can you recommend a video or a channel or chat that has that method of routing and bracing the headstock so that I can view it?, I'm doing the exact same job on a Gibson SG as well
I heard somewhere that Gibson will offer a discount to anyone who will accept delivery of a new guitar with the headstock already broken. You can use the savings to take it to be repaired at a shop of your choice, and it will then be better than new. I think it's a great idea.
Had my headstock repaired last year for the first time on my Gibson Les Paul Gothic! I cried! it's a 2003 and never had a repair! My sister was at my place and hit the case and bang right on the floor with the guitar in it! At least it was a clean break. My Gibson guy did a great repair! Can't tell it even happened! it was 200 bucks well spent. But still seeing that break was a nightmare!
This reminds me to fix my taylor baby guitar, same issue. I know...Taylor sells replacement necks but it takes the fun out of restoring and repairing lol 😀🎸🔨
I always keep some teat pipettes for these accidents, but in the end I use a brush anyway. So you might have saved me time and money. The more I think about it, a brush for the glue. I certainly couldn’t fault any part of your repair. 👍😁👍
Play auth... no, I can't do it. The phrase brings back too many strong feelings. Well done Andy, you are getting better over time. How much value was lost in the selling, percentwise? I have a white Vintage SG (VS6VW), a bargain from a music shop where somebody had dropped it, resulting in a nasty crack at the neck joint. I had it repaired by my luthier, he used superglue to make sure it flowed everywhere and then tightened the crack with clamps. Any future buyer will of course bid low, so it's best to just keep it.
Nice job! I think with the clamping either using a caul, or I have seen repaired clamped by wrapping the joint with string extremely tightly? Makes sense. I'd personally use more clamps too, and also different clamps (mostly because I find those F clamps really annoying to use!). Glad to see it back and playing authentic though ;)
I just wonder if it is then a good idea to hang the les paul and sg guitars on a guitarstand instead of standing on the body?? I have those hercules stands that close when the guitar is hangong on the stand gives you a feeling of safety
“If you were to paint that over, you would not know that was there. Which is something to worry about when buying a 2nd hand Gibson.” I felt my eyes widen and palms beginning to sweat at this revelation. And I don’t even have a guitar with a painted neck...or a Gibson. Keep calm and play authentic.
Cool SG headstock repair. Thanks for showing this. It’s hard for me to say PLAY AUTHENTIC because my offset headstock is an Epiphone LP Classic (but it’s really nice).
Hard for you to say play, authentic? How? It's still an authentic LP. Whether Gibson or Epi, it's still authentic. It came from THE ONLY MANUFACTURER of Les Pauls on the entire planet. If you had a Chibson or a Harley Benton or any number of Les Paul clones, then your comment would make sense but as of now it doesn't. You own a Les Paul 🤣. It doesn't get anymore authentic than that unless you spend extra for a Gibson and then it's still not anymore authentic. It's just as real of an LP as your Epi. That's like saying you don't have a real Stratocaster because it's a Squier. And that ain't how it works. 🤔👎
@@JC-11111 Okay, I accept that perspective. I really like my Epi LP and I am very careful to prevent anything that might cause headstock damage. Interestingly enough I also have a Squier Classic Vibe 60s Strat I bought used and really like it. It’s hard for me to think of either of these guitars any less because they aren’t branded Gibson or Fender, but I wasn’t sure what the community at large thought.
There are so many headstock repairs on utube, and they are almost all on Gibsons. It makes me wonder if there are any Gibsons out there that haven't broken?!? It's so ridiculous because Gibson knows what they need to do to make their guitars more durable, but they stubbornly refuse to alter their 70 year old design.
Gibson really should redesign their cases. If the neck breaks it should be because the case was destroyed. I realize the neck design is more fragile, but the case should protect it during shipping and take any damage from rough handling.
@@TheGuitarGeek That’s part of it I’m sure. It’s lived in three different climate types with me, though it’s been in this current climate for over a decade. Nice repair! Looks fine and feels fine right? Ok, play authorized. If authentic is too expensive get an Epi. They're nice, they have SGs and they are "part of the Gibson family of companies" as they like to stamp on the neckplate (yeees, low cost epi SGs with bolt on necks, ewww). But mine both sound nice and are cheap and their headstocks never went boom. so.. play..authorized? (licensed?)
@@TheGuitarGeek the killer part is that they have done and sometimes still do this with some guitars. I suppose it really would be too out of character for Gibson, of all guitar manufacturers, to say, "We've realized our design flaw for the past century, apologize to anyone with a broken neck, and will henceforth be putting volutes on all Gibson and Epiphone guitars because " (here is the really non-Gibson part) "we value our customers who spend thousands of their hard-earned monetary units on a single Gibson expecting the best because that's what we always claim to be."

I love these on the bench videos. As a recent victim of a Gibson headstock break, this was therapeutic.
Hi Andy. I'd get a router and set up a jig to rout a couple of grooves for extra support splints. Makes the joint much stronger.
Thanks for the tip.
I was gonna say the same. Like stewmac or twoodfrw do.
Shouldn't need that at all, he did great !
Agreed. This repair does nothing to address the inherently weak junction where the neck and headstock meet. It will break again.....
