Glad you mentioned the eyes. I rarely see anyone mention the look in a horse's eyes, but that was always one of my best guage of the horse's thoughts. Also, pay attention to their "wrinkles" and "frowns." A horse in pain, fear, worry, etc creates facial expressions just like people do. Notice when they wrinkle their nose or frown, or get wrinkles around their eyes or forehead. They're just like people when using facial expressions. If you're mad, you frown. So do horses. If you're worried, your crow's feet wrinkle up. So do horses. Thank you for mentioning their eyes though. Almost nobody ever mentions that.
I do not currently own any horses, but I used to spend weeks during the summer with my uncle who owned two horses, a white mare named Daisy (who was blind in her right eye), and a brown and white paint stallion named Thunder, who was extremely unpredictable and deemed unrideable. I was only 7 when I met Thunder and Daisy for the first time. Daisy tolerated my presence, but didn't seem to care much at all. Thunder on the other hand, for reasons no one has ever been able to explain, fell madly in love with me and absolutely refused to leave my side! He was so gentle and calm around me that my uncle even let me handle him by myself, which of course meant that I tried to ride him while no one was watching, even though everyone told me it was a bad idea. I was 9, I had no idea what I was doing, and I absolutely nailed it! 😎 Thunder had ZERO objections to his best friend riding him, and he could not have been more of a natural at following my simple commands. My uncle and mother nearly lost it when they saw us, but after it became clear that Thunder was totally fine with it, I was allowed to continue riding him. After a year of only allowing me to ride him, Thunder finally let my uncle ride him for the first time. After that, Thunder started letting my aunt and my mom ride him as well, and my uncle started jokingly calling me Thor. Thunder and I remained close friends and riding buddies for several years, until he passed in his sleep at the age of 29 back in 2017. He was a good friend and I miss him dearly. He always used to play with the back of my head, neck, and hair with his lips to get my attention. He also used to flip his ears back, stomp his right right foot once, and plant himself if he just didn't want to go anywhere. He could be quite stubborn sometimes, but he was never aggressive or violent with anyone after we became friends. To this day I wish I could be a kid again, just riding Thunder in the Florida sun until we both got tired and lay down for a nap in the field 🥲
awww. yeah, stallions are normally more aggressive because of hormones. (that’s why we get our male horses nurtured and so they don’t have any problems or get any mares pregnant) not all stallions are aggressive, but we still have to be careful with them in the equestrian world. and yes, 29 is about the life expectancy for a horse. (one of my ponies died at age 30.) I’m glad you had a great experience with Thunder! 🌩️❤️
I'm writing a story that includes horses, but I've never thought to deeply about horses body language till right now as I'm trying too write about it, and this was exactly what I needed!
So pleased to see your horse "in your space"! I loved my horse in my space, meant he wanted to be with me. I didn't mind his antics either, licking me, nibbling me with his lips, resting his head on my shoulder or top of my head, rubbing his face on my chest or back (scratching himself), sometimes he would lean against me without pushing or knocking me over. Most of all I LOVED to play with him in horse play! Chasing him, chasing me, racing on foot to a barrel, stall with treats, and cheering when he ran in pasture! Oh my he could RUN! ***LOVE LOVE LOVE to see you with Tucker and your relationship with him!***
Don’t own a horse, but my daughter loves riding and I’m just trying to learn more about this. This is a great channel and very informative. Keep it up!
I don’t have a horse I don’t ride horses and I basically know nothing about them but I love them so much I think they’re such beautiful, admirable creatures and I really want to learn about their behaviors even if that knowledge won’t really go anywhere in my life😅
Years ago, one of my friend’s horses accidentally stood on my unprotected foot. It hurt like hell and he got off straight away. But after that, either he got a taste for blood, or he was trying to apologise to me, because he kept following me around and looking at me with his head lowered a bit, eyes almost as if he was telling me he was sorry and he wanted to know if I was doing ok. Dunno if I’m reading too much into it, but he was such a sweetheart.
My horse accidentally stepped on my foot, once, she was overly excited and got ahead of her self. As soon as she realized what happened, she didn’t leave my side, nuzzling me, while I sat on the ground making sure nothing was broken. He most definitely could of noticed what happened, and wanted to make sure you’re okay.
My favorite mare sometimes did a strange thing : while I was grooming her I was feeling something heavy on one of my feet. It was her, she put one of her hooves on my foot. Not to do a bad thing, to hurt me or it would have been more violent. I put my foot back. I do not really understand why she did that.. We have a special bond for 2 years. She is a school horse, a former racehorse, a pure English thoroughbred. Sometimes only a tiny little light in her eye makes me know she 's asking me for a little hug too. She is what riders call a difficult horse but to me... she is a princess who chosen me . She also keeps her head on the hay, to eat non stop, when I was absent for a too long time. Biting others, less than before, never myself except nipping my thumb skin if I 'm speaking too much, according to her, with another rider. When I leave, my sweet mare is anxious, swinging her head from side to side. I reassure her til she stops. One horsewoman said to me she, my mare, was behaving the horse belonging to an owner. I 'm sad to never be able to be her owner one day ! 🐴❤ Other riders are jealous... 😕
So I work with my neighbors horses and the one who’ve I’ve been working with is named scarlet. She’s an Arab and when she was little a man abused her so she is very scared timid and meek, which is not like most Arabs. Anyways I’ve been working with her a lot bc she needs a friend( my neighbors other horses aren’t particularly nice to her) the other day I was just sitting in her in the barn and everytime one of my neighbors other horses would look at me on scarlet, she would put her ears flat back and get defensive. She never did that any of the times I was with her on the ground in the barn. My neighbor told me that she is saying to t he other horses “back off! She’s mine!” Anyway it was just cute and nice to know that we rly are bonding
I’m kinda doing the same thing but the lady I work for is a little farther away! Anyway I also just started going so she said we have to find the horse we wanna work with and stuff so we’re doing ground work and so I’m walking him around and he was broke last year and ridden two times, I’ll have to ask what breed he is, I know hes supposed to be a short breed but he’s pretty tall, again I’ll have to ask how many hands he is but my guess between 14 and 15 hands maybe taller, his name is legs, so I haven’t ridden him yet but I’ll update you when she lets me ride!! But the lady sends us out in the pasture by ourselves! So she trusts us
When I had my Cody, there was something adorable he would do. Whenever I would be beside his left shoulder at times, he would turn his head and snuggle into my arm. He was always gentle about not pushing me over. He was a sweet boy❤
I’m about to inherit 2 horse ranches and I know absolutely nothing about them. Thank you so much for your very informative videos. I have watched every single one you’ve made…and now, I’m going to watch them again until it all sinks in. You have no idea how grateful I am to have found your channel. Sincerely…a great full kiwi
My sister-in-law just moved into a beautiful home with three horses, and being around those horses today released a passion Emmy I never knew was there, and now one of my life goals is to own at least one horse. I just felt complete around them, which is strange because I never expected it. They’re so beautiful, and I really want to get to know them. Thanks for the video, ‘‘twas tremendously helpful!!
Plz before u get a horse DO UR RESEARCH! They r a lot of work. and too many people get a horse and then just let it wither away in a field, or starve to death, or be abused until they die not that people would do that on purpose but it very important to educate ur self when getting or about to get a new animal or thing especially a horse. No hate I just want two remind people to do their research, too many people don’t
I rode a very nervous horse for about three years. (I don't ride her much anymore but visit her at the stables) and she often got very anxious when standing still. She also had problems with wither soars and needed extra the saddle. If she was ever feeling pain in her withers or was anxious while I was riding her she would turn her head back to look at me, and bump my foot with her nose. I'm glad she was easily able to communicate this with me so I wasn't causing her any pain, I know some horses aren't as visible with their body language so I always felt grateful that she let me know before it got to painful and then she would just buck me off instead!
This is very helpful! My neighbor’s horse is very nervous, and I’ve been working with him while the neighbors are out of town. My horses are very calm and old, but my neighbor’s horse is very VERY nervous and spooky. I’m not used to his behavior, so I’ll catch when he’s about to really lose it, but I have a hard time telling when he’s moderately uncomfortable. This was very in depth, thank you.
our mare wouldnt stay in the barn to eat like I wanted her to, when we first got her. Then one night i had Simple by FGL in my head so I was singing . That night, she stayed in the barn until she was done her pellets. So now I sing when I'm around her and it has done wonders for our relationship. In fact, other horses at our saddleclub seem to apprecitate my singing too! They whinny at me when they see me coming now. Love your channel too btw.
I have watched this video before, but felt I needed a refresher, just to make sure I'm being diligent in watching my horse's cues to how she is feeling & thinking. Thanks again for this video. As my skillset has improved (thanks for your help), my relationship with my mare has improved. She's more trusting, curious, & has learned that her new owner(me) doesn't need a bite or kick to understand her wishes, but I still watch for cues because she could have a trigger we have yet to explore together. We are still building our relationship of trust & respect & I appreciate trainers such as yourself for sharing tips that work. Keep 'em coming please.
I swear you go through my search history. Two days ago I searched this up and today you just posted a video about it. This happens for all your other videos too!
i dont own a horse, but ive been begging my parents for one. i heard them talking and i think they are purchasing one. this channel has been such an inspiration for a 12 year old like me and now i think i have enough knowledge to give this tiny colt the best life ever
My late horse used to start pulling the reigns with a timing only when she was afraid of something. She was a great horse not a single mean bone on her body. RIP Quimera 🐎 She died from old age she lived amazing 26 years
My sweet babygirl is doing her SSL hours on a 400 acre field with stables and farms next week and she's excited to help out in the stables. It's absolutely amazing because it's nonprofit that works disabled individuals. My babygirl want to learn all she can about horses because she want to own one someday. Thanks for this video I sent it to her so when she starts working with horses next week she will have some knowledge about them😊 new subie!!
I've not been around horses a ton, but do see them at a bit of a distance very regularly, here in Arizona. My best friend as a kid was horse obsessed, owned at least one, and her parents worked a track, father was a jockey trainer. I think I managed to learn more watching my friend mimic horses, to a point where actually being around horses had me pretty confident. It was a nice feeling to know most of the things explained in your vid, though the bit about the tail tuck was new to me. One of my favorite behaviors is probably eager lip flapping, when they want to play and get moving, or lots of loving or appreciative head bumps to their handler and gentle nibbles of clothes, pulling them to hurry up. lol
Your videos are really well done. I've thought about getting horses someday, and you are very informative and educational. You are also gorgeous. Keep up the good work!
Ooh! Perfect. My horse was abused before we got her, I'm trying to figure her out. I got her a week ago today. I've ridden her many times, and decided I wanted her so yeah. I'm working with her and stuff for trust, and she does body language I think. Thank you for this videooo ❤
Thankyou so much for this video i loan a horse in uk as i am english and i have autism but love being down at the yard with the welsh cob mare i loan beauty her name is and she is around about 16 to 17 she is a great schooling horse and i call her my 4 legged daughter lol but sometimes communication is hard she is stubborn but sweet but it is always good to know a horse personality and communication to be able to work effectivley as a team
I don't have a horse currently because a) I have no money, and b) I have no time (medical formative years are tough), but I love horses, so I need to know things before I make enough money to buy and keep one. Watching videos of people who are experienced with them is very entertaining and informative.
Just started a job and they have 2 male horses. Thank you so much for this video, even after 2 years! Very good to know what to look out for! Thank you!
Actually loving the content here. Any time I can learn something new. I have wanted horses since I was a child. I'm 56 and haven't had my chance. There's so much to learn.
I just got my first two horses. I used to ride all the time and love our four legged friends. I'm already recognizing some of the physical expressions in them both, just watching this. Perfect amount of information shared here.
Thank you for all your help. I do not have a horse in my house, but I love them. It is good to know how to approach these creatures and be comfortable and happy🐎
I am in equine psychotherapy right now. Just as I joined the program, a rescue miniature-horse named Bill joined the ranch. I have been spending every session working to understand Bill and help him regain trust. Right now he won't allow anyone to put a halter on him 😢 I know that these processes take time but I really want to help him. This information was useful. Thank you.
i’ve been riding for a while but only doing lessons, i’m starting to volunteer at my local barn to help with my mental health and although i have been riding for a while i don’t know a whole lot about horses body language so i’m really making an effort to learn so i can better understand them
Finally getting into lesson soon after around 7 years of waiting. Want to make sure I have at leastma bit of a better understanding of these animals for when I go. Thank you, very informative! ;D
I have a horse and on a competition my sister was filming when I watched it I say that my horse injoyed it and on lessons when I am walking or just resting my horse puts the neck low and just relaxing thank you very much for telling know I have much more confidence and now I know so thank you very very much
Horses can say a lot. They are just like people. I got close to a horse and I saw it’s eyes and it’s ears as well and it allowed me to pet him on the side of its head and it sniffed my shirt. And it was fun.😀
When i put my little brown pony into the fold, she will always following me, and looking after me, while im cleaning up after her. She will do that until i go home. So sweet!
Mig, my Arabian horse, when there is a fly that is bugging him, he will dig whatever body part the fly is on into my side, stomach, arm, shoulder, or my spine
My mares turn their butt to the fence towards me when they want something. Either they are hungry, thirsty or upset about something. We call it the “butt treatment “. 😂
I believe that’s actually disrespectful behavior towards you! Not good- a horse should never be permitted to give you what you’re calling “the butt treatment”!
@@melindak.21 Yes, she never does it when we are near or she would get in trouble. They often do it when they know we are leaving on vacation. We see the butt treatment in our rear view mirror. We can see it from inside the house as well if something is not to their liking in their pasture. They are not ever allowed to do anything of the sort when we are handling them. They know who the alpha is!
I've watched a few of your videos so far, and subscribed to the channel. You are a very good instructor! I'm currently taking English Saddle lessons and your videos have really helped me make good adjustments. I thank you, and if Millie could speak, I'm sure she'd thank you, too. :-)
Although you can stay safe around a horse, you can't always read silent communication because not everyone knows silent communication Even if you know a little bit, get to know the basics When my Pappy was living and we spent time on his horse farm, believe me, it was a BLAST! We really didn't know much about language, but we knew enough to stay safe We had a mixture of horses and ponies, and it didn't matter if you were kid or grownie, grownies could ALSO ride PONIES as well as HORSES I was one of those leisure riders that didn't ride hard at all, and most times, I rode bareback, unless I was in a saddle for a short time, especially for a trail ride or a ride on the road near home None of our horses or ponies had any trouble carrying us except for one that had trouble with her Withers and could collapse with you on her back, so we returned her to the Sugar Creek horse auction We had joy and fun on that horse farm!
Thank you for taking the time to do this, a lot can be intuitive if you’ve always been around many different species but it’s nice confirmation when you’re not level barrel rider lol
Thank you it's very informative, i want to ask something why my horse always bring her 2 front feet up in the air every time i go check her in the pasture? Is she angry or happy to see me?
A horse normally only does that when there's no other way out of a situation (so they can't move back or going back doesn't bring them what they wanted so they go up). For example a horse during riding has pain in the mouth from pulling and the horse moves back and the rider still pulls on the mouth or starts hurting in another way maybe kicking, then the horse goes up. But in your situation I'm a bit confused. If it happens a lot i'd advice you to talk to a Vet to see if something else is going on.
I am very much new to this whole equestrian thing, and while I know that horses have feelings and all, it's still hard for me to understand them. I know that a horse's hind legs are one of the most dangerous parts of their body as their kicks are no joke, but I would love to bond with horses of any kind really. I don't have a horse of my own right now and as much as I would love to have one, my mom will not let me. So, I would like to thank you as this video will help me understand them more.
Great information! The only thing that was kind of overlooked, when the horse is nervous, or scared, is that they won't blink their eyes... otherwise, great stuff. ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎
My horse Diesel is prone to itchiness due to bug bites. If he gets fidgety in the cross-ties, it's because he has an itch that he's desperate to scratch. I briefly undo the cross-ties so he can bite/scratch the itchy spot and then reattach the ties. Some people might think fidgeting is "bad behavior," but I've learned to recognize it as discomfort.
Know exactly what you mean. One paint horse we had was a real sweetheart. But sometimes when I turned around on the trail she would see the barn. Her head would then perk up quickly (which meant "Hold On") and she would break into a gallop believing you wanted an express ride. I really loved her.
I know nothing about horses, but this was such an enjoyable and interesting video. The hostess is so engaging - what a sweetie. Congrats to all involved in the production of this video.
I was around horses for over 40 years & didn't know some of that! (well we didn't have the internet back then, haha! ;) ) Very interesting and informative, thank you 👍
Carmella, Your video was informative, entertaining and genuine. I will be on a horse tomorrow morning after almost 4 years and feel more ready and confident thanks to your video! :)
you're so talented with reading horses, I wish you trained parents how to read their (our) kids! I know I could use some help especially with teenagers!
What a nice video that horse just loves you you can tell he trust you completely it’s so adorable. You can really tell you’ve earned his trust and that he feels so safe with you.❤️❤️❤️
My paint mare has been showing her teeth more but her ears are very perked up. She seems to be very comfortable around my daughter, my daughter lays in the hay by her while she eats and the horse just eats around her. She also laid down and let my daughter pet her. Very informative, I’m learning quite a bit
Just this morning my gelding was unusually grouchy. He pinned his ears slightly back and turned away and walked off. I went after him, flagged him back and checked him out. He was fine, just grouchy due to the huge change in weather from the 70s to 40s with lots of cold wind. I just brought him to the round pen, sat down on my block and watched him have a good roll. We made the best of it and relaxed.
6:38 I love how she says "sometimes relaxed horses will sigh"
Tucker 2 seconds later: Sighs
Tucker, another 2 seconds later: Poots
The fact that her horse is showing literally every sign of being relaxed
I don’t even have a horse but I’m able to say that this channel is underrated.

SUPER HELPFUL! I love her sincere love for horse training tips!
Thank you Tina!
our mare wouldnt stay in the barn to eat like I wanted her to, when we first got her.
I’m going to a ranch today with a lot of retired military horses and I’ve learned so much from you. Thanks!
I have watched this video before, but felt I needed a refresher, just to make sure I'm being diligent in watching my horse's cues to how she is feeling & thinking. Thanks again for this video. As my skillset has improved
(thanks for your help), my relationship with my mare has improved.
This happens for all your other videos too!
i dont own a horse, but ive been begging my parents for one. i heard them talking and i think they are purchasing one. this channel has been such an inspiration for a 12 year old like me and now i think i have enough knowledge to give this tiny colt the best life ever
i really admire how dedicated u are to making videos and putting this helpful information out there it’s really amazing
My late horse used to start pulling the reigns with a timing only when she was afraid of something. She was a great horse not a single mean bone on her body. RIP Quimera 🐎
She died from old age she lived amazing 26 years
Detailed and so useful. Amazing how much there is to learn!
i don’t really know 😂
Thank you! I’m still learning new ways my horses communicate and why they do what they do!
Love that you talk abort tension - and Tucker gets even more relaxed. Great video.
When you explained tuckers quirks he looked at the camera like yea I do that.
"Beauty pageant wave! :D I am definitelly going to remember that! :D
I love horses but have been really wary after a horse that was being friendly bit my back. These help me get my confidence back 😊
Just started a job and they have 2 male horses. Thank you so much for this video, even after 2 years! Very good to know what to look out for! Thank you!
Actually loving the content here.
Any time I can learn something new.
I have wanted horses since I was a child.
I'm 56 and haven't had my chance.
There's so much to learn.
Just started working with horses and this was a really helpful video, keep up the good work.
I just got my first two horses. I used to ride all the time and love our four legged friends. I'm already recognizing some of the physical expressions in them both, just watching this. Perfect amount of information shared here.
This is so wholesome. Tucker is adorable. This made my day
Thank you for all your help.
Thank you.
i’ve been riding for a while but only doing lessons, i’m starting to volunteer at my local barn to help with my mental health and although i have been riding for a while i don’t know a whole lot about horses body language so i’m really making an effort to learn so i can better understand them
A horse at my barn is uhh... really weird... he smiles when wants a treat 👀
😭😭😭
Finally getting into lesson soon after around 7 years of waiting. Want to make sure I have at leastma bit of a better understanding of these animals for when I go. Thank you, very informative! ;D
This is a great video! People who are around horses need to know how to read them. It's very helpful not to mention interesting 👍
You are a great teacher!
This is literally the cutest video that you've made!! I love it!
I love how Tucker’s like “I love you, Mom.” “Ugh stop it, Mom, let me do what I want.” “I love you, Mom.”
i think one of my favourite things about this video is your impressions of horse noises :D
You're a natural on camera! Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing this with us!
And it’s also helpful thanks
I'm not interested in horses. Just love listening to Carmella 😊
What a talent, dear Lady Carmella Abel ! Your talent, Gift, can be summarized in one word : LOVE ❤
Does Tucker ever get agitated from being on display for the camera? He seems to have excellent temperament!
How do I help them relax when they r anxious or nervous? I notice that I got the hang of horse boy language I just do what I’m supposed to do to help
Thank you, I just got the horse speak course, really amazing, it helped me a lot.
This was very informative and eased some nerves since I'm beginning a Stablehand position soon. Thanks for the great video!
Great video! I don`t know if you are a teacher but you sure know how to convey a message to people 🙂
I've watched a few of your videos so far, and subscribed to the channel. You are a very good instructor! I'm currently taking English Saddle lessons and your videos have really helped me make good adjustments. I thank you, and if Millie could speak, I'm sure she'd thank you, too. :-)
thank you for being so informative without being belittling
Although you can stay safe around a horse, you can't always read silent communication because not everyone knows silent communication
Even if you know a little bit, get to know the basics
When my Pappy was living and we spent time on his horse farm, believe me, it was a BLAST!
We really didn't know much about language, but we knew enough to stay safe
We had a mixture of horses and ponies, and it didn't matter if you were kid or grownie, grownies could ALSO ride PONIES as well as HORSES
I was one of those leisure riders that didn't ride hard at all, and most times, I rode bareback, unless I was in a saddle for a short time, especially for a trail ride or a ride on the road near home
None of our horses or ponies had any trouble carrying us except for one that had trouble with her Withers and could collapse with you on her back, so we returned her to the Sugar Creek horse auction
We had joy and fun on that horse farm!
If she was angry her ears would be pinned back too
Do you mean rearing? I’m not sure.
She’s excited man. But pay more attention to her body language.
Hooves** I’m sorry that triggered me 😆
A horse normally only does that when there's no other way out of a situation (so they can't move back or going back doesn't bring them what they wanted so they go up).
I love horses I don't have a horse but I love them and I am a kid.
Wow this was super informative loved it....👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 And especially the bored horse walk you did there was the steal of the show!!!!
❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎
Absolutely love your videos and so impressed by how quickly your channel has grown! Fellow equestrian P24 member here just getting some inspiration 😊
0:10 Tucker has the cutest funniest facial expression, as you talk about him. LOL!
I’m getting a horse soon, and this video gives great tips! Thanks for the advice! I’ll be able to understand my horse better. 😊
I’ve always dreamt of buying my own horse so I’m learning as much as possible and I love your channel. Thank you xxx
Tucker is such a cutie. I’m so in love with his markings.
I was around horses for over 40 years & didn't know some of that! (well we didn't have the internet back then, haha! ;) ) Very interesting and informative, thank you 👍
Also wanna say, I so appreciate this channel and especially this young lady
Carmella,
Your video was informative, entertaining and genuine. I will be on a horse tomorrow morning after almost 4 years and feel more ready and confident thanks to your video! :)
you're so talented with reading horses, I wish you trained parents how to read their (our) kids! I know I could use some help especially with teenagers!
I’m getting a horse in a couple months and this channel has helped so much!!
My favorite channel to get help... New to owning a horse and I find this channel GREAT.
Thank you💞
Thanks for this video! I work with horses but don't ride myself (i work at a farm) and i want to read the horses better, this really helps!
I love your humor!!!! We laughed a bit watching your video. Thank you for the teachings. Kind regards from Romania.
Haha thank you!
I'm going to a new stables today cause I used to ho to lazy j ranch so this is a very good video for me
I'm not even sure how I got to your videos and I've never wanted to own a horse before but now after like 5 videos I I want one
I don't have a horse but i'm planing on getting one and watching this is part of me preparing
What a nice video that horse just loves you you can tell he trust you completely it’s so adorable. You can really tell you’ve earned his trust and that he feels so safe with you.❤️❤️❤️
This type of videos help me alot, because i want to own a horse in future :)
My paint mare has been showing her teeth more but her ears are very perked up. She seems to be very comfortable around my daughter, my daughter lays in the hay by her while she eats and the horse just eats around her. She also laid down and let my daughter pet her. Very informative, I’m learning quite a bit
been watching videos about horse behavior to prep for volunteering this summer. thanks for the info!
