Wonderful that you had the foresight to film these before and after shots David. Really enjoyable video, what a shame that superb box at Kirkham Junction is no more
Thanks very much Austin, really appreciate that and your recognition of the foresight needed with these sorts of videos - looking back, Network Rail were originally planning to have it done by 2015/16, but it was delayed due to contractual issues. Really enjoyed putting it together and revisiting some of the locations, but the modern railway doesn't really interest me. Thank God for the S&C (for now)!
A very interesting video and an excellent job done in the making David, have never filmed in that area before and certainly not inclined to now, very sad to see progress turn into a right dogs dinner, what more can I say, regards nige
Thank you very much Nige, much appreciated and I know what you mean - not a lot to get excited about photographically any more, plus it's very flat. Glad to get what I could before it was lost forever, but increasingly disillusioned by how unattractive the modern railway often looks, no style, no history, no people!
I used to live at Treales, from Spen Lane Bridge go up the hill, the road does a right and then a left turn, comes out at the Derby Arms, turn left and about 100 yards on the left is the old farmhouse where we lived - Stanley Farm.
railwayswithcharlie Many thanks Charlie, much appreciated and nice to hear. Yes it’s on the footpath between Derby Hill and Weeton Road near Great Plumpton. Best approached from Weeton Road I’d say.
@@Linesider1 well after 4 months i'm finally looking into it, how easy is parking for cars near that location? im looking on OS maps and im quite stuck.
railwayswithcharlie I’ve always approached it from Preston New Road. If you take the B5260 (Weeton Road) north from the crossroads, after half a mile there is a sharp left hand bend. There is space to park there, where the footpath goes off. Hope this helps.
A very different and excellent video. Great documentation of the changes. I appreciate it may not be possible in every location but why does Network Rail in 2019 or now continue to demolish so many (former) signal boxes instead of leasing them out to community groups for artists or other possible uses? That demolished box was to my eyes from Australia an attractive structure that could have been preserved, provided giving community members access didn't encourage or result in trespassing of rail tracks. I have been to Blackpool by rail quite a few years ago, enjoying the unique style of tramway.
Thank you very much Edmund, much appreciated and apologies for the slow reply - I've only just seen your comment. Unfortunately, there seems to be little appetite to preserve certain signal boxes, and the cost of dismantling and re-building elsewhere presumably being too great for many preservation societies. A real shame, as we are losing some very fine structures. Thanks again, David.
@@Linesider1 But thanks to people like you, at least they are 'preserved' in perpetuity on media like UA-cam. Dedicated of you to 'get the shots.' A worldwide audience is appreciative.
Awesome shots but I will say one thing Shame 76079 and 45407 don't double head anymore! Used to love seeing them all the time on the s and c in the 2000s
76079's sadly now no longer owned by Ian Riley so is confined to Grosmont-Whitby trips, closest we'll see a standard 4 2-6-0 & black 5 double heading now is when 76084 is paired up with one of them. Shame though that 76084's seen so little mainline use since it returned to the mainline in 2017. Ticket on the pocket rocket is due to expire soon too.
It's a shame that I only ever filmed steam traction on that route once which was when 46233 worked the Fylde Coast Express back in 2012 & even more of a shame that I never traveled along the route behind steam traction either before it was modernised. All of the original layout at Kirkham is now consigned to history and never again will we see it like that (unless someone with a De-Lorean time machine comes along). Should an opportunity arrise in the future I will try then to get steam haulage down it as it's something ya need to tick off just once in your life. For me route wise I wanna get as many routes as I can with steam traction, had covid not come about this year's trip would've likely run and with the postponement of the A1 & A3 railtours I would've had an opportunity, obviously wont be till 2022 now or whenever another is run.
Is it just me ? Demolish that beautiful signal box, build that awful warehouse type building, erect overhead wires !!!! What ! Sometimes our planning departments forget our heritage in pursuit of progress. Or, am i just being a grumpy old bloke ? Not too many replies to the last bit please.
It's a difficult balance I think, Barry - heritage vs. progress. But I will say, the Network Rail explanatory videos which, whilst informative and well produced, simplify and perhaps mislead how the new infrastructure will look (in my opinion) - e.g. the footbridge shown in this video - left faced with rust? What's that all about.
Excellent job David
Many thanks Scott.

That was different, very good!
Many thanks Jim, glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent video, David. Fascinating from beginning to end!
Thanks very much Alan, glad you liked it, I enjoyed putting it together and recalling some memories of earlier times.
Good to see the progress! Britain needs more electrification. Still just 38%.

A really interesting video of a local station to me, do you know where the former foot crossing at Weeton is located?
