Cynthia has an amazing voice and made this song her own. She didn’t quite capture Aretha’s style (Cynthia’s voice is silkier, for lack of a better term), but I can respect that she didn’t just do an impersonation. She did it differently without butchering it and I appreciate that.

She did an alright job. At least she did not try to oversing it like so many artists do who think more is more. I do not think anyone else could have done a better job of this song. It is super difficult to sing Aretha and no one will ever come close.

It’s officially coming out in August 13, 2021 near the 3rd anniversary of the Queen of Soul’s passing. They pushed it back because of the pandemic and they want to release it when theaters have the official green light to open and get a head start for 2022 award season.

I saw the virtual premiere last night. It was really good and I’m excited for the series, but a soundtrack featuring anyone other than Aretha feels gratuitous.

This could have been done like Selena was with JLo. The soulfulness is why she is a legend. My grandmother was a diehard fan...even saw her sing when her father would preach. JHud was personally picked by Aretha...so ya her family will challenge this. Aretha could play by ear but went to Juilliard to learn how to play. I'm sure the actress did her best...but the vocals must be soulful/gospel. Anything less is disrespect. Pick up her autobiography and you will see what I mean. There is a song "call me when you get there " she is literally formulating as she is waving goodbye to her husband as he is leaving. Brilliant woman. So unfortunate this is not what Aretha would have wanted or Carol king...who wrote Respect.

Carol King did not write Respect, Otis Redding did. Aretha covered “ RESPECT” but her and her sister Carolyn added the phrase “ SOCK- It -TO -Me, and she spelled out “R-E-S-P-E-C-T and it became her own. She just Aretha sizes it.

Full disclosure, I’m really anticipating “Respect” with Jhud. The thing for me is every time I see Cynthia in the previews and in this film, she is channeling Mary J. Blige (looks and way of speaking) more than she is Aretha. Also, not sure about this cover, Cynthia is a great singer but this is missing something. Hope both are successful but Jhud had me at “I’d like you to call me Ms. Franklin”
