Suntour XCT Fork Service - Disassemble/Clean/Lube/Re-assemble

- I show how to tear down, clean, lubricate and rebuild Suntour XCT (SF8-XCT-V2) forks/shocks. Periodic maintenance will help prolong the life of the fork and maintain performance. Basic service to keep your suspension working and from becoming stiff or frozen. This bike is a Raleigh Mojave 4.0. The XCT fork models have varied over the years. I believe this fork is a SF8-XCT-V2 from 2008.
* Use grease made for forks. I use Slickoleum which is also sold under the name Slick Honey. You can also use SRAM Butter or Judy Butter. If the fork uses oil, use the proper fork oil. Use of a grease/oil not made specifically for forks can damage the plastic/polyurethane parts, or otherwise leave the fork not working properly.

This helped me so much and it was the grease that was the problem for me don’t use park tool polymer grease for forks use slickolium
You save my bike
Thanks from Algéria
You are lagend
Hey , I’m new to your channel (about 2 weeks) and you have helped me fix my specialized fsr xc comp 2005 and you are straight to the point and no nonsense.
Keep these videos coming!
JUST what I needed!!!!! I can't find tutorials on the XCT ANYWHERE! Thank you good sir!!
I clicked on the little bell as requested! Thank you for all your amazing content. I'm rebuilding a trek 3700 mountain bike at the moment and would not of had the confidence to take on this project without you! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Thank you.
Dear Mr Guy! Thank you SO much for making this video! My son's front forks were completely seized, but you showed me how to take them apart, and now they're lovely and springy again!
I made the mistake of riding with a seized fork…. Broke my wrist
like, you expected it to spring but it was locked ?@@spoonimations5131
Timing is perfect have some suntour forks to strip. Down with my son looks alot easier than I thought many thanks for the great videos
Thanks RJ
You are definitely helping me to build my masters of bicycle mechanics, you tube should really offer diplomas after a certain number of hours of study lol. I've Been fixing my old bikes up and pasting them on with confidence that thay ride well and are safe, thanks in a lage part to your videos, l'm so confidence in fact i just bought a very rough but complete 1974 RALEIGH grand prix off ebay for $20 to restore.
Excellent video as AWAYS RJ! Seems like a super simple and easy build inside to take apart and service ourselves, and with your instructions and demo, couldn't be easier. Thank you sir!
Very good explanation. Finally someone showed how to lubricate the basic suspension fork.
Great job! Thanks for your videos. My suntour M3010 is practically the same as the XCT and I was able to guide myself with no problems. Greetings from Argentina!!🇦🇷
excellent video. these forks are everywhere and knowing how to work on them will most definitely come in handy
Nice & simple fork to overhaul.. great quality video & sound..
I've been watching RJ's videos for a while now and, although I appreciate the information he provides (he's awesome), I always look forward to see what beverages he has on the background :)
A little too heavy on the diet Pepsi, in my opinion.
My front fork for my bike is just about the same as this fork but I have two springs instead of one the process of taking mine apart is still the same also I got mine apart cleaned and put it back together but thank you for this video RJ cause you have been a big help with everything I know about bikes
Thanks! Just rebuilt my forks after watching this video. Super simple and they’re like new again
That's great stuff, RJ - just found you for the first time - will be subscribing! Thanks very much!
Thanks for showing us how to do this!!! I just got a mountain bike off of Craigslist and I am overhauling it.
Thanks for taking the time to shoot and share this.
Thanks so much! This is what's on my bike. The fork still works great, but I'm wanting to fix it up since it's 10 years old and has never been serviced.
Just in time for a cup of coffee and a great video by RJ
Nice demo with the tear down and rebuild 👍🚲🔧
Finally you do these forks !
You would do a lot of views with a comprehensive electric conversion. Just saying, you're the boss and decide. Congrats for the 200000 mark, when I joined you were at 30000 or so, fully deserved.
Thanks RJ I'm going to service my friends xct fork and your video is going to be really useful
Okay I think I'm not going to service this crap, it's totally toast
@@fedi1140 I had the same experience 😉 ended up grabbing a steal from my local bike shop on last seasons forks. Never looked back 😎
Gracias por enseñarnos como se hace!
Thanks for teaching us how to do it!
Thanks for the super clear explanations, really helpful!
amazing presentation your knowledge is way up there.
Yeah. Finally. Love you 3000.
Great video. I watched this as my son's XCT fork has started to seize. I bought him a new XCR fork (that's the best I could find for a 24 inch wheel). I thought about servicing the XCT we took off, and selling it, but for such a low value fork, I'm not sure I can be bothered. But great video though.
Good video buddy! Salutes from phoenix,az!
I think you deserve a "Super Nice!"
My forks were a little different but I figured it out with the video. I didn't have the extender needed to get a 5mm hex wrench down the fork tube but it turned out that I didn't need to completely disassemble the forks, I was able to slid the forks out to full extension, apply grease, reassemble and everything works now.
Nice video. That looked easy.
Love all of your videos! 👍
Very helpful. I know what I'm doing next weekend!
Perfect. I have to do mine now on a second hand bike I bought.
v good yr good at Conveying instructions at the same time get on with it so it's not too boring but very interesting thanks very much
Thank you! This video was very informative!
Disassemble video about xcm forks would be great
So great! I have the exact fork on my specialized Hardrock. cool, now I can do the same thing to mine ... thank you very much... Charlie m.
Can't wait to tackles this task myself. My spring must be bone dry after not servicing for 5+ years. I love lube, my favorite part of the process, can't wait to buy some 'light lube' and slather my spring. Ahhhhh..
Thanks very helpful cos I have a bike left with me with this type of fork but they are seized.
Nice video, RJ
Good channel, good luck
Great video!!
Thanks very helpfull information.
This was cool! Thumps up
I don't have my ST raidon fork anymore, but I wish there was a service vid like this one back when I had it because getting it serviced cost half of the cost of a new fork and it seemed completely out of proportions.
Thank you sir for another informative video. You do a great service to the home bike mechanic, especially those who have older bikes, or less expensive models where the service of their parts such as forks will differ from the techniques used to service a more expensive model.
I'm sure your bike work stand gets a lot of use, what make make and model is it? And how has it held up? Thanks again!
An old used Minoura I bought on craigslist.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, your channel is amazing
I have a couple of questions
How long is the extension?
What is the measurement of the socket 3/8, 1/2?
you're the best
Awesome 👏 mountain bike
Спасибо большое! Очень помогло :)
Those are veeery old actually but the process is still the same for XCT and XCM except that the XCT has 2 adjuster caps or a lockout and two springs or one spring and the XCM typically has a lockout and a spring!
I have a 2020 XCT fork, can I just remove one of two springs to make it bouncier? right now, it is just a really heavy rigid fork with zero "suspension".
@@Justmyopinionlol You can (then you have a fater M3030) but i would recommend regreasing ist first as this sounds like a ceased fork
@@Justmyopinionlol in the same situation as you, did you end up taking one of the coils out? If so did it help and does it actually work safely?
thats much easier than i tought... just the wrench is problem as usual on bikes
Hey! Happy to see you again! Have any manufacturers explained why only one spring/elastomer?
Apparently that's enough for light riding.
Less weight. This type of fork is usually up around 2.5kg (@5lb) already, so a second spring would take it way past silly.
I love that bike RJ THE BIKE GUY ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I am from Nottingham in the UK where the Raleigh cycle brand hails from.
Cool. I am from Seattle in the USA where Jimi Hendrix, Heart, Pearl Jam, Queensryche, and Soundgarden hail from.
i own an xct fork but i bought it used and its been modified cut springs and the lockout is unknown and i haven't touch it since then.
Hello, Rebuilt my SR Suntour NEX fork/shock and now preload adjustment is frozen. Any ideas on how to free it up? Thank you for all your videos.
Can you do a video on how to fix a mongoose brawler BMX bike rear hub mine completely fell apart and the bearing casing got crushed it's a cassette hub
Here is a hub overhaul on a Trek BMX bike. I have other
ua-cam.com/video/8rskB6afPLE/v-deo.html
My spring appears to be stuck inside after taking the caps off. Can’t push the assembly up to pop out the spring like you did. Any ideas or is it just done? (It still works but squeaks like crazy on the single track.)
hi,good video, but I was wondering if this will fix the problem of my forks squeaking,I have a xcm suntour coil forks and everytime I compress it,it will make a loud squeaking noise which is annoying in the trails or just street riding
A grinder key works perfect for the caps.
Thank for your video, super informative! I am thinking about this little project: My kid's bike has a 20" XCT fork, and it seems to me that the front end sits too low, so I am thinking about adding spaces to raise it. From your video I'd guess they could fit above the plastic parts that go on the bolts that secure the bottles. Does this sound right? I might need to use longer bolts though.
No idea what you are talking about.
@@RJTheBikeGuy 😕
Thanks!
Nicely done rj ☺ btw what model raleigh mtb is that?,it looks fairly new/in great condition too 👍👍👍👍
Raleigh Mojave 4.0.
Thanks a lot.
I have a question, now a days XCT forks are comes with a lockout, this video isn't covered lockout part, can I follow "XCR fork overhauling video" for lockout part?
Probably.
Can you still lock everything without the coil spring? I want to convert my XCT to a lowered Rigid Fork. Thanks for your answer in advance.
Bearing in mind I use these forks on a mtb ebike conversion for road use only, is there any benefit in fitting a second coil to the empty side?
How long does the racket extension got be in cm
Excellent video. I'm stuck at the part where I need this crazy long extension part to reach the bottom. Is there a workaround?
I answer myself for future reference :). If you run into this problem extend the fork as far as possible and than you can unscrew the bottom bolt because it wont turn easy any more (you use the pull pressure to hold the counter part). No need for extender.
@@jazzper_nl thanks for the tip. I was trying to hold the threaded shaft from the bottom (outside of) the fork while screwing the bolt on haha
i have a scott yz1 with sr suntour xc-60 that are frozen how do i fix it?
Excuse me sir what size of the spring if I want to change a new spring ?
My forks have two springs! When did they start doing that in these forks?
when the spring wears out, could the fork be used as a rigid fork?
nice job, do you thig oil chain its good for forks, when i tighten a plastic thread i go first anticlockwise until i hear click or i feel that its a the beginng of the thread
Oil chain? Do you mean use chain oil in forks? No, use proper fork oil. The part tightens clockwise. And you have to push down to get it to engage.
Good job RJ, but what if one wants to modify the forks?
Modify it how? If you want a different fork, install a different fork.
Hi, had you ever fixed the cartridge leaking oil in XCR fork? The cartridge seems not to be made to be taken apart and unable to lock when the oil is out.
I haven't worked on one of those yet.
Классный канал)
Nice, I always wondered about the guts on these types of forks. This is unrelated to the forks but I wanted to ask you. Have you ever installed any of those bmx type of foot pegs on the back of a mountain bike? I was wondering if I could use something like that to carry someone else since they don't have a bike. I'm not sure what you need on something like that though or what they actually include on those pegs or whatever they call them.
No I haven't. I don't trust those pegs. Seems like they would bend the axles.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Good point. I guess you would still need to use a solid axle to make sure which is more than I want to do. Here's a video showing another way to do it, at least on one side which I thought was interesting. ua-cam.com/video/m6Mu1LCvL48/v-deo.html
Can we add lockout to this forks
First great vid
Are there 2 springs in the suspension housing?
FYI some of the Suntour XCT forks on the slightly beefier mountain bikes have two springs, and the bolts inside the forks require a 5mm hex socket - the 12mm normal socket will not work because the bolts have a rounded head. Took me an hour and lots of swearing to figure this out :)
EDIT: My fork is an SF9XCT-V2-DS-26-100
On my fork the lockout side is not coming out and it is stuck in their do you know how to take the whole this out?
ua-cam.com/video/BUgt96qfV68/v-deo.html
I got the same fork, recently I bought the Suntour plastic wrench to dissasemble it, but the plastic cap is so seized inside the fork that cannot do a simple turn, I fear the wrench will break if I apply excesive force because is just plastic, how do I solve this seized cap??
Not sure. Haven't encountered that. You can make a tool. ua-cam.com/video/tABGvESjL4o/v-deo.html
Hello im new to mtn biking, and servicing them. O have a Giant brand 2015 boulder 1 bike. , my forks are SR Suntour XCT lock-out, 80mm travel. Is it possible to do a video that shows you how to disaseble an service my type of forks with lock-out? From reading the comments im assuming not all xtc's are the same layout (im still learning) I live in Astralia so im not sure if we have thread locker blue, so what else could i use?
One of these days.
does the spring doesnt stress the fork because of uneven force distribution?? nice work as always
No idea. Probably riding it on a way rougher terrain than it was made for. I didn't design it.
Crystal clear and very helpful
If you have a single spring fork like this, could a person put springs on both sides? Or is the cap side not threaded as well?
Just buy a fork with coils on both sides. I can't remember if it was threaded. But you don't have the threaded cap/adjuster for that side, or the coil. Not sure what else. It's not made for it.
How do you get the lower cap bolts off if it keeps spinning? I tried your impact trick but no luck. I tried compressing it but not sure if that helps enough.
Did you watch this video?
Do the forks have oil because Halfords said they do but this video tells me no ?
Congrats very helpful!! I have same bike, and I’m going to make some upgrades on parts. So kind of fork I need to buy? Is there any brads than you can suggest or special reference?? Thanks
You have to do research on what works for you. I don't do recommendations.
I understand that, but I was speaking about a reference to get a right part to this old bike. But thank you anyway. Good luck
Since you were upgrading to the same bike, I thought you could give me some advice before making the purchase.
@@tubosmios There isn't a "right" fork. There are lots of different forks that will work. ua-cam.com/video/rUX_cTuk3O8/v-deo.html
@@RJTheBikeGuy thank you so much
I was wondering if I could have some help, I have a pair of rst forks that are a similar build to hear suntours. However, when trying to loosen the bolts to remove the lowers, it does not come out and just spins round instead. I have tried shocking the bolt as well as compressing the forks but nothing seems to work
Try finding a video or instructions for your RST fork!
@@RJTheBikeGuy I have. There are none 😂
@@kaankoylu4504 Shrug. I have multiple RST for videos. I own a Honda car, I don't pick up a Ford manual and call Ford saying, my car is similar, how do I fix whatever. Different forks are different!!!!
@@RJTheBikeGuy ok I'm just a bit stuck 😂 thanks anyway
I destroyed my ForkCaps do you know what size are they so I can order new ones? 25.4mm-27.5mm-30mm?
I can't believe I'm this early.
I love u Tony stark 3000😭😭😭😭
Gonna say it in every comment of any kind of video😭😭😭
I have a 29r xct with a manual lockout from a 2014 model. My issue is it has the older style lockout with the black lever that switches to green or red. I can not get the lever assembly to remove or find any information on it. Note it is not the newer blue lever style.
I don't know. I haven't worked on that one. They keep changing stuff and using the same name.
@@RJTheBikeGuy the new lockouts are pretty easy but that one seems to be a mystery
Hi,
Is there no oil in this fork?
