    Jim in on1 you could have selected the sky and worked on that then copy and past sky and then invert to work on the foreground. To me this is more logistical

    • @JimNix

      Hi Martin and yes I can do that in Neo too. However, in either app, I would start with Develop (Develop Raw in Neo) which does not have masking, and that is where most of my impact happens for this shot. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Jim, I've been following you since the early versions of Luminar, this video was a great refresher. Another approach could be to address the sky separately using a sky mask. Thanks

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому

      Hi Dan and thanks for watching. I skipped using the sky masking here bc I was working with a raw file and Develop Raw does not allow masking, and that was where most of the work came into play. Thanks!

      @@JimNix I didn't know that! I thought it was always available. Perhaps it's because I mostly use Neo as a plugin, so the TIF is not considered a RAW file anymore?

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому

      @@Centauri27 yes exactly, TIF is not raw and coming from LR or somewhere else is generally a TIF although you can select to send the original raw file from LR if I remember correctly. But most folks do some basic stuff in LR first so that would not come with it if you sent a raw. Thanks.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому +2

      Hi Lysander, good question and thanks for watching. There is no masking in Develop Raw, and I was working with a raw file. For certain edits I would use the sky mask tool but in this case I used Develop RAW to get it under control and the rest of the edits were across the entire photo. I didn't need to isolate the sky after doing my Develop Raw moves. Thanks.

    Jim, as usual, many thanks for talking us through your workflow. One thing I would say is that the sky was not blown out. You just had a base exposure that was grabbed at an optimal ETTR exposure. Your histogram doesn’t appear to have any blown out characteristics. IMHO ;-)

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому

      Yes fair point, and perhaps the wording "over exposed" would be better here. The main point is how to recover what appears to be a blown out sky. Thanks for watching and for the feedback!

      @garrygeorge2811 Рік тому +1

      Jim I guess the point I was making is that RAW images are never ‘blown out’, unless they are. All you can say is they are not processed correctly in post ;-)

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому +1

      Thanks much Carl and since I was using a raw file, I used Develop Raw which does not have masking, so no Mask AI then. But that lets me get at that rich raw data which had a huge impact on the final image. Thanks for watching as usual!

  • @richbottarini86
    @richbottarini86 Рік тому +1

    Well done. However, why did you not use the masking tool to isolate the edits? Hint: the tool is not very well defined and needs additional masking around the edges. Unfortunately for Neo, Lightroom does a far better job. I wish Skylum would consider improving the base product and not give us more extensions.

    Hi Jim, thanks for another very useful vid. I've been meaning to ask for a while, why do you use multiple instances of a tool to undo something done in an earlier one, e.g. (not necessarily exactly what happened in this edit) Reducing the highlights in instance #1, and then increasing it a bit in instance #2 - why not go back and adjust the previous edit?

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому

      Hi Brendan and thanks. Yes, I do reverse some steps later in my edits, and it is for two reasons. The first is that I edit by feel, so my process is a bit fluid and sometimes a move I make later impacts other things so I have to fix them. But the second is a bigger reason, and it is that I like to move forward, not backward, so to speak. Meaning that I usually like my edit after each step and do not like to move things that would impact it. So I use a tool again to see how it works, without impacting my current edit, and if I do not like it I can just remove the latest instance of the tool, instead of having to recall what settings I had on the first instance of it. Hope that makes sense and thanks.

    Hi Jim. I had this issue with a picture of a Grizzly Bear with blown out (over exposed) highlights on the bear. Being relatively new to editing, I was having trouble fixing the photo until I just figured I would run it through HDR merge. What an improvement but I think the structure takes a hit. I would like to see you run the photo in this video through HDR merge and then edit it from there. Or would you even consider this approach? Really enjoy your channel.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому

      Thanks much James and yes I am a big fan of running single exposures through HDR Merge in Luminar Neo. I do it quite often, and as you indicate, the results can be excellent. In this case, I just wanted to address how I would do it using the standard tools in Neo. I have not tried it with this image but I suspect it would help tame that sky a bit, as HDR Merge is quite good at getting the light to balance. Thanks for watching.

    Jim to you and your followers--Lumimar Neo is taking a long time to export files. One file may take up to a minute to export as a jpeg. Trying to export multiple files can take hours, but usually, no files are exported. Lightroom does not have that problem.
