Never being allowed to express my opinion when I was hurt or worried about something was me and my sisters. I married a person who benefited from this childhood trauma. I never said no, dealt with behavior that I realize today wasn’t nice. Did what he wanted me to do. He had it good. Well honey that’s over!! I am not going to do anything I don’t want to do. I have been detached from me, people around me and worse of all God. I have made some serious mistakes because of it. My eyes have been opened. Dear Africa, I can so relate. Expressing my needs was always associated with punishment experiencing childhood abuse by a narcissistic parent. The fear of punishment is so deeply engrained in me as an adult. No matter how I try I am so afraid of getting punished and restricting myself constantly (logically it is nonsense and yet....).
I am 1000% right there with you. It's negatively affected me throughout my adult life and affected decisions I've made, big and small and the fear is constant company. 😔 I feel for you. Hopefully we can overcome it.
I was born to German parents that were raised during the second world war. They were soldiers and raised us to be soldiers. Stand straight, dont speak, do as you are told without question, and women arent worth anything except as breeders and cleaners. Abuse on all levels except sexual. I was always being strapped for speaking up. I still speak up but was raised to expect abuse. I married abuse. I finally found me and got out. Not many men are raised to be self reliant and speaking the truth. I dont expect to find a good partner as I dont need a man. They want to be needed. They want to have the last word, but if it isnt a good last word i dont obey, i do the responsible adult action.
Yesssss my childhood 100%. Now I’m much older and I’m not taking crap from no one! I realized how it’s better for ME when I call people out on what they are doing. It’s a real shocker but I do NOT care. I have a peace of mind in the end.
Direct, authentic speech is VERY SATISFYING. Women get so little true satisfaction. This one is worth it and a gift that keeps on giving...DIRECT SPEECH.

I betray myself by making other people more important than me. Thank you 🙏 I needed this. My Caucasian mother in law is very resistant with my Latin culture. I finally stood up for myself with poise by telling her my father is from Mexico and about my beautiful ancestors ❤ 🇲🇽 🇪🇸 Micro-moments and getting used to being quick on my feet. Very realistic and I will implement into my daily life ✨ thank you Lisa and Africa.
I've told the waiter "There's a bit too much peanuts". The issue is the reaction 😅. I also said it in another restaurant with friends and they definitely judged me for being honest. Disclaimer I've worked in many industries and I was happy when people felt okay to give honest feedback. The hardest people to be brave towards are family members I'm battling this because this person will definitely misunderstand me. This is such good advice❤I want to give this a go in 2025.

I have always hated that, men looking at other women, up and down with their eyes, right in front of me. I didn’t like it either, if a man in a couple, was looking at me that way. It’s so disrespectful to the woman he is with and as well it’s disrespectful to the woman in his gaze.
Yes, it's disgusting. In high school, I slapped an ex for that. Not only did he ogle at her, he openly commented on her body parts. I wouldn't do it again but I don't regret it either.
This was such a powerful conversation. I really enjoyed how Africa spoke so clearly and concisely on this uncomfortable but much needed dialogue. I'm currently working through finding my own voice and owning it. Ive had decades of rejection that I'm still working through. I do feel that the shame and guilt we all feel is universal and the goal is to shed light unto the darkness we hide from ourselves and others.
The interview has been so resonating, in particular with the context of growing up in domestically violent home and discovering things about myself during healing journey.
I've always spoken out for myself but, it's only gotten me into trouble. From childhood with stepmoms, I always had to fight my way out of being dumped on. This has followed me into adulthood and in relationships. As an adult, I vehemently refuse to be taken advantage of from those who feel I don't deserve to be respected for the person I am. Just broke up with my partner of 2 years because he felt he wasn't accountable for his bad deeds.
The word I often use when handling with self-betrayal is 'accountability'. It gets you into the mind frame of recreating a new vision- whilst acknowledging that I had a massive part to play in my downfall- now it's time to recreate!
Self betrayal and self sabotage is something that we do indeed need to be aware of! Thanks for sharing! Self improvement in all areas of our lives is imperative!
Speaking up has its consequences though… I’ve spoken up for myself and been retaliated for it… especially at work. It’s a very difficult situation where you have to pick and choose battles when to say something and when to keep your mouth shut….
Yes, I went thru hell after it but it's better than the alternative. The longer you wait that fear will eat you alive and get worse. Confidence and greatness comes surviving these trials.
I know exactly what you're talking about. It happened to me a year ago and I went through the darkest period of my life. What I learn is not to stop standing up for myself and speaking up and ignore the ignorance and stupidity of those who are the cause of the problem
Sadly it can come from parents, often mothers with unhealed wounds, who snuff out their daughter's voice because they already had their's snuffed out by their mother too. "Be nice!" "Don't say no to someone as you need to be there for people."
Amazing video A month ago, my partnership of five years came to an end. The choice to break up with the person I love is something that really gets to me. Even though it's all for nothing, I've done everything I can to get him back, and I couldn't imagine my existence without him. I've tried everything to stop thinking about him, but I still can't help but miss him and think about him often. I don't know why I am saying this here.
Saying goodbye to someone you love is difficult; I know this from my 12-year relationship ending. But I was unable to simply let him go, so I made every effort to get him back. I eventually sought aid from a spiritual counselor, who was able to help me regain his affection.

The Fear of "she's not gonna like me" And if that person already has "something" with me .. the voice inside says "she's gonna hate me even more" I have to please her I have to act like a small child, innocent, harmless, just so I dun trigger so and so .. And if someone likes me? N we r going deeper into our rls, friendship I feel like I HAVE TO maintain a certain way of being or behaving .. Otherwise, it's gonna get Too Much for them N eventually, they can't take it & will leave me.
In dysfunctional relationships there Is a very good reason to believe you will be abandoned. You probably will be. In the long run, it will be beneficial. weeding off the chaff.
