting competitions.
I feel like they could do 2 cuts of showing figure skating. One being done for the judges and then another day probably before competing to get the routine shot on the ice.
Having such camera-work done at official competitions is practically impossible. You need to have a camera-person on the ice, which is quite a distraction to the skater. Moreover, if the camera-person doesn't know where the skater is going at all times, it not only results in bad filming but is also dangerous.
Having said that, I do think they could do this more in gala exhibitions, as long as the camera-person really knows the program.

It could be interesting, but the cameraman on ice would have to train with the skater to know the program. Also some skaters would not be willing to have such a distraction so close.
But with a drone.
There are two types of skaters. Skaters that skate and skaters that not only skate but dance. Mariah is the second type. I just find her skating so...breathtaking
Yes, I completely agree. Joy just radiates from her. Victor Plushenko (SP?) is also incredible. He is so passionate. I think he has a background in ballet. Look him up. I think you will also enjoy him.

Not only does she dance on ice, but she floats. She is weightless. She radiates joy, exudes enjoyment, and is passionately lost in the music. Wow.... She is bringing artistry and grace back to figure skating!!!
I saw her at Skate Canada last year, and during the practices, the other skaters looked serious, and in some cases, quite intense, while in contrast, Mariah was skating around in what seemed to be a mild state of euphoria with the same beatific smile that she wears when she competes. She was in her own little happy world, and she really stood out to me for it.

There is something about practice video that shows us that it's not just the choreography, but HOW the skater interprets it. This is like a window into the soul. Beautiful work Jordan and Mariah!
I totally loved the way this was filmed, it was honest and real not merely edited to look perfect and really showcases mariah's perfectionism with herself. It just felt like we were floating on the ice with her ❤️❤️❤️❤️

She is stunning. Love her style so much! Takes my breath away. I wish this kind of skating were more rewarded rather than jump-jump-jumpety-jump. This shows more sophisticated skating skills as well as mature artistry.
IKR like they should judge it more like how they judge dance
It's only about the quads and triple axels these days. I mean, they are amazing, but there is so much more to figure skating than just jumps.

I could watch Mariah Bell and Alena Kostornaia all day. They have something instinctually emotional in their skating. They feel it, they don't just "do it".

The music she chose for this piece is the most beautiful that I have ever heard in skating. I get really emotional watching her do these programs.
Mariah was at a small venue skating rink in Skokie, Il. The show had kids from about 6 years and up! I saw her perform there twice for NINE DOLLARS!! She looked so happy to do it! She REALLY put it all together in her last couple of years! ❤❣

Lovely! Not on the person who filmed is an excellent skater but knew the routine and cares a lot. Mariah had to trust the person and not get distracted. He/she captured the magnificence, the grace, power and elegance of the skater and the utter lyricism of the practice....simply fantastic.

Mariah Bell is a skater I personally look up to she skates but has emotion she is not only skating but she is skating with emotion and passion which is one of the reasons I look up to her.
