Driver's View Craigieburn Line & Essendon Crossing Removal - Melbourne

- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- 36 Minutes. At this time, only 2 level crossings are planned for removal on this line. Essendon has been completed and is included here. Glenroy is still officially 'In Planning'
I grew up in Broady and I still remember when the end of the line was Broadmeadows. A lot of people wouldn't realise that heading towards the city the line gently slopes downwards. One year, a driver at Broady hadn't secured the train and it rolled away all the way down to around Kensington!
Thanks for the video, you've brought back so many memories of catching the train to school in the city.
That runaway was much worse than that. The driver mucked something up changing ends and when he got out of the cab, the brakes were released, then he watched his train slowly rolling away out of reach. I guess he alerted authorities who knew it was coming and it was decided that the only way to stop it without the risk of it derailing on the Flinders Street viaduct curves was to direct it into a V line train standing at a Spencer Street station platform. It hit that train with quite a force but they had enough time to get everybody off it.
@@tressteleg1 11 people on the V/Line were injured
Yes, very lucky the whole thing was not any worse when the runaway was sent onto the platform at Spencer St with a waiting VLine train.
I’m up to the 23 minute mark in this video, and it seems that this train never gets out of second gear (metaphorically speaking)!
Love your videos, my goal is to watch them all. I grew up in Melbourne, and left in 1974, these take me back.
While most parts of Melbourne are not known for fast speeds, unfortunately in places the train driver had his camera set with a bit too much telephoto which makes the speed look much slower than it is. Nevertheless I am grateful for anything he supplies.
Excellent clip enjoyed the standard gauge interplay with normal track work. Very good all round 🚂🚂🚂👍
Michael Naisbitt 😊👍
Great stuff.. Hope everyone's doing well!
😊
You too. Great to see the Craigieburn line. Glenroy Road (Glenroy) crossing should be gone by end of 2022, according to levelcrossings.vic.gov.au. At this point the rail will go under the road.
Bobzicle_ Gaming I just saw that it was in planning. I don’t doubt that 2022 is the planned completion date. For the video I just had to know which crossings were to go. Wait and see.
@@tressteleg1 Fair enough. I travel along that area. They are doing ground work at the moment. If anyone else lives in the area feel free to take the survey on the level crossing removal website.
Bobzicle_ Gaming Years ago I lived at Glenroy but not near the station. I heard that the trains will go over the road, I think, like Essendon. I’ll rely on you and others to hear of progress. Hopefully my driver will get views from time to time as the work progresses.
it is obvious by the requests and demands for more, that your high quality videos are very much appreciated. a true compliment. we don't care about troll haters.
All good thanks 😊
another fun video. by the way, my dad helped build harry (2:31), probably the most powerful loco (horsepower) in the country for 50 years.
Very interesting! Thanks
Why does it look as though the train is only doing about 30kph even though the sound of the motors tells a different story? Is it something to do with the type of camera lens? Just wondering. Cheers.
Cameras sometimes give a false impression of speed. Not much I can do about that but you can be sure the train was running at Normal Speed for that section of track except when a reduced speed was signposted.
Thanks for the reply. I hope it informs others that may have been wondering the same thing. Cheers.
😊
Great Video

Awesome Video Mate.
😊
tressteleg1 all good 👍 I'm asking you what video you filming next Just saying?
Probably Wattle Park Tram. No idea after that.
@@tressteleg1 Ok all good.
Very good video!!

Hallo, warum ist die Fahrt so langsam ? Min. 9:50 gerade Strecke und sehr langsam. Welchen Grund gibt es ? Danke.
Hi tressteleg if i was aloud i will answer the question of my german friend.
Thanks for helping out Peter. My German is not strong enough to understand all your reply but it is not just technology that makes the trains slow. Firstly, Melbourne has never been a fast railway and only a few outer lines have some fast running. Nearly all our railways have the problem of slow running as an attempt to keep trains from running late so that the politicians can say that 98% of the trains are on time. But with the poor running in Melbourne, even with generous times too many trains still run late. Maybe some drivers don’t care if they run late also. Could you please translate this for the person who asked the question.
@@tressteleg1 Yes i will.
😊👍
Hallo Baercheng.
great video liked :)
😊👍
Funny that if they'd only built Pascoe Vale station ~50 metres south it wouldn't have a curved platform.
We will never know why some old decisions were made.
Can you post videos of V/Line services? Would be awesome to see all the lovely heritage stations like Ballarat
I don’t know any VLine or other drivers.
tressteleg1 hi mate, have you seen the channel called House Train? There are V/Line trips and sidings videos on that, as well as training videos that I think You might perhaps enjoy? Just a heads up. I hope You're well. All the best.
tressteleg1 Also John Phillips has posted drivers view videos of the old St Kilda and Port Melbourne train lines in the weeks before their conversions to light rail. It's an interesting look back in time.
irbs18 Yes I have watched one of House Train’s VLine Videos. Also I have been in contact with John Phillips for some years. Tomorrow I should be receiving some of his original super eight rolls of film to put through my digital conversion machine which I expect will give much sharper vision for him to then put on UA-cam. Wait and see
same good as always.
😊👍
I finally just saw a 100 sign.
Craig Simpson Melbourne does not display the normal maximum speed. Drivers are required to learn that. All speed boards are a reduction below the normal speed, usually because of curves in the track or junctions
4:00 what's happening to platform 1???
Awesome video btw
No much. A friend who lives nearby says it is now mostly used by Steamrail specials. In the past, some trains would have normally terminated there. Not any more.
@@tressteleg1 well why don't they just extend the platform???
Why? It simply is no longer needed.
I think I read that once the Metro Tunnel opens and there is spare capacity in the Loop, trains may originate/terminate at Essendon, due to extra platform. Sort of a short working like Westall trains.
Adam Murphy we will have to wait and see.
Essendon Station - Visit us for a free sample of AOD9604 ! jks but in seriousness was the essendon station a dangerous crossing? as it looks like another one where pedestrians and road drivers simply needed to use common sense, plus a track replacement
Generally it has little to do with safety and limited benefit to the trains. It is all about helping road traffic.
The removal of the level crossing at Buckley Street was long overdure. The boom gates would be down for most of peak hour due to the multiple V/Line trsins using the same train line.
I took this train line to high school and university every day.
😊
When you do videos of Lilydale line please Alamein line Hurstbridge line Mernda line upfield line Werribee Line & Williamstown lune please
I have nothing on Lilydale or Williamstown but have asked. You will find the others in my Playlist.
I would give anything anything to see a S Class Loco Streamlined. Lowering it under would of caused a shit storm over the Heritage Station Buildings...
Many millions of $$$. They were all scrapped before there was any museum movement.
@@tressteleg1 I realized that.... it's what brought steamrail and ARHS into existence after an outcry by the public...
Show the cab
Very difficult to get the scenes.
10/10
😊👍
Thanks as always. One thumbs down already? Have you got a serial hater here or something?
Yep. There is some gutless brain dead moron which dislikes every one of my videos within minutes of publishing. I bet it is too stupid to make any videos itself.
tressteleg1 he must really hate trains for some reason. 😆. As they say - you haven’t made it on UA-cam until you have a troll. 👍
I suspect that this person thinks he is some sort of hero posting dislikes that he knows cannot be traced. I doubt he (or she) realises that most people just see them as a useless fool. You are not the first person to raise this subject.
I clicked like just because of this. I love your videos but clearly need to 'like' them more often. BTW, love this one - finally got my commute, although I come VLine down this line on the Seymour service.
Kevin Francis. The more Likes the better but I see a few more have joined in with the moron. Maybe you can chat up a VLine driver for some raw video of those lines. I can then process it.
I can see why Metro have slapped speed restrictions...
Yeah, crappy track.
@@tressteleg1 Dammit those mud holes. Sunshine Station had a shocker mud hole until they fixed it
Maintenance seems not to be a high priority in Melbourne. I don’t know if it is Metro or the government to blame.
I saw your other comment as an email, but could not reply to it this way. It said Comment could not be found!!
Anyway I looked up Home Train and watched his video from Rockbank to Sunshine. Nicely done. He needs to be very discreet. Rail safety act says that electronic devices must not be in the cab. I think they had telephones in mind but technically this would also apply to video cameras. Any time that the driver’s voice can be heard or a traceable loudspeaker announcement from Metroll, I remove all that and substitute sound from some other part of the journey. Sometimes I manage it so well that you cannot hear the change. Anyway it’s good that somebody is doing the VLine lines and I will mention that to anybody who asks for those. Thanks.
I've got information about that. Let's say that you are about to arrive Broadmeadows on Platform 2, and just before the bridge (Camp Rd if you're familiar), there's a light. Just before that light, there's a sign. That sign said 30km/h late last year. Earlier this year, they changed it to 50km/h. I mean it's a good thing. A great thing, in fact. But yeah, the speed restrictions are annoying. Very annoying.
Bobzicle_ Gaming From these videos there seems to be temporary speed limits at least once on nearly every line. I don’t ride Brisbane or Sydney trains often enough but suspect that they have many fewer limits like that. And certainly I don’t remember any at any time at least on the fast of section of my Gold Coast line.
