I have decided to grow onions from seed for the first time this year too. I have always overwintered sets but they have now bolted early summer before getting big enough so I think seeds don't do that. I may also sow some on Boxing Day (if I can remember after Christmas!!) Charles Dowding says that is a traditional time for onion sowing as well for a later crop. I also have issues with labels. I now use a pencil on my labels as it does general stay visible for longer and is easier to rub off. I know Jessie (plot 37) suggested pencil although she uses wooden lolly stick for labels, which are cheap to buy and biodegradable but I find they rot off too quickly for putting in the ground, so I use sturdy plastic ones in my beds but written in pencils so easy to clean and reuse. Wooden labels are great for seeds though.
I've grown onions from seed for the past few years, with mixed success. Poor this year, but i think it was due to the weather. Try multi sowing, then you can harvest a few as spring onions, then leave the rest to mature into small/medium size onions.
I grew onions from seed for the first time this year, set them on boxing day with the potty mouth gang, it worked wonderfully, they did far better than my sets.
You’ll love the Fordhook chard…delicious and very productive. I start my onions mid February inside and plant out in beginning of May. I grew Alisa Craig, Patterson and Red Ruby. I had great luck and really got very large onions. Once planted out I hit them with organic liquid nitrogen weekly until they bulb. It took me several years to figure out the formula.
New Sub 😊 All looking amazing in that polytunnel! If you let your forget-me-nots self seed, you'll get some strange creations next year. I've had some variegated pink and blue, they were stunning. On my shorts if you fancy a gander! 😅 Happy Gardening 🌱😊
This is my first year growing onions from seed and they are definitely doing better than my previous years with sets. Even after my two "helpers" decided the onion bed would be a fun place to play.
This is the second year I tried onions from seed and I had great succes getting them to grow but then they struggled in the beginning of summer when it was so dry and in the end of it all the allium leaf miner got to them all 😅 next year I'm going to net them! (Last year I only grew a few but it was great)
I'll be sowing some onion seed this week too. The great thing about seed, as opposed to sets, is that they are guaranteed free of white rot! I've tried that Chioggia beetroot, yes it looks great but it tastes horrible (I think). I won't be growing it again.
I have white rot in my garden, I think it lives in the soil for a number. of years. I’ve grown onions from seed at the allotment-no white rot but I got onion fly instead…onions from seed don’t bolt like sets…
Coucou
Encore une belle vidéo
Bravo 👍
A bientôt

Hey another amazing video thanks for sharing your experience with your plot
I’m dedicating part of the coming winter to designing indelible, water repellent labels! Love your dog! What a sweetie!!

Pleased to hear that 😊
lovely as always Hannah. I think your poly tunnel is in need of a hotbed for winter ;-) that will keep it nice and toasty
I think so too 😄
They are Mesembryanthemum (livingstone dasy)
