As someone who got the Z Fold 2, I'm so bored with it tbh. It's still very useful to have a big screen and whatnot, but I'm so done with apps looking weird on both screens. My next phone will be a regular slab most likely

The used phone market is a possibility if you don't mind last year's hardware. Used prices on these super top end phones tend to fall fast. The first z flip is now only $400 and the razr is like $350
I'm beating the crap out of my Z flip. One of the rubber corner on the inside fell off when I ripped my phone off a tripod holder. Now it's running the finish off the top since there's no rubber there anymore. Still loving this phone!

Huawei made sure that Google services can be side loaded onto the X2 so that really isn't a concern if you want one. I'm absolutely convinced as a Huawei folding phone user for almost a year that Huawei make THE best folding phone available on the planet.

The Mate X/XS was fucking trash that scratched to hell if you looked at it funny and the plastic screen on this $2800 monstrosity felt like ass compared to proper uniform & solid feeling UTG displays from the competition. Huawei is and has been an also-ran for basically everything in smartphones for a long while now. 🤷 Oppo makes some good foldables, but Huawei makes junk.

yeah seen that kind of fracturing on the display on 3 different occasion, a Fold 1 demo before it got pulled because someone decided to prick it with their nails then the current Z flip Demo has a clear line on it. right now the new Z Fold 2 still hasn't, probably because the store decide to case it behind a plastic cage that you gotta ask the attendant to open so less people are getting the chance to be handsy with it
I'm 2 months into owning my fold 2 and absolutely love it. It's over the top considering I only read articles and watch a lot of UA-cam but it's such a great luxury

Talking about aspect ratios, the current trend from UA-cam smartphone/tech content creators doesn't look that great on a TV; it's akin to watching a movie with the original movie AR on an old 4:3 CRT.
While I haven't had one and probably will not have one for a long time. It is heartening to see OEMs doing something different/interesting in the otherwise rectangular slab world of smartphones. As always Michael an excellent video, keep up the good work! 👍
God I would love one of these if the outside screen came with an S-Pen (bonus points if it somehow works on the folding screen too, and without scratching the hell out of it)
Thanks for this video. My daily driver too is a Z Fold 2 and I wasn't aware of these cracks appearing in the centre crease. I've had my phone for 6 months now and I really do hope if this is going to happen, I hope it occurs before the Samsung Care expires, otherwise it will be a hefty cost to replace. Will keep an eye out for it and update on my experience.
This is the best LOOKING folding phone I think we've seen yet. I know you don't like it but I personally would rather no hole punch at all for the large screen. The way the device is wedge shaped to fit better in the hand, the way the bezels are the same size all the way around the device (seriously why can't every phone do this???), it's just the most visually appealing folding phone. It's the first one that really is starting to look like it could be a consumer device, minus the price and google stuff of course.
I had the exactly same cracks in my Z Fold 2s inner screen after about 6 months of continous use. But i got it replaced under guarantee no problem, and while using a S20FE in the meantime, it really stood out how much i got used to the big screen already
As someone who just got a Z Fold2 just a week ago I'm anxiously waiting for your follow up video on the topic. I've loved it so far but it's a shame ownership means you always have the worries of your phone one day randomly breaking.
Please continue this series. It's awesome and just saved me a lot of money as I like to buy flagships and use them extensively for an enthusiast (4 years) and settled on the foldable route for my next purchase but seeing how these phones can't really last even one year I guess I have to wait longer since yearly upgrades aren't my thing for environmental reasons.

Hey Michael, loving the whole into the fold series, I’ve just bought a Z flip 5G. Super excited for it. Where do you get those brilliant Star Trek communicator screensavers from?
The reason I go with a foldable is to get back to a size manageable phone, one- handed to be specific. I tried the Samsung offerings, but in the end, I stuck with my Razr 5G. I love that thing and that external display. I can do about everything one-handed with my small hand.
Loving the review perspective. I picked the S21 Ultra over the Fold 2 with the fear that you just confirmed. A few years to go for foldables to become mainstream durable, but I'm glas we're getting there. :)

That phone is gorgeous, I hope the next Samsung fold takes that lopsided kindle oasis like design and makes the outer screen a more sensible ratio. If it wasn't for the lack of wireless charging and the lack of a google play store, I think this would be my next phone unless the next fold is significantly better.
Thank you for giving more exposure to the foldable devices! While I do love my Z fold 2, and experiencing some weird glitch where half the screen intermittently doesn't turn on when unlocking the phone, the foldable phones are definitely the future.
I've had the Z Fold2 for 6 months. I can never go back to a traditional phone. Yes, I'm happy to be a guinea pig working out the technical kinks. It's that good.
In Germany for 11 dollars you can go to the restaurant (besides corona) and get a full meal, salad and a coke^^ I miss it ;(. But HelloFresh is also a nice Idea. We have a Vorwerk Thermomix, maybe take a look on this one as a tech youtuber!
I'm still using the original galaxy fold and don't have any of that cracking down the middle, so it's probably got something to do with the UTG perhaps? Anyway awesome video as always!

@@Leo23XR Nothing out of the ordinary. My original internal screen protector is pretty nasty at this point tho. I have an aftermarket screen protector, I just haven't taken the time to replace it. The pre-installed outer screen protector is still on mine, and is still in great shape. Have had the phone for 6 months now. Only thing I hated about the phone, was the lack of good case options for it. Lol

I had an identical issue with my fault to as you did when I went to Samsung and used the premier Service I was initially told the the cracks were caused by impact damage but after arguing that that doesn't make sense based on the way the cracks form they eventually repaired it for free but their service clearly was not premiere
Great video. I often get laughed at by my younger brother when I tell him I want a foldable device but despite the issues that could arise compared to a regular phone, I'm still very interested in one.
I would consider getting a foldable like this in a few years when they have figured some more of the “glitches” related to new concepts and the price point begins to drop. My biggest concern though (other than that potential cracking problem) is how protective phone cases will be for these. I tend to drop my phone more often than I should and that protective factor is really important. However, the potential for a cellphone that folds out into a mini tablet really appeals to me for work purposes, especially if there ends up being one with a stylus for signing documents since I currently pull out my iPad the handful of occasions I need to do that.
I've lost count on how many Duo calls I've had on the Fold 2 while folded! Still this looks slick! Can't wait for these things to become slimmer without battery life taking a hit
Great I just bought a fold 2 to go along with my note 20 ultra for work and a note 10 plus 5g for personal use. Only hope is that the fold 2 will hold up ok since it will only be used at home/weekends.
My Z flip did that unexpectedly! Was working perfectly for a year... Then one morning I woke up with a dead pixel. Hadn't dropped it or abused it. When I folded it shut, I heard distinct cracking noises. Opened it back up and a line of cracks across the middle. FML. A brand new one actually wound up to be cheaper than a replacement screen.
Really good presentation and information Mr. M. I remain unconvinced about foldables, mostly because of the issue you highlight in the samsung device but also that cost 😲 I can't see why someone wouldn't buy a really nice laptop instead and I love phone technology almost as much as yourself.

This wasn't a scratch. That's the UTG glass shattering down the fold line. The 1st Gen UTG on the Flip/5G & Fold 2 was SUUUUPER weak.

Man this is always fun, relaxing and very objetive, stay mobile man, be safe and take care of the Davids!
That's the major thing that puts me off getting a folding phone. The after care should anything go wrong and if I can prove it wasn't human error.
One question, did you remove the screen protector on your fold 2. The damage was that without the inner screen protector.

I wonder if they can use that TOF sensor when phone is opened. They can provide a great depth of field. It can also improve the focusing issue.

The price for this Huawei Mate X2 in my country RM16,000 = USD$3800...So expensive with no Google play..🤣🤣🤣

Great video. I often get laughed at by my younger brother when I tell him I want a foldable device but despite the issues that could arise compared to a regular phone, I'm still very interested in one.
Long term reviews, almost no one does it. This is why you get my views.
I would consider getting a foldable like this in a few years when they have figured some more of the “glitches” related to new concepts and the price point begins to drop. My biggest concern though (other than that potential cracking problem) is how protective phone cases will be for these. I tend to drop my phone more often than I should and that protective factor is really important. However, the potential for a cellphone that folds out into a mini tablet really appeals to me for work purposes, especially if there ends up being one with a stylus for signing documents since I currently pull out my iPad the handful of occasions I need to do that.
So far I don't think there are any otterbox type cases, but the mate x2 does offer a full flip front case.

Still this looks slick! Can't wait for these things to become slimmer without battery life taking a hit

Great I just bought a fold 2 to go along with my note 20 ultra for work and a note 10 plus 5g for personal use. Only hope is that the fold 2 will hold up ok since it will only be used at home/weekends.

My Z flip did that unexpectedly! Was working perfectly for a year... Then one morning I woke up with a dead pixel. Hadn't dropped it or abused it. When I folded it shut, I heard distinct cracking noises. Opened it back up and a line of cracks across the middle. FML. A brand new one actually wound up to be cheaper than a replacement screen.
Really good presentation and information Mr. M. I remain unconvinced about foldables, mostly because of the issue you highlight in the samsung device but also that cost 😲 I can't see why someone wouldn't buy a really nice laptop instead and I love phone technology almost as much as yourself.
