This is such a good list. I recently finished Hell House. The writing style is dated, but the story still holds up, creepy book! I am reading R. Saint Claire's dark collection called "Women in Trouble," and I just picked up Chouette by Oshetsky (I THINK it's horror, but I'm not sure), and I'm looking forward to Steve Stred's upcoming Mastodon because who doesn't love a good creature feature?🙂
You're diving into some classics! I'm scared to read Flowers in the Attic. Anyone f'ing with kids gets to me. A lot of those books are on my TBR (eventually), but specifically this year, I'd like to read the following: Cycle of the Werewolf by King Mexican Gothic by Garcia The Winter People by McMahon The Terror by Simmons Clown in a Cornfield by Cesare Hex by Heuvelt Haunted by Palahniuk Annihilation by Vandermeer Julia by Straub Dracula by Stoker Horrorstor by Hendrix The Mailman by Little House of Leaves by Danielewski December Park by Malfi Jaws, Jaws 2, The Deep by Benchley Little Heaven by Cutter
Great list. I recently read the Auctioneer and I enjoyed it. A very slow burn but it was well worth it. I’m also a huge Rosemary’s Baby fan, planning on re-reading the book this year.
The relic and it's sequel are decent. But I recommend the later books in the series starting with Brimstone. Dance of Death. And Book of the Dead. They make a solid trilogy.
Just this morning I was wishing that more BookTubers offered reviews and recommendations of older or lesser known books, and voila! Here you are! Thank you so much! 🥰🥰🥰

Awesome list, I actually put a few on my to-read list that I hadn't thought about before. I'm trying to read through a bunch of horror classics; The Stepford Wives is SO good!!! I also read Psycho next year and the book does such a good job at really giving a picture as to why Norman is so messed up.
I read the The Amityville Horror in my late teens and it scared the hell, out of me. I plan to do a reread of it to see if it still holds up. I started reading hell house expecting it to be scary as hell, well I think I had too high expectations because I thought the book kinda slow. I didn't finish it but I will give it another shot. Richard Matheson is a great writer though.
An excellent book. One of the best character studies ever; the film was visually/technically good, but Kubrick ripped the complex, nuanced characterisation right out of the work.
I too am trying to read what I already have instead of buying more lol, some big ones I'm trying to cross off my list are Psycho, IT and The Exorcist. Loved the movies for years and it's time I've read the books.
Wow, so many good books in that list. Ive only just found your channel but see yuve not made a video in a while. Will you be back. You are a very good speaker, an I love your content.
Hellhound Heart was really good, I really dig Clive Barkers writing style. I want to read more Valancourt books this year. I feel like I am always worried about new books that are coming out but I want to give some love to the classics.
The Other by Tryon is superb but his novel Harvest Home is even better, check it out. Kubrick's THE SHINING isn't much like King's book but definitely read the book, then follow it with Dr. Sleep, King's sequel, where we find Danny all grown up and ... affected. The Entity by DeFelita is superb, too, but not a companion to Audrey Rose.
I have read quite a lot on the amytiville horror as well as documentaries. What is true that the family that lived before the lutzes in that house were the Defoe family and a tragedy did happen that the drug addicted eldest son one night killed his entire family during the night when they were sleeping with a shot gun . This is true the son is still in jail or might have died recently . The lutzes were an actual family that did move into this house some time later at a reduced real estate price and were not aware of the history of what happened , and for reasons unknown at that time the entire family fled just 30 days later and left basically all their furniture and most of their possessions in the house . What then followed was the lutzes family account of what caused them to flee . Whether paranormal reasons were responsible is speculative . Of course books and movies were made about it and it's interesting in that way . Great list btw , if people like vampire books, the necroscope series is very good
This video just randomly appeared on my feed and HALLELUJAH I’m so happy because two things: 1) This list is stellar! I’ve read all of the titles you spoke about with the exception of maybe four (?). And yes NOS4A2 was amaze-balls. One of my fave contemporary horror novels. 2) Your hair is giving me life. I don’t know what that hue is, but it’s like this burning coals with flickering embers thing going on and it’s everything. Def subscribing to your channel!
What a list. Heart Shaped Box scared the crap out of me the first time I read it. It was a great book and I read it a second time and it wasn't as scary the second time but it was still great.
Hell House and The Haunting of Hill House have pretty much the exact same setup and plot, but they are different stories and both are absolutely worth reading, and though Hell House is obviously a nod to Shirley Jackson's classic, Richard Matheson does not rip her off at all.
Head Full of Ghosts is actually my favorite Trembley, though I wasn't wild about Devil's Rock. HFoG is a fantastic meditation on what it's like to have a mental illness, including clinical depression.
My TBR just got bigger. The only book I can’t read is Girl Next Door. I read about Sylvia’s true story. I cried so much that I don’t think I can read it.
I Love all these books. I love, “Amityville Horror,” because I lived near there at the time. The town had to put up a fence to keep kids like me off the property. (What do you expect - my bday is Halloween … 🤷♀️😁) I also really LOVE, “Relic.” Relic is especially good if you’ve spent significant time in the American Museum of Natural History. “Burnt Offerings,” scared me as a movie and book when I was a kid - more than any of the others. But, i saw jaws when I was 5 & loved it, so I may not be the best person to weigh in on what’s good. 🤷♀️😄
I started reading The Amityville Horror yesterday. Psycho is a favourite. I own The Other but have yet to read it. I recommend The Shining as an audiobook if that would help you get through it.
There is also a sequel to The Sentinel titled The Guardian. It's been a long time since I read them, but I know I liked both. In fact, I've read many of the books on this list, but so long ago I can't remember too much about some of them. One I haven't that is also on my tbr is Head Full of Ghosts. I've heard a lot of good things!
Have you ever seen the Hell House movie adaptation The Legend of Hell House? Interesting because it kinda backed off from the book's gross out take. Both highly recommended 😭 All of Matheson's writings are SO good no matter the genre.
You have so many excellent books on your TBR for this year, including some of my personal favorites like The Haunting of Hill House, Ghost Story and Legion. A Head Full of Ghosts, The House Next Door, The Shining, The Others,, The Sentinel and Burnt Offerings are really good too. I read The Amityville Horror. I love the movie, the book was okay. I didn't know The Omen was a novel before it was a movie.
I'm...kinda shocked by how many of these I've read! When I was a kid, I became obsessed with horror fiction and spent many hours at used bookstores looking for gems. This certainly affected my appreciation for the many sub-genres, old and new, as I grow older. Good times. Thank you for the trip down memory lane! 'Heart-Shaped Box' by Joe Hill is absolutely the business! 100% recommend this one - it's a heck of a ride! I listened to the audiobook of Paul Tremblay's 'The Cabin at the End of the World', and I think that probably works really well if the printed version was off-putting. It gets incrementally more intense with each page, and immersing yourself with a good narrator makes it a great experience. P.S.: Throw yourself into some Stephen King. Of all the horror I've read in my life, this guy just gets characters more than most. He's, well...The King!
Good suggestion to explore more SK and I’m sorry to hear a low opinion of how he writes his female characters since some of my favorites come from the SK universe. Those I love most are brave and strong, sometimes imperfect or weird, determined to overcome situations that threaten them or their loved ones… they are often the toughest mama bears or the most resilient children! Trisha McFarland (The Girl Who Lived Tom Gordon) Rose Daniels (Rose Madder) Dolores Claiborne Beverly Marsh (It) Jessie Burlingame (Gerald’s Game) Abra Stone (Dr. Sleep) Gwendy Peterson (Gwendy’s Button Box) Bobbie Anderson (Tommyknockers)
@@mandysmorgueofhorror I absolutely read the room (?!?!) wrong! My fool ears thought you said you hadn't read much of SK...and now I shall have to make an appointment to get my ears flushed. Or perhaps pay closer attention to what people are saying. My apologies. Aside from all that, I wanted to say your search for horror book gems is such a treat. It reminds me so much of myself from when I was about eleven, (continuing this practice into my forties+). Used bookstores are rare birds now, but there's been an apparent renewed interest in the printed word lately - so maybe new-old shops will appear in the near future. Nothing more enjoyable and engrossing than spending a few hours browsing through a used bookstore. Dang, the authors I discovered only to become FAVOURITE authors are what makes it all so epic!
@@shamblepants1450 I miss Borders bookstores (here in CA). One of the best first dates ever was talking about Halloween and haunted houses over dinner, picking up coffee at SBUX, then spending a couple of hours wandering around Borders browsing and sharing interesting books, but mostly the spooky stories. 🥰
Just found your channel tonight. This is a great list! I am.a big fan of the Shining. Ive read Haunting of Hill House. Several of these are on my tbr. Have you thought about doing any readalongs on your channel ot group reads/virtual book club?
Alot of stuff I grew up reading during High School and my early twenties! I'm glad 'Paperbacks from Hell' has renewed interested in a lot of these older books. I will admit, I will probably take a second look at LEGION because I honestly don't remember much of it. Other than I liked it. Id like to know what you think about it as well.
I love joe hill as well I've seen the adaptation of his movie horns and I also have a copy as well as a copy of Locke and key Which is a whole bind up of his 1st lock & key comics
i wouldnt say there is a lot of taboo stuff that goes on in flowers in the attic but there certainly is enough. there is a common theme that goes on in v.c. andrews books and i think that author might have a problem.
I wouldn't bother with Burnt Offerings, its so boring. The Amityville Horror is such a fun read; I devoured it. The Haunting of Hill House is one of my favourite books of all time, a classic cosy horror. The Shining is such an atmospheric book, so claustrophobic and tense! If you liked Rosemary's Baby, you'll definitely love The Stepford Wives, and its a very quick read too. I can't wait to read some of the other books you suggested.
I recently read a head full of ghosts and the cover had mention of Stephen king saying he never gets scared but this book scared him (or something similar). I loved the book but I didn't feel scared at any point. Still a worthwhile read though!
So happy to have found your channel!! Your recs seem cool and you're the first person I hear mention King's problems with female characterizations. My TBR list is getting way too long now...
I think the Amityville Horror book is OK. I gave it a 3, which is still good. The mystery surrounding it seems better. And I think it plays out better as a movie. I think in some Libraries you can find it in the Non-Fiction section. I haven't finished A Head Full Of Ghost. It got a little annoying to me. 😁 I hope to get into some of these more mainstream titles this year, but I also said that last year. The Indie scene is still hot.
This is the year I will finally read The Call of Cthulu, I'm determined 😂 also I plan to finish James Herbert's The Rats series. (I've read the first two and regardless of what anyone says I think they're amazing)
Relic is awesome the next three are really good to up to still life with crows from brimstone it slowly weakens but I've still read all the pendagast up to.date.
relic and its sequel reliquary are absolutely worth it, two of my faves. the rest i'm hate reading at this point to see what the fuck will happen, the ending of the most recent book (Bloodless, #20) had the most bonkers "plot twist" ending so i'm sticking around LOL
Turn of the screw is pretty much the horror novel that is probably the most adapted horror story out of them all. And suffer the children is one of the most disturbing books I have ever read.
Great video, Subbed straight away nice to find more Booktubers with a horror focus, I agree on the want to buy more books I had £5 left in my paypal and was like "Do I have any books in my watch list I can afford?" The Auctioneer is one of my favorite books a very slow burn but it was exactly what I needed when I read it, I need to read burnt offerings I was sick when I started it so had to drop it, Recently got Amityville, Not read Legion yet have seen and loved the movie (Hated part 2 it was awful) I have a lot I want to read, Let's go play at the adams is on my list for next month, Also want to get through the rest of the PBFH line, Hellbound hart for sure, Really want to read The elementals and gosh so many my shelves are gonna break with the weight of books.
I just finished with Flowers in the attic and I was pretty let down by it. I know people really like the book but the ending is what ruined it for me. Idk if youve seen the older movie but I definitely prefer the movie ending over the book even if the movie is kinda cringy Also, I totally feel you with liking Joe hills writing more than Kings lol. Sometimes King can drag his stories and Joe gets more to the point lol
A good solid list. I've read about four of these. I started reading Ghost Story about five or six years ago, and I couldn't get into it, but I am planning to reread it soon for this year. Heart Shaped Box is Hill's debut novel. It is an interesting take on the classic ghost story. It's much more of a cat and mouse game novel, and it takes some gory turns about halfway through. The Shining is a classic. It's much, much better than the film in my opinion. The film is a poor adaption, but watching it as a film and not as an adaptation, yeah, I can see why it's considered as a horror classic. The Relic is a very good debut for Preston and Child, and it's a good start in their catalog. There is a direct sequel to the novel (it's good, but not as good) before they start using the main FBI agent in the first two novels as the main character in the later books (pretty much like their take on the X-Files). The Hellbound Heart is a bit different than the movie. Pinhead isn't really the iconic character we know in the novel, and in fact, the Cenobites are more in the background, more so compared to the film. If you like The Hellbound Heart, then I suggest reading The Scarlet Gospels soon after. I've watched The Keep, and I bought a copy of the book (still waiting in my ever-growing TBR pile). The movie was descent, and it has interesting concept and ideas.
@@mandysmorgueofhorror he's much more a completely different character compared to the movie, and he, well, it hints it's more of a she, is only at the beginning and ending, if I can remember correctly. I don't want to give away too much.
Loved Paperbacks From Hell too. I literally grew up with many of these books around me because my mother is an avid reader. Now that I’m older And reading more many of these are high on my tbr. The Auctioneer and The Sentinal are my top picks. Also Naomis Room is if I can ever find it. I just know my mom has it somewhere.
@@johngalt2069 I will have to add Naomi's Room to my never ending TBR list. I have the Auctioneer on my list too. I've been a reader since I was a kid and looking back I am so glad I kept a lot of my childhood/teenage year books.
I still like the audiobook version of hellbound heart I found on UA-cam Several years ago I know it's very good but I still liked it And the free Audiobook version of Kabul AKA Night breed Which I listen to a few years ago that was good, But more explicit than I would have liked,
That copy of the keep looks awesome I have the repair man jack books by the same author I just read a book called tastes like candy by Ivy Token It takes place at a Halloween themed carnival in Texas Involves a group of incoming senior girls who have been challenged to scavenger hunt by the outgoing graduates And shenanigans and insue
Wow, that's a bold statement! I loved A Head Full of Ghosts, Horns and NOS4A2. I could live without some of the stories in 20th Century Ghosts and Strange Weather, but overall, his collection of work is outstanding. I haven't read The Fireman yet. Any good?
This is such a good list. I recently finished Hell House. The writing style is dated, but the story still holds up, creepy book! I am reading R. I recently read a head full of ghosts and the cover had mention of Stephen king saying he never gets scared but this book scared him (or something similar). I loved the book but I didn't feel scared at any point. Still a worthwhile read though!
I’ve heard many mixed things about it being scary or not. I’m definitely excited to read it!
So happy to have found your channel!! Your recs seem cool and you're the first person I hear mention King's problems with female characterizations. My TBR list is getting way too long now...
A genuine question, as in emphatically not some veiled attack/fight initiation. What are King's problems with female characters?
I think the Amityville Horror book is OK. I gave it a 3, which is still good. The mystery surrounding it seems better. And I think it plays out better as a movie. I think in some Libraries you can find it in the Non-Fiction section.
I haven't finished A Head Full Of Ghost. It got a little annoying to me. 😁
I hope to get into some of these more mainstream titles this year, but I also said that last year. The Indie scene is still hot.
The House Next Door is GREAT! I loved it. The author, although prolific and wonderful, never wrote another spooky book!! Darn!
That makes me so sad!
I also like The Keep and the Ghost Story movie. The books ate great.
that sweat shirt is awesome!!
OMG where can I get the sweatshirt 🥰
It’s from Dumbgood!
Your commentary on Joe Hill made me 🤣. You're beautiful ✨ btw, in case somebody didn't tell you this, today ☺
👻Spooky great list Mandy 📚 🦇
The Relic is a rippin' good read.
Read burnt offerings many years ago. Plus saw the movie with better davis! 100% horror fun both book and movie!
relic and its sequel reliquary are absolutely worth it, two of my faves. the rest i'm hate reading at this point to see what the fuck will happen, the ending of the most recent book (Bloodless, #20) had the most bonkers "plot twist" ending so i'm sticking around LOL
Everyone says such good things about The Relic!
@@mandysmorgueofhorror it’s easily in my top ten favorite books that I’ve read, the movie adaptation is bullshit I don’t recommend it 😂
LOVE the relic!!
I absolutely loved Legion!!! So different to The Exorcist, but at the same time not. Also, it has nothing to do with the movie/book of the Exorcist.
So many books, so little time!
I agree with what you said about Joe Hill😉
I just finished with Flowers in the attic and I was pretty let down by it. I know people really like the book but the ending is what ruined it for me. Idk if youve seen the older movie but I definitely prefer the movie ending over the book even if the movie is kinda cringy
Also, I totally feel you with liking Joe hills writing more than Kings lol. Sometimes King can drag his stories and Joe gets more to the point lol
The newer movie they made is closer to the book and has better acting. I like the original movie for what it was but some of it is too cringey for me.
I read the Full Throttle short story collection by Joe Hill and I really liked it. Hoopla has the audio :)
I really need to get to that one eventually!
This is an excellent list. If you ever wanted to buddy read one of these with your viewers I'd be down.
I get very nervous about Buddy reading because it puts a weird mental pressure on myself lol.
That’s interesting to learn Pinhead wasn’t as large of a character in the story. Thank you for your insight!
@@mandysmorgueofhorror he's much more a completely different character compared to the movie, and he, well, it hints it's more of a she, is only at the beginning and ending, if I can remember correctly. I don't want to give away too much.
I love your sweatshirt so much
Love seeing some of the Paperbacks from Hell on here. Just finished Familiar Spirit by Lisa Tittle, so good.
I want to read that one too!
@@johngalt2069 I love Naomi’s Room!
@@johngalt2069 I will have to add Naomi's Room to my never ending TBR list. I have the Auctioneer on my list too. I've been a reader since I was a kid and looking back I am so glad I kept a lot of my childhood/teenage year books.
@@mandysmorgueofhorror It was good. Surprising too. I enjoyed it. I am finding a new love for horror novels.
The Keep and The House Next Door are really, really good. Hi from the Philippines.
Hi! I am looking forward to reading both.
I still like the audiobook version of hellbound heart I found on UA-cam Several years ago I know it's very good but I still liked it And the free Audiobook version of Kabul AKA Night breed Which I listen to a few years ago that was good, But more explicit than I would have liked,
The Auctioneer is SO SO SO good!
Everyone is making me want to read it even more
im reading "Hater" by david moody...i can see that happening
I read that years ago and remember enjoying it!
If you haven't read them how can you recommend them?
It’s more like hey these books are on my tbr and you might want to consider them too if they sound interesting to you!
"the relic" was a good movie.
I’m waiting to watch the film after I read the book!
That copy of the keep looks awesome I have the repair man jack books by the same author
I just read a book called tastes like candy by Ivy Token
It takes place at a Halloween themed carnival in Texas Involves a group of incoming senior girls who have been challenged to scavenger hunt by the outgoing graduates And shenanigans and insue
Burnt Offerings has been on my TBR forever! Definitely want to read it this year
2022 is gonna be the year we read it!
I love most of the books on this list! Yes! Joe Hill is better! Without a doubt!
Wow, that's a bold statement! I loved A Head Full of Ghosts, Horns and NOS4A2. I could live without some of the stories in 20th Century Ghosts and Strange Weather, but overall, his collection of work is outstanding. I haven't read The Fireman yet. Any good?
Love Ghost Story by Peter Straub
I need to read Legion so bad
Big same lol
The sentinel book scared the living ..... even more than the movie. Guys read the book first. Trust me on this one.
I like the idea of stephen king books but the execution just isn't for me. I read pet sematary, the shining and it.
READ BRIAN KEENE THE DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN.
Girl same with Clive Barker. I hate body horror! It just grosses me out. I don't find it scary just gross lol
Cabin in the woods sucks. A head full of ghosts was a good one.
A found a channel for my little dark soul!! 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
Yay!! Welcome 👻

Truth😸😸😸😸😸👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
you have not read the Shinning? No more you tube until this is done. Ha.
I have read it, but it was years ago. I didn’t like it. I wanna give it another try though because I think I read it at the wrong time in my life.
The house next door sucked, big time
I’m first!
To read in 2022?? Well most people have already read them in the 70s, the 80s and the 90s. You are way behind sweetie.
Lol it’s more of the books I want to get to in 2022!
