When we removed all the ICE bits from our electric 928 project our weight came right down to 910 kg (from 1500). So I'm sure you can find a bit quite a bit more, Richard. Some other comments:
    - we decided to sacrifice the back seats, which are almost as useless as those in a 911. Nobody is ever going to ride there and certainly not if you're gunning for 200mph. That gave extra space for all the electronics I nicked from my donor EV, and also the 12V battery, fuse boxes, etc.
    - so we'll need to do a bit of trimming to enclose our rear luggage/EV motor area. We're no longer a 2+2, just a 2-seater.
    - we are only using 18 CALB cells in series, as opposed to your 32 in series/parallel. All ours are going in the front, but you will need to spread them front and rear to get weight balance right. Luckily you'll have plenty of space back there where the fuel tank, auto trans went. Unfortunately the tunnel is too narrow to accommodate CALB batteries, but I expect two battery boxes for you. Large one front, smaller rear.
    - unlike your project, we're not building a 200mph hypercar. We have a national limit of 110km/h and I just want a brisk daily driver. Consequently I expect your weight will be around 1700kg. Ours will hopefully be around 1350-1380kg, lighter than any petrol 928! Which is a surprise to many of the petrol-heads objecting to my project.
    - As someone who has owned 6 x 928S, and currently own 4, I would suggest you aim for a weight balance around 45 front/55 rear, not the original 50/50. You will find this leads to a better balanced vehicle. You don't want a car that is nose-heavy.
    - we retained the Porsche instrument binnacle, which is a classic and trademark feature of the 928. But I added a screen to the centre console.
    - most 928s came with a sunroof - the smallest and most useless sunroof ever. And heavy. They leak, they don't work well, barely wide enough to get your fist through, you can save some weight by ditching it and filling the panel. Even the roof panel behind the vinyl/leather panel above you head is made of galvanised steel. I don't know what Porsche were thinking when they went to such trouble to save weight with Aluminium panels and suspension arms, etc. Consider ditching the sunroof. You'll never use it.
    - how dare you describe that dash as acres of plastic. Fi on you, sir! Some were quality vinyl but many were the finest leather Porsche could offer in its day. Sadly the Australian sun takes a terrible toll on it and it's rare to find one that isn't cracked and warped. In the UK your dashes often look OK, but the body / undersides are ravaged by rust from your soggy salty roads. We rarely find chronic rust in 928s in Australia unless the cars were imported from the UK. As many were.
    - and you're right about the seats. From memory I think they're about 25kg each. So lightweight seats will save you a bit. A shame though - the 928 seats are more comfy than they look and fabulous for long trips.
    - Also, as we're using so many bits from our donor EV, we will have niceties like reversing camera, DAB audio, Eco/Normal/Sports modes, driver-selectable regen (KERS), and possibly some of the radar based systems if I can be bothered. Pretty amazing in a 40 year old Porsche.
ECC viewers are of course invited to watch our progress with our Porsche 928 EV on the inCARnation Australia channel. EVs rule!
🏁 👍Hope this helps👍and all the best from the 928 EV8 in Sydney.

Thanks for the tips. We’re already quite far along with the other 928 so are going to copy the basic template we used on that one. We need a battery pack that is not only 80kWh but can maintain 1200amps for 10 seconds so we’re still looking at a couple of options on that.

First thing I thought when I saw those back seats was that nobody will ever use them so more room for batteries. It will be fun to compare your two projects. I get the sense that EV’s are going to take off in Australia with no domestic market to protect and so many choices.

Always loved the 928, when I was 14 in 1982 I wrote to Porsche in Germany and asked for a brochure for the 928 and they sent me one, I remember how exciting that was at the time. Can't wait to see how this turns out!

Long ago when you converted a 944 (i have owned one as a daily driver) I was hoping you were going to convert a 928 S4 in the future. Thats because I always wanted to own and drive a 928 S4 but the V8 maintenance cost of ownership prohibited that purchase. So I am really looking forward watching you go crazy on your donated 928 S4. A dream come true for me. (Too bad that the steering wheel is on the wrong side ;)

Down under, we're 34 episodes into our Porsche 928 EV conversion. About a year ago I recognised the 928 was the perfect classic for conversion for many reasons that I'm sure many viewers will agree, Richard. Viewers are invited to follow the progress of our novel approach / budget build 928 EV8 (c). First episode is here ... ua-cam.com/video/vbEqtlWsHFk/v-deo.html
But good for you Richard, I'm sure you'll do it properly. Who will get their car registered and on the road first. Probably you but the race is on.
Our donor car is a 1983 928S, but somebody at some stage fitted a S4 body kit. Our car won't be a rocketship as I'm transplanting everything from a MG ZS EV into it. Motor in the back, batteries front. The intention is a daily driver for suburban use - it's so rare to see the beautiful 928 shape on the roads today let alone on a daily basis. I intend to change that.

I’m keen to see how this goes - and the other 928 project. I daily drove a 928GT for 14 years and owned it for another two before transferring it to its next custodian. Fantastic cars. What I’d really like to see is you do one with just slightly better performance than original but great range and AC.
@IncCARnationAustralia is a mate and his 928 project is actually walking distance from my home. Stu is going down a different path to you but should end up with a nice EV.
The alloy guards, bonnet and doors really cut a lot of weight in the 928 and it would be a shame to lose the really comfy, if heavy electric seats.

I remember a lot was made, at the time, of the 928 not having bumpers - The squishy body being the bumper with special paint(?) that didn't flake off when the body/bumper was 'dented' and then returned to its original form.

I've been toying with the idea of converting a 928 for a while now and even mentioned it to you at the Farnborough show a few years ago. Also been chatting to Stu in Australia, but although it's great to watch his progress, massaging an MG drivetrain into the 928 is not the route I'd take, but a Tesla motor has always been a possibility.
Getting the motor mounted would be the greatest challenge for me, but if some sort of mounting kit was available, it would make using a Tesla motor very attractive and then I can do the rest myself.

Cool project. Maybe don't go too overboard on the sound deadening removal. Some of it will be just to quieten any road noise. I'd remove the rear seats though.

We’ve removed the sound deadening in the engine bay but left it all in the cabin. 👍

You missed the opportunity to slide into the workshop with bob sever playing old time rock n roll just like in Risky business, as that is where I first remember seeing a Porsche 928. Maybe you can save it for the finale 😂

are you going to tweak the aero with some CFD?
the car likely got light at 170mph, and the increase in drag up to & past 200mph will be formidable.
a splitter to keep the nose down, smoothed undertray and diffuser to decrease pressure drag
    - something to keep you planted and alive.

I’m sure some aero tweaks will be required. 👍😀

We’re thinking a flat floor and inch or two lower will help. 👍

    • @FPBIV
      @FPBIV День тому

@@ElectricClassicCars that's the perfect starting point. lowering is well accepted with classics.
and lowering is convenient to lowering frontal area drag for more speed with the same power,
and roll & pitch moment for handling & stability.
then a flat floor is a stealth modification invisible to classics critics with lowered surface drag - less dirty.
the transition from flat bottom to the existing rear form seems like where the service you used for aero for the Bug Zappa would help find the shape that takes you furthest forward from 170mph with stability.
as the Bug Zappa aimed for Pikes Peak with big aero, the sleek 92AteSpeed could aim for Bonneville.
can't wait to see what you do!

Have you done any hybrid electrics? With a motor and generator and smaller batteries, driving an electric axel?

BRILLIANT project! Tell me something about the speed and safety (I know the 996 was in development tough to keep stable at top speed). Would the aero still keep the car on the road at 30mph more top end, than it was tested for under development?

The Tesla motors are salvage units that we then recondition/modify. The batteries are new. 👍

I suspect you could replace the current AC with something more modern and designed for EVs, after all you may end up driving to sunny Spain in this thing. The advantage would be it would be a heat pump, efficient at heating as well as cooling. Having lived in a hot climate with cars without air conditioning they are simply miserable in the heat.

The Welsh climate doesn’t require AC too often. We need a good heater. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿☔️

My .02c for it or build plan. Lower it a bit on good quality coilovers or active suspension like the teslarossas had.
Tesla m3p 4du driving the rear wheels light makes up to 408hp.
    50-60kwh pack.
Lightweight seats, lightweight forged 17-18" wheels with max 255 width tires.
Better brakes lines and pads. Updated led lightning, update the stereo.
