    This is so so helpful. Thank you. I've got my hook. I've written first 4000words. I now realise I've been stalling over past couple of months due to uncertainty over where to put main focus of memoir: my unusual upbringing/character (the hook) or on the damage caused(effect). Plus it's so easy to lose my nerve.

      It is an interesting comment you make, "It is so easy to lose my nerve". You are quite right, writing our stories can feel like a huge task and one that can stir some things up in us. The focus of your memoir should be you and the message you want to convey to your reader. The unusual upbringing and the cause (effect) from that should be in the story to illustrate your journey.

    Hi Brenda,
    Can their be two inciting incidents?
    I have the hook (parents separation) but there are two incidents that play a part in a journey of change. The first incident creates confusion, and the second creates turmoil and heavily impacts the relationship with one of my parents.

      It could be that one of the inciting incidents is actually an obstacle, or they could work in tandem to put you on your journey.

    It seems like the good memoir is more than just the story itself, more its the way the story is told. Would you agree? Can i purchase your course if in UK?

      Yes, you can certainly buy my course if you are in the UK. Here is the link: brendasmitjames.thinkific.com/courses/create-your-memoir-blueprint-from-premise-to-promise
      As this is an online course you can purchase it from anywhere in the world.
      To answer your question, how you tell the story depends on your personal story telling style but good storytelling skills certainly does set your memoir apart.

    Great instructions! I've been contemplating the difference between my story and my journey. I am not totally clear about it. I think my story is the story of my journey. It seems very similar to me. I guess my question is, what is the exact difference between my story and my journey?

    • @BrendaSmitJames
      @BrendaSmitJames  Рік тому +1

      That is a good question, Christi! The beginning of your story is where you choose to start your memoir in chapter 1. Your journey starts after the inciting incident once you've moved into Act 2 of your story. The inciting incident initiates your journey of change, challenge, transformation, or learning that you bring to a climax and resolution in Act 3.

    I have a lot of confusion regarding these. I think that my story's hook is my MC knowing that she's pregnant and struggling with the desire to have that child and give her marriage (which was about to end) another chance or choosing to abort clashing with the fear of not being able to save her marriage and have to raise her two children on her own with a debilitating health or dealing with the guilt of an abortion if she chooses to do so. The inciting incident would be something that pushes MC to make a decision regarding the baby. But isnt the pregnancy the inciting incident at the same time? I have no idea where to start my story! Do I begin before she figures out she's pregnant like for example when she discovers her husband's betrayal and wants to divorce him or do I begin when she discovers she's pregnant?! I'm really lost on this one...
