  • Tucker and I went to our very first-ever cross-country schooling! It was the most fun (and mentally challenging) thing I’ve done in a while 😎 It feels good to be getting back out there, and it’s nice to see Tucker moving well and working off the winter stiffness he usually gets.

Awww well done you & Tucker!!! That’s so awesome to see! And thank you for leaving in some of the struggles with the drop! It’s so nice to know that everyone has issues with some things and your patience and kindness to your boy waiting for him to work it out is beautiful 🤩

Yes! Agreed…Thanks for sharing the struggles. I’m working on regaining confidence and rebuilding trust with my guy (he’s also sensitive) and it can feel defeating sometimes. It’s a nice reminder that struggles are part of the process. You and Tucker were awesome.

I really enjoyed this, Carmella. Cross country is one of my favorite disciplines to watch. I hope to see you and Tucker do more of it. Honestly, it seemed like Tucker quite enjoyed himself.

I really appreciated your showing how you worked with Tucker on the new skill, how you broke it down for both of you, and the steps you took to get the team comfortable with it. I also appreciated that you let us know how much time it took you. I'm starting on my training journey and these sorts of things are super helpful for me to manage my expectations and consider different approaches to tricky new skills for my horse.

You and Tucker have such a great partnership built over time and experience. He's a very smart guy and you are exactly right taking the time to familiarize him and yourself with those obstacles. Slow is the fast way with horses and to try to force a horse is asking for real problems. You were right to acknowledge and deal with your own uncertainty too. Tucker would feel that hesitation and perform accordingly. Very well done both of you. ❤❤

This looked so fun! I do mostly western and I have horses more so built for reining that don’t like jumping so I don’t do much of this stuff, great job getting tucker down the bank though! My horses are usually used to high drops because we have a trailer that doesn’t have a ramp so they have to learn to jump in and out

Coming from an eventer, It probably would have been better to start with the drop witout the water because you dont have the factor of the water as another stressor. Because they dont have good depth perception it will be better for him to see the ground rather than jumping into water that he doesnt know the depth of if that makes sense.

Hi there, I don't care how good or bad some of the things are, I love your videos because they are real & honest!!. I have a horse that is sensitive as well, he feels like he can't step all the way over a pole then back over it. Can you help with this😊

Awesome!! I see you have a double neck strap on him….wondering why you use that? I want to get one because I’ve taken two bad falls in the last year on two separate horses; ended up with fractured ribs the first time and a sprained neck and concussion on the second one. Thanks for your input.

I use the strap to grab onto so I don’t hit the horse in the mouth, like if the horse over jumps or a get thrown back, anything like that. It’s just an extra stirrup strap. I learned this from foxhunting!

I love xcountry and I am very lucky to have a course of many kinds of obstacles and a fantastic coach right at my barn. My coach always says that you have to have everything ready 6 strides before the jump….speed, impulsion and commitment. If you have those things right and you are supporting your horse during those last 6 strides then things have a pretty good of going well. When it comes to doing the drops…my coach taught me to practice going down by sitting back in much the same manner you would if you were riding down a steep incline on a trail ride. Let your horse have their neck so they can balance themselves properly. Do it one handed so you can hold the front of the saddle for some help to keep your balance and be ready to gather up your reins once you are safely and securely on the regular footing again.

Me wanting to check out your channel to just realize this video was uploaded one hour ago and there defenitly won't be any more cross country videos 😂 Lovely job for your first time schooling!
