Pee-Wee Herman was played by James Brolin, Father of Josh Brolin, husband of Barbra Striesand.
You watched this on my 34th Birthday this year. One of my all time favorite movies ever no less. RIP Paul Reubens. A true comedic genius taken far too soon.
*The proper way to watch Pee Wee Herman is to just laugh out loud.* No questions necessary.
@MaryCherryOfficial He just died btw.
@@shack8110 He died btw.
As a kid I didn't realize how much of a cutie Dottie was.
Have you seen Valley Girl?
@@johnglue1744 I have not, will add it to the list.
I always found her annoying but to each his own.
Kinda the point lol. Peewee is straight up supposed to be us at age 10, and how we thought we'd be as adults. Not noticing the girls we should then either lol.
Oh, you mean Tommy Pickles?
Fun facts: The girl who plays Dottie, voices Tommy Pickles in the cartoon series Rugrats.
-Pee Wee used to open for Cheech & Chong. he was in two of their movies.
-Pee Wee's didn't start off as *kid friendly.* The original stage performance was aimed at an adult audience.
-Toho sued the studio, for the unlicensed use of their characters.
-The big guy who chases Pee Wee is former wrestler Silo Sam. He stood 7' 8" tall.
Oh... And the Alamo *does* have a basement!
*TWO* in fact!
They were used as gun stores during the Mexican-American wars.
Dont' forget about that biker chick is his real life best friend Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira
And the band who was making a music video at the movie studio was twisted Sister. The actress who played Simone also played the penguin’s mother along side Paul Rubens in Batman Returns
That's the Mexican-Texan war. Remember the Alamo.
Dangit, you beat me to the Godzilla fun fact.
The biker lady that tells the others in the bar should let her have him was Elvira, The Mistress of the Dark.
SpongeBob’s creator said that Pee Wee Herman was one of the main inspirations for his character. RIP Paul Reubens aka Pee Wee Herman. He made us laugh till the very end
I legit was not the only one who thought this
Pee Wee's Playhouse was a staple for many in the 80's... it was unique, to say the least. The Movie was perfectly timed, as the Mountain Bike craze was just taking off, and this Movie became an immediate Cult Classic.
This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. RIP Paul Reubens
For someone just watching this movie out of nowhere, it's a little hard to get in a way. It sort of expands on the character of Pee Wee's Playhouse.
The TV series was unique. Stars such as Laurence Fishburne and Jimmy Smits were regulars.
Yes Pee Wee Playhouse was a Saturday morning must see every Saturday
The movie gets weirder and more divorced from anything resembling reality the longer it runs but that (I suppose) is part of its charm. RIP Paul Reubens
It’s nice to see it wasn’t really an acrimonious divorce, though. The movie and reality just grew apart, but you can tell they’re still on pretty good terms.
It's a great combination of Pee Wee's reality and Tim Burton's reality.
The bathtub “fight” scene is still to me one of the funniest scenes in movie history.
"Oh my God he's lost the plot!"
Pee-Wee's nosedive into madness is so delightful. I love that he just starts hissing at people 🤣🤣🤣
RIP to Paul Reubens. He was a really fun part of my childhood. Look up some episodes of Pee-Wee's Playhouse for what is essentially an acid trip for kids 😅
I was a movie projectionist when this came out. I adored it and enjoyed running it time and time again. Never tired.
"Exhibit Q! A scale model of the entire mall!!" 😂
I'm 40 and I think I love this movie more now, than when I was a little kid.
RIP pw.
PeeWee was my childhood, I watched the TV show religiously. I can't believe he's gone and Dottie is in her sixties now. I've had a huge crush on her for decades.
You and me both, buddy. She's still hot for 61.
My favorite setup for a joke is when the crowd cheers after Pee Wee says the only thing he can remember is the Alamo. Probably wouldn't make much sense to an Aussie though.
i.e. It's a famous American 'saying': "REMEMBER THE ALAMO!"
Also loved the "stars at night, are big and bright....DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS" in that same way. Madcap silliness is important!
Did Mary just do the Pee-Wee bar dance along with him. Ok, that's awesome. Nerd level up +2 😂
Fun fact: the “music video” being filmed is a real band, Twisted Sister, performing their song “Burn in Hell.” They’re most famous for the songs “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock.”
I've been inside that dinosaur statue, and it is very small in the head area actually. The woman in the biker bar is Cassandra Peterson AKA Elvira, an old friend of Paul Reubens.
Those dinosaurs are located in Cabazon off the 10 freeway near Palm Springs
@@celsovera91 Yes, Indeed They Are !!
"Oh, a lady's driving it. I already feel like he's safer."
LOL
1. I am a loner, a rebel
2. Large Marge is the reason I'm a Truck Driver
3. PeeWee showed Michael Jackson how to dance. (GOOGLE IT)
4. The Actor who played PeeWee in his action packed movie IS Thanos real father.
5. Dottie Was my first crush and is still to this day.
Fun fact: 29:33 _
The actors in the drive in screen were James Brolin (Josh's Dad) and Morgan Fairchild ,both 80s legends.
AKA Mr Barbara Streisand
The actor who played Pee Wee in the "movie" at the drive in, is James Brolin, the father of Josh. He was famous for the tv shows he starred in. He is now married to Barbara Streisand.
i will always love pee wee, i grew up watching his show in the 80's. fun fact: it originally was an off broadway stage show, and was pretty raunchy. they watered it down for child consumption, which brings us to the pee wee of today. if you can find it, watch the stage show, its funny but pretty shocking, especially if you only know the show and the movies.
He even shows up in a Cheech and Chong movie
@MaryCherry Pee-Wee started off as an adult stand-up character (The Pee-wee Herman Show a.k.a The Pee-wee Herman Show Live At The Roxy) and eventually he was asked if he would be interested in doing kid friendly version which lead to Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. The series Pee-Wee's Playhouse and the second movie Big-top Pee-Wee. But The second movie wasn't a sequel. It was produced by Paramount Pictures in the hopes of turning it into a franchise.
E.G. Daily, who plays Dottie, has been in movies and TV shows. I best remember her being in the movies Valley Girl ( with Nicholas Cage ), Better Off Dead ( with John Cusack and she sings in it ), and Streets of Fire ( with Michael Pare and Dianne Lane ). She also has a song Mind Over Matter that reached #7 of US Billboard Top Ten Club/Dance Chart and was featured in the movie Summer School ( Mark Harmon and Kirstie Alley )
Oh wow, in terms of voice acting, she was also Buttercup from the Powerpuff Girls and Tommy from Rugrats!
@@crystalmanta9443most animated male characters are voiced by women. On the Simpsons, Bart is voiced by Nancy Cartwright
I always wanted to do the laugh but I'd always end up coughing 😂😂😂.
😂😂😂... thanks, I needed a laugh like that.
When she asked about the room, it reminded me of the time I was in a Paul Reubens fan group. I asked what Pee-Wee did for a living to be able to afford such a cool house, and *everyone* roasted me. Nobody understood what I was trying to ask. 😂😂
When you find out what he did for a living to afford that house please let me know no pun intended😂
I saw this in a theatre - our faces and stomachs hurt afterwards from so much laughing - an unforgettable experience
The pink dog in Big Adventure is Darla, who also played Buffalo Bill's dog Precious in Silence of the Lambs.
As much as I love Pee Wee, Paul Ruben's performance as the Spleen in Mystery Men is my personal favorite. That and him as the Animal Control guy in Dunston Checks In.
and the greatest death scene ever as Amilyn in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
He was hilarious in that episode of Reno 911,imo it's the best episode they ever did.
Ah, The Spleen. 'Pull my finger'.
He was pretty good in the movie Blow as well
The “Large Marge” scene is one of the most iconic in cinema
I have this movie on DVD and it's Tim Burton's first movie he directed, cool reaction as always Mary, you have a nice day sweetie 🥰❤️
RIP Paul Reubens AKA Pee Wee Herman 🙏
Fun fact: The kid with Pee Wee's bike was in Back to the Future, he was Marty McFly's Uncle Milton in 1955.
And played the brother on "The Wonder Years"
He's also a jerk in Tremors 🤣🤣🤣
I wonder if uncle jailbird joey ever got out?
@@LordVolkovNot the same kid.
@@movieatorfilms Oh dang. They look a lot alike I guess.
This movie was everything as a kid. Plus he had his own show, which was also just nuts. I honestly feel lucky to have been a kid during the Pee Wee Herman era ☺️
Great Reaction......
This movie came out during the middle of his TV show "Pee Wee's Playhouse"....
The Redheaded Biker Queen is his long-time Friend Casandra Peterson who is best known as "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark".......
The Band who's Music video Pee Wee interupts is "Twisted Sister"......
The Actors in his "movie" are James Brolin and Morgan Fairchild which were among the sexy actors/acresses at the time.....
Haha My younger brother (turning 9 at the time) wanted to see this for his birthday in theatres, so the rest of the family begrudgingly went thinking 'what kind of crap are we going to see?'....driving home after watching the film we all thought it was so stupid.....then we all started talking about ridiculous/stupid different parts of the film, and laughed at how ridiculous they were....by the time we got home, we all decided it was a hilarious film, and how much we surprisingly really liked it! Great childhood memory!
My favorite role of his is in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (The film.) That death scene is *chef's kiss* and he nailed the comic timing perfectly.
It's soo good! He has some really funny scenes with Luke Perry too. RIP to both.
That was around the time he got some negative publicity for indecent behavior in a theater.
Pee-Wee's playhouse should be everyone's childhood entertainment.
Once my daughter's partner had his bike stolen. Soon after, they saw the stolen bike listed on Craigslist so they set up an appointment to meet the person to "buy" the bike. (Without mentioning to the seller that it was stolen from them originally.) They met in a public place to confirm that it was indeed the stolen bike, the partner "test rode" the bike, and rode off stealing his own bike back. The seller / thief couldn't report the bike as stolen from him because it was not his in the first place and the original owner was the one who took it back!
"Whoever returns the bike is obviously the person who stole it, so they don't DESERVE any reward!"
That is awesome 😂
NPR did a story about a guy who's bike was stolen, and he creates "bait bikes" with GPS trackers in order to catch bike thieves. In one bike he removed the seat and placed a label with his name and address. He ran into the thief riding his bike, and the thief flagged down a police officer to arrest him for harassing the thief. He proved it was his bike by telling the police officer about the name tag in the tube the seat was attached to. He said a large number of bike thieves suffer from a mental illness.

It takes talent to make such whimsical nonsense so entertaining, and Tim Burton/Paul Reubens delivered ! The actor that played Peewee in the meta Drive-In version is James Brolin, father of Josh Brolin (aka Thanos). The actress who played Dottie in the drive-in version is Morgan Fairchild who was a very well known face on 80s tv, usually playing glamours characters. I think Austin Powers 3 is one of the other few movies that did a film within a film version of the same characters.
Morgan Fairchild has an amusing role as the mayor in Phantom of the Mall, and plays herself in Slammin Salmon.
Probably the first time I nearly busted a gut laughing was when Pee Wee goes sashaying out of that biker bar, only to bump into one a little and they all collapse into each other loudly, and he's so shattered and disbelieving that he makes this weird noise between a busted-up sob and suppressed laughter~
I was 17 years old and saw this at the drive-in when it came out completely baked out of my head. I still love this movie unequivocably.😂
One of my all time faves! I was 14 when it came out and it still cracks me up.
Jovial and upbeat are the two words that describe the joy that pee wee shows.
A childhood favorite of mine. Paul Reubens was a unique person, to say the least. My favorite role of his is in the film Blow starring Johnny Depp.
Paul Reubens was a national treasure and such a uniquely gifted comedian/entertainer - his Pee-we Herman is iconic and will live for generations. His collab w/Tim Burton really shines both their talents on full display and creativity. Phil Hartman who was a fellow Groundlings improv member (where Paul crated Pee-wee) co-wrote the screenplay and cameos as a reporter . James Brolin who plays Pee Wee in the film at the end is Josh's dad. And Billy says 'closed' not 'cursed' :D
I think she meant that part of the scene is “cursed” because Billy is a creepy ventriloquist dummy.
@@0okamino She heard cursed instead of closed.
When you inserted the clip of SpongeBob screaming “ write that down! Write that down!!!” I did a literal spit take. 🤣😜
Mary, the actress who played Simone was with Paul Reubens again as the Penguin’s parents in *Batman Returns* 🐧
Peewee started as a stand up comedy character for adults but Paul adjusted it for television as a kids show, which lead to the movie.
I first remember him appearing in Cheech and Chong movies in different roles.
I saw it in the theater in '85, then taped it off TV and watched it over and over again at home. I was pretty young so the Large Marge scene scared the crap out of me the first time. One thing I notice more now is that Paul's acting was really good. He takes Pee-wee through a huge range of emotions here convincingly.
I saw this as a kid when it came out. I’d forgotten how unique awesome and hilarious it was. Will be watching again soon. Glad you enjoyed
This movie is also Tim's first ever collaboration with composer Danny Elfman 😁
When Paul Reubens died the Alamo's official Twitter account said, "We're grateful for Paul Reubens' unforgettable contribution to pop culture. There is no basement in the Alamo Church, but there is one under our gift shop! Rest in peace."
On another note, this was the very first time I ever saw Twisted Sister. I think, since I was 9 at the time, I giggled at the word "Hell".
I love seeing people enjoy this movie as much as I do. It always cheers me up, have to watch it at least once a year!
I first caught this late one night. To this day, I still remember it fondly for how funny it was. The way it catches you off guard. The car going off the cliff, and kept on falling!… 🤣. This made me a fan of Tim Burton for Life! His his Unusual eye in which he sees and shapes his vision is truly unique! 😊👍
Mary, you totally get the appeal of Pee Wee. There is not a drop of cynicism in that film. It does an amazing job of making you feel like a kid again.
That's why that stupid controversy with Paul Reubens way back when was so devastating. The public reaction was so ridiculously cynical, which made a lot of people really sad. So it's nice to see Pee Wee making people happy again.
Yeah Pee Wee's playhouse was my jam.
I was really happy when he started appearing in movies again, then eventually got his second shot at peewee - it was well deserved
Love you Paul. Thanks for all the great childhood memories.
The biker mama Pee Wee meets at the bar is played by Cassandra Petersen, better known as her iconic character Elvira Mistress of the Dark.
*Pee Wee gets picked up by Large Marge*
Mary: I already feel like he’s safer
*Large Marge starts talking*
Mary: Uh-oh
I used to stop at The Wheel In: pretty cool place. Sadly, it was demolished around 2010. However, the dinosaurs are still there, and from what I understand, the T-Rex was painted to look like it was dressed like PeeWee, after he passed away.
And, of course, the music was composed by the great Danny Elfman, of Oingo Boingo fane.
This was one of my most favorite movies, when I was a kid. It's still a favorite today. I'm also a huge Elvira fan and she and Pee-Wee were best friends. When PW entered the magic shop, there was a picture of Elvira, on the wall, next to the door. She also played the redhead biker woman, in the biker bar. R.I.P. Paul Reubens
This movie is one of those movies where you can just feel so much love was put into it by EVERYONE involved
All time classic! Thanks Mary! Had this recorded on a vhs and watched countless times
15:57 will always be hilarious to me. The way he instantly starts screaming and it's half real animals and half taxidermy had me dead.
Pee Wee’s bike is one of the most iconic and coolest bicycles in cinema! RIP Paul 🙏🏻🙌🏻😢
Also crazy that this was Tim Burton’s directorial debut 🤯
Respect and rest in power Paul Reubens 🙏🙏🙏❤️
The actress that plays Dottie does the voice of Tommy Pickle in Rugrats. The dinosaur is still there in Cabazon California and when Paul passed they painted the dinosaur as Pee Wee Herman. The spoiled kid was also in the movie Back To The Future. He says what’s a rerun it’s brand new. He also played Wayne Arnold in the tv show The Wonder Years. Laurence Fishburne played cowboy Curtis in the Pee Wee Herman show
One of my favorite films. Paul did such a good job lol. Pee Wee's Playhouse was a popular show here in America. He did a second film called Big Top Pee Wee. I saw an old clip where he was on the Dating Game show back in 1979 and he was in character the whole time. "Why don't you take a picture, it will last longer." So many iconic moments and sayings in here, what a blast. Thanks for reacting to this classic film Mary. He also had a Broadway show aimed at adults too. RIP Paul Reubens, thanks for making our childhoods better. "Good morning, Pee Wee" "Good Morning Mr., Breakfast!" "I know you are, but what am I?" Large Marge has a cool witch laugh. He was also in Buffy The Vampire Slayer film (1992) with Kristy Swanson. Paul Reubens also voiced Max in the film Flight Of The Navigator (1986).
If you watch the bush-door open upward the first time we see Pee Wee's bike, on the left side you'll see a man standing there operating the door. You can just make him out. I found this out a few weeks ago and even though I've seen this movie at least 50 times I never noticed it before.
I just went back to that place in the video and saw a pant leg! Wow! Never noticed or knew and I've seen the movie as many times lol
If you recognize the actor who played Francis, actor Mark Holton, you probably saw him in a cameo in The Naked Gun as the man at The Baseball game saying "It's Enrico Polottzo" and a cameo in A League of their Own as adult Stillwell. Mark Holton did have a few Bigger roles in Teen Wolf (1984) and it's 1987 sequel Teen Wolf Too as well as the 1993 Horror/comedy Leprechaun.
That cur away to SpongeBob screaming "Write that down!" killed me! 😂😂😂
The first time I seen this movie, I was on LSD with many of old friends of mine and we laughed out loud through out the movie. I still laughed at it while watching it over again and again. Great reaction! Peace out 🤟
One of the most underrated Danny Elfman soundtracks out there..
This movie is perfect for 10 year olds, which is coincidentally how old I was when it fame out...
The score is brilliant. The first thing that goes through my head whenever I think of this movie is the score. It latches onto my brain and stays there for hours.
29:03 - I hadn't notice Phil Hartman (Rest in Peace) in the movie before. Makes sense, I know Hartman appeared on Pee-Wee's playhouse and he also co-wrote Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.
"Oh, who's that?!"
Dottie is played by the lovely and talented Elizabeth (E.G) Daily. She sings and does voice-over (Rugrats).
For more movies with her - the original Valley Girl, Rob Zombie's 31, and she has a cameo (and sings) in Better Off Dead.
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is perfect. I first saw it in the 80's when we rented it (on VHS no less). I've loved it ever since. In retrospect, it's kind of a miracle it works so well. I guess Tim Burton was just the absolute perfect director for this material. There was actually a sequel called "Big Top Pee-Wee," and while it's not horrible, it doesn't ever fully click, proving what lighting-in-a-bottle "Big Adventure" was.
Watched this movie nonstop as a kid. Had it taped from TV on a VHS. Also should out to Danny Elfman's music in this movie. Tim Burton, Danny Elfman and Phil Hartman were all hungry young talents and they made a great movie.
22:36 the tough lady in the biker bar is Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. She and Paul Reubens met at the famous Groundlings Theater in Los Angeles in the 1970s and had been close friends until his death. Imagine if Pee-Wee and Elvira made a movie together. One of life's biggest what-ifs.
At the very least, Pee-wee was supposed to appear on _Movie Macabre_
It fell through, alas. But John Paragon at least had a regular role on that show as a crank caller.
One of my favorite childhood movies! This actually was my first Tim Burton film. Beetlejuice being my second along w/ Batman'89 and Batman Returns! Great Reaction, Mary!
Mary confessing to makin out during Baby Driver. Lol. Movie version Pee Wee was played by James Brolin, Josh "Thanos" Brolin's dad.
Mary trying to make sense of a Pee Wee Herman movie is too surreal!!
In his TV show "PeeWee's Playhouse," the cast included actor Laurence Fishburne and Phil Hartman , along with other well-known actors.
The late great Jan Hooks playing the Alamo tour guide. She was a great comedian who died too young.
so happy to see younger gen getting to watch Pee Wee in his first hollywood movie and the first movie directing of Tim Burton. I was only 3 when this movie was released but i finally saw it when i was 5 with my older sister and our older cousins one summer break and learned it all the scenes word for word 😂
Pee Wee aka Paul Rubens was an original character he created in his comedy career
rip 🤍
Lmfao!!!! Your edits and other movie references are the best!!! 😂😂😂
6:05 "I really wish I was this happy as an adult" followed by 14:53 " I don't know what to say, that was so weird!"
I think that's the best explanation for Pee Wee's success I've heard.
Paul Reubens and Tim Burton had a hobby in common, they both collected vintage toys, the toys in Pee-wee's house and throughout the movie are in equal parts from Paul and Tim's collections.
Great reaction! Be sure to see 'THE PEE-WEE HERMAN SHOW' & 'PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE' & HIS GUEST APPEARANCES ON TV TALK SHOWS! 😅
There's one Pee Wee Herman appearance that few people seem to remember.
He sings Surfin Bird ("the bird is the word") in Back to the Beach with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. It was a callback and spoof of their "Beach" movies of the 60s.
Nowadays that song is probably better known for Peter's version on the Family Guy.
Thanks for showing the Twisted Sister video 👍 most reviewsers leave it out 😢
This was Tim Burton’s first feature film after he was fired from Disney. Paul Reubens and an executive from Warner Bros. named Bonnie Lee saw Burton’s short films Vincent and Frankenweenie and decided that he should direct Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. The film’s success gave Burton the job to direct Batman.
The late Paul Reubens not only brought to life the beloved character Pee Wee Herman but he was also a very good singer as well!
First saw his pee wee character on an HBO special, had some adult jokes in it but only an adult would get it so I would say it is
kid friendly. Paul when you ask anyone he has met or worked with was very well liked, look up Conan Obrien about him. This is
an absolute classic and my friends and I quoted it many times.
I LOVE the format and editing of all of the little added clips are a blast. Thank you for your hard work and I can’t wait to watch the rest of your content.
Big top peewee is really good and the third one is the best
Excellent reaction! Glad you enjoyed it! This was one of the very first movies I ever saw as a kid in the 80s and it really shaped my sense of humor.
I used to hang out at that open air mall in Burbank where Pee Wee's bike was stolen as a teenager back in the seventies and that Wheel Inn Diner with the Dinosaurs are is on Hwy 10 close to Palm Springs, California and I have eaten there years ago
Used to get very stoned in college with friends and watch Pee Wee's Playhouse. Everything in his house was alive . . . So weird & wonderful.
Loved it as a teen, still do RIP Paul Reuben, thank you for sharing 😊👍✌️🇺🇸
Prior to Paul's passing, I would have loved to see him as Pee Wee do a movie with Jim Parsons as Pee Wee's cousin.
It was a very early movie for Tim Burton to direct. Paul Reubens said in a public appearance years later that they had someone else in mind to direct. He saw Tim’s unique visual style and wanted him. He characterized the reaction from the others involved as not understanding why visual style would be so important for a comedy film.
Danny Elfman did the music for this and would continue to do other Burton movies.
This Pee Wee character was someone he developed in the Groundlings improvisational group. He created an HBO tv special for the character which was a parody/satire of children’s shows, but with adult innuendo. This carried over into his tv series, Pee Wee’s Playhouse.
Paul Ruebens and Diane Salinger (who played Simone) reappear in the beginning of Batman Returns (also directed by Tim Burton) as Penguin’s parents
