Honestly, I'm ashamed you didn't talk more about the disastrous staging for Point of No Return. It's my favorite song in the entire soundtrack and the way they buggered it up by making Phantom and Christine interact is so infuriating and so betraying of, at the minimum, what they're singing about in the very song and, at the maximum, betraying of the characters and plot set-up before that moment.
Let's also not forget the awful not-quite tango (that wasn't a thing yet) and the slit that is more like a seam that just wasn't sewn. We also don't get that, "oh, shit," moment when she really realizes who's on stage with her. Everything just compounds and it feels much like how Kennedy treated everyone who was a fan of Star Wars before the sequel trilogy or how Johnson treated character development in The Last Jedi (he doesn't know her). It came across as a cheaper way to do some production of Phantom that sets things up for LND solely with the blocking (because the book for the show (not just the novel), leaves absolutely no room for it). The Phantom of the Opera: Budget Edition, now with more abuse!
Wow, that was absolute torture to watch; thank you for putting this together! I loved your humor and sarcasm especially adding comments from Cameron stating 'this is a love triangle! Really? I thought Erik was supposed to be much older and represented a father figure to Christine! I can't tell you how many times I yelled at what I was watching! I won't go into horrid detailed. CM is trying to replicate the 'success' of the movie so he brought the movie to the stage. Now the action is all up close and personal as if you were watching a live version of the movie. My favorite scene, 'the final lair' is atrocious on so many levels. Some of what happened in this scene is a set-up for Love Never Dies which I think you pointed out. I refuse to see this production. I can't even watch a bootleg on this site! I feel sorry for those who never got a chance to se e the original staging and hope they will discover it on UA-cam. Really great videos. They make you appreciate the genius of Hal Prince even more when you see how much thought and care he put into his choices as opposed to this dolt who didn’t have the simplest instincts about building audience empathy or even competent blocking.
This hurts. As someone who waited decades before seeing it on Broadway, this version somehow feels like a personal attack. I feel for all the talent doing their best. It would be disappointing to get cast or hired in another role in such an iconic show and this is what you get.
So it has recently come to my attention (after watching this trio of videos a few times) that my first live Phantom experience was this tour! And now I'm just thinking it's all coming together. I am shocked at the utter lack of emotion or movement in this. I just saw the production at Sydney Opera house and it was nothing like this! Amy Manford actually acted like she was terrified at the prospect of having to perform in Don Juan, Josh Piterman was allowed to climb on the Statues for the sake of levels and dynamics, the graveyard scene I am glad to say was NOTHING like this. I was disappointed with red death costume when he appeared but I think Mr Piterman wore it a bit better. It still doesn't compare to the original though. I don't know what happened but I'm glad someone came to their senses in time for the Sydney run.
Saw it in Melbourne today. Yeah those few feet above on the statue did wonders. Almost like a pole dance on the cross though! Christine I think got one step towards him in the 'hypnotising' bit before Raoul came in with his slappyfight. Terribly funny stuff.
Truly as the great words of Phantom, A disaster beyond imagination has occurred. May this cost Macintoshes more money loss because he should not mess with the show that is working
I honestly just think it is so funny how they couldn't even keep the original choreography or even have the damn chandelier on the ground at the begginning..
Im in tears. And I'm not sure if it's because of the narrative, or that it's much worse than I thought! I knew when the 2004 movie came out, it was the beginning of the end. I fear were at the other end of that now, and it won't be long until Phantom I a completely shut down production
Trying to pump the breaks as hard as I can on that one, it would be one heartbreaking day to see it leave Broadway, though innovations have slowly crept in through the decades as it is anyway… Glad you enjoyed the narrative

There is no magic (nor mystique) in this staging. In this version, Christine is devoid of charm, appeal (or self-awareness). She has become an operatic Barbie-doll to be flung around at her abuser's whim. The Phantom (for his part) has been reduced to an abusive, strutting Neanderthal devoid of charm, charisma or pathos. Half way thru this travesty, I wanted to use the Punjab lasso on him myself! And don't get me started on the table dance...
Something I have learned over the last year of making this channel and looking at various productions/versions of the story... is that if Christine is poorly written, the entire story is poorly written!!... More on that another time I think, I have a lot of examples of this!
Your videos helped me get over seeing the show today. Friends bought me a ticket so I couldnt bag it out and laugh at bits afterwards (though I did laugh during). I did enjoy the show though but I love messy trash. Your videos made me laugh and yell YYEEEEES! Thank you for the shoulder!
I have heard that in Italy the Phantom disappears through the bed. He curls on it under a blanket, or the cloack, and when Meg removes it there is the mask. I have seen pictures of the costumes and found them terrible, as I can understand Christine doesn't even wear a wedding dress in Final Lair. The director casted Ramin as the Phantom but I seriously wonder if the show deserves to be seen or just listened to. I don't want to spend a lot of money (about 100 euros for a good seat) and have to watch something like this. Everybody say it's a big show, wonderful, smashing... I don't think they have ever seen the original staging, not even on the internet, as I did many times.
That's rough... sad to hear that. I have a friend who saw it, the inside of the opera house is breath taking, on the ceiling there's a mural of the sky which is illumined like day when the lights are on, and then when the theater darkens, the mural turns to night with sparkling little stars. But that mural is there with or without the Phantom! So, depending on how you feel maybe wait for the next show...!
I don't really like this version, either :-( Did they had to make it "politically correct" and ruin it, like movies, books and so on? :-( They had to know that the skeleton costume is needed, 'cause after the movie came out they pointed out that it was missing.
While there's nothing entirely wrong with non-replica productions of Phantom (personally, I quite like the Polish and Czech productions)... wtf, this "re-imagined" version has so many bizarre choices that left me scratching my head! So glad I got to see the original replica production when it toured the US. If it were to tour again, oh how I wish it would be the slightly retweaked (and tragically short-lived) 2020 UK tour version, instead of this...
I was so tired of the whole thing by that point to even point out how bad PONR and the final moments were; I just left them for everyone else to have fun with...lol
I think what happened is that the Phantom put on the hood and Meg grabbed him with the mob surrounding the two. When Meg tugs off the cloak/hood, the Phantom disappears Obi-Wan Kenobi style, leaving behind his mask
See, what's happening is a group of trained male officers are bursting into the lair of a kidnapper/murderer, and instead of seizing him, they let a Small Teenage Girl do it... And because she's a dancer and not a police officer, she just kind of stands there for what seems an eternity holding the suspect's shoulders, probably wondering if the dudes are going to, you know, help in any way. Once the actor playing the Phantom has successfully taken his sweet time crawling under the bed set, Meg drops the cloak and they all pretend he disappeared. Yes, this explanation took you out of the moment, but the staging kind of did that anyway... There are so many incredible, faster ways they could have done the "vanishing" bit with the technology today, but they did...this.
So, Cameron Mackintosh IS one of the original creators, as the producer of the original show. He, with Andrew Lloyd Webber wanted to cash in on a "new version" of the show by cutting out the contributions of (now deceased) original creators, Maria Bjornson (the costume and set designer), Gillain Lynne (choreographer), and Hal Prince (Director) so they could get a bigger cut instead of paying royalties to the estates of the deceased other creators of the original show.
To think this is Australia's first phantom production since 2007 to 2009 playing now at the sydney opera house. At least they did the looking cool sydney harbor production first.
@@pryingpandoraproductions yeah, thr original one with the revolving stage was perfect and there was no updates required. I was also sad that in the 1997 changes they cut marius' line to the thernardiers at the wedding "when I look at you I remember eponine. She was more than you deserved. You gave her birth but now she is with God and happier I hope than here on earth." Showing he would always remember her.

Everyone, Let's Pray to God that if The Phantom of the Opera Revives on Broadway, It'll Be the Brilliant Original. Not this ludicrous Train-Wreck Restaged Tour. Granted, I Haven't Seen this Restaged Tour but My Parents did back in 2016. Although I Haven't seen this Tour, I STILL Prefer the Original. what @daaesviolin Said, I Truly Cannot Believe This Changes. Poor Mackman didn't understand what made the original production the king of theater. I Fell Miserable for All the Actors in the Restaged Tour for being in the Catastrophe. I Can Forgive the 2004 Movie (Seen Clips but Not Ready Full Movie) for all it's sins, But This, No Because Then We Have a Problem. With The Phantom of the Opera Closed on Broadway for Almost Five Months (At The Time of writing this) Now, I Truly Hoped that the Brilliant Original will be the Revival, Not this Train-wreck restaged tour. By Brilliant Original, I Mean With EVERY LITTLE THING UNTOUCH OR CHANGED, Via Costumes, Set, Choreography, Etc. Like The Brilliant Original on Broadway Never Left Us. We Love You, Brilliant OG Phantom Bway, Please Come Back Someday.🙏🖤🥀 I Hope Late Hal, Maria and Gillian Never Had to see this Restaged Tour Catastrophe.

Once the actor playing the Phantom has successfully taken his sweet time crawling under the bed set, Meg drops the cloak and they all pretend he disappeared. Yes, this explanation took you out of the moment, but the staging kind of did that anyway...
There are so many incredible, faster ways they could have done the "vanishing" bit with the technology today, but they did...this.

this looks like a high school budget take on this show
I wish I had a high school budget to make these videos!
I'm glad that I saw the us tour before they f'ed with it
Word
Is this the director's fault? I thought this show has to be replicated almost exactly like the original.
@@pryingpandoraproductions Oh!, this is the result of their greed. What a shame!
@@cubessopranista8772 Heart breaking for sure.
Shameful ain’t it?!
Just how they have the actors move is atrocious. It looks like an amateur production.
To think this is Australia's first phantom production since 2007 to 2009 playing now at the sydney opera house. At least they did the looking cool sydney harbor production first.
Sydney Harbor had some cool vibes, especially when it rained...! Entirely different feel, but I respect it for its faithfulness.
@@pryingpandoraproductions out of curiosity I ask what do you think of the 2009 25th anniversary re-staged production?
@@a.t.m873 I have a review coming about that eventually. Overall, poor experience.
@@a.t.m873 So heart wrenching! We're lucky to have lived in a time to see these magnificent stories played out faithfully on a stage, but it hurts to see it all change...
Honestly the movie isn't THAT bad, especially when compared to this... you can tell they at least TRIED, there was some heart to it. Just ignore the singing... Thanks so much for dropping a note!
@@pryingpandoraproductions No Problem 🖤
I remember seeing this detestable staging in the Los Angeles tour with Chris Mann... Ugh.
Oh yeah they attended the Gerard Butler school of POTO
The Commentry was GREAT .My stomach hearts from laughing 🤣.
There's another POTO musical , by Ken Hill and it looks like a parody so can you do a Review. 🥰 Thanks
Hah thanks I’m glad you liked it!
