    I'm not a spinner, but I am a maker. Just purchased the PDF , and will be making a few of these for my cousin and her friends. Thanks for doing all the legwork for me!

    Cleverest girl on UA-cam :) I like it when the fox winks :) the Ashford company has been ripping us for too long with those small mechanical wooden toys with which no-one can really make money, £17.00 for a wooden spindle & £1,075.00 for a 16 shaft 60cm table loom not even a Dobby system. Good girl it's time to DIY, educate ourselves & put these greedy companies out of business. They're living off on our inability to think out of the box.

    I bought this plan and built my own Thrifty Fox a couple of years ago. The supplies ended up costing a loooottttt more than this, but it was well worth the experience. I lost days and days spinning at this thing. I did not notice the passage of time. I'd look up, and 13 hours had past and it was time for me to go to work. This was one of the best things I've ever put together.

    I built this wheel a few months ago using your plans and it works great. It is way faster for me than spinning on a drop spindle, and the cost to build was less than $100. It's also a lot easier on my arms, since holding them up while spinning on a spindle was starting to get tiresome. There's no way I could afford a commercial wheel, so this is just perfect for me-- and after using this and seeing how great it works, spending the money on a commercial wheel seems like it would have been a bit of a waste of my money. It's simple, it's easy and it works. Thanks again for this.

      @@spacecadetnet1506 Owh I just saw Your reply, sorry I couldn't answer sooner. I don't know how old she is but if I had to guess 26? I am 34. I didn't mean my comment to sound sexual. It's about how calming her presence is. Don't make this sound like it's about anything else, cause it's not. I think You should change the way You view people, cause You seem to be too sensitive to guys giving compliments. I do understand where this sensitivity comes from, but I am not the kind of guy You assume I am.

      Sounds like you’re trying to hard to defend yourself dude. You need to change how you look at women almost 10 years younger than you.
      They ain’t here to gently hold your head and comfort you- who TF says that to some girl they don’t know in the internet?! CREEPY MEN on UA-cam that’s who. 🧟‍♂️

      @@spacecadetnet1506 Of course I am going to defend myself against people who try to sexualize every single compliment one makes towards a girl. You know who makes such compliments to a girl? Someone who isn't afraid of being honest and knows darn well that the person on the recieving end has every right to complain and tell him not to say such a thing. This didn't happen here. You don't even know how she recieved this compliment and I surely hope that she didn't twisted it into something like You did. You are just making assumptions through YOUR twisted view of this. My question is, since when did saying something nice become an issue that one needs watch so carefully what they say? Getting offended is way too common these days. To touch upon the age difference, which in all honesty is irrelevant here cause nothing I said was meant in a sexual manner, 10 years difference after a certain age means nothing. Grown up people are grown up people. Let it be 25 or 35. They can talk for themselves.

    • @valkhii

      @@spacecadetnet1506 As a side note, I am sorry if You are surrounded by actual creeps who are out for only one thing. However how impossible it might seem, not everyone is like that. You can have Your own opinion about this and find it creepy however. That is completely fine. But making assumptions of people too quickly, not only in this aspect but every other, is actually hindering You from "honesty" being present. Cause everyone is going to be way to afraid to say anything to You. I don't really know what else to say about this. I just feel sad that so many people get offended all the time and assumes the worst right away.

    I've been a Spinster since 1978 and even in 1978 you couldn't buy a new wheel for the approximate cost of this. It's very cute and I might build one to take outside. (I currentlyI use spindles for spinning whilst out).

    I think it needs to be made clear to folks that this is a Spindle Wheel. Spindle wheels do not have a flyer and bobbin. A pointed spike is used to both twist and accumulate the spun yarn. The yarn does not wind itself onto the spindle itself as does other wheels. I actually timed it and weighted the yarn and so far I can drop spindle faster than when I use the wheel. Personally, after making this wheel, I think it is ok and will be great for my students to fiddle around on and I'll keep working it to see if I can get faster on it. You do need a scroll or band saw (for small cuts for the whorls), table saw, drill press (if you want to get accurate) and a miter(chop) saw. I have a considerable amount of knowledge around a wood shop and the directions are thorough. There are front facing Spindle Wheels out there as well. If your just getting started, I think you'd be just as happy with a drop spindle, but that is just my opinion. If your really serious about making yarn, I'd get a Wheel with a flyer and bobbins.

    So does the $45~ estimate cover the $15 plans as well?

    • @kimberanne
      @kimberanne  10 років тому +4

      good question...the $45 is estimated cost for supplies only
      (could vary depending on how you get your supplies, what quality they are)
      I got about medium-high quality supplies, but I still have yet to see a commercial-wheel for close to that price ;)
      thanks!

    I can't stop watching this video! Great job! Could you tell me what the spindle is made of? Sharpened dowel rods? It seems like you could cheaply make an infinite number of spindles for CRAZY PLYING ACTION! Just a shoe-box away from a lazy kate for those things, too.. How does a spindle wheel handle art yarns and thin/thick shenanigans?

    • @kimberanne
      @kimberanne  9 років тому

      Thank you!
      Yup, the spindles are sharpened dowels. You're right, it's awesome because it is mega cheap to have a ton of spindles...and the plying oh yes the plying!! hehe
      I haven't personally made any art yarns on this wheel yet, but I imagine it would work just fine....I generally spin a very fine yarn, which I have never had trouble with on this wheel, but I have also done bulky which works just fine! I would say it's generally pretty versatile ;)

    • @juliannaheiby
      @juliannaheiby 9 років тому

      kimberanneq Well, I guess I'll just have to make one and try art yarns and report my findings. We're planning a ThriftyFox party once we can all get together with tools and wood and youthful exuberance! and get spinning. I'm the friend in the "maybe you've tried a friend's wheel and already gotten hooked" part. It's good to be an enabler. Also, my guild was really interested in your wheel. Let's see where this takes us!

    • @kimberanne
      @kimberanne  10 років тому +1

      Basically, you attach a leader piece of yarn to the pointed stick, then take the fluff from sheep or alpaca or whatevvvver, spin the big wheel using the treadle (pedal), which spins the pointed stick, which adds spin to the fluff and makes it into hold together as yarn :)
      It's pretty fun!....at least I think so heheh
