I was pretty young when this came out and a big Dionne Warwick fan. This is early Aretha when she was doing covers of songs on Capital Records. Always felt guilty liking this one better, like I was betraying Dionne! 😬

@@electionevie2693 1964, on her last album with Columbia, "Runnin' Out of Fools". Dionne's original was released in April 1964. Aretha's album was mostly covers of other folks' songs, but "Runnin' Out of Fools" was her one hit from it.
I was a toddler but we had the Queen playing in the house all the time. I think I was singing her songs before I learned how to walk and talk. Love you Queen Aretha forever. Rest In Heavenly Peace. ❤️💐💐💐

Imagine owning an original Vincent Van Gogh painting and hanging it in your laundry room. That's kind of like what Columbia did with Aretha, though some of the recordings were brilliant regardless (I'd say this is a great uptown soul recording). By 1964, Southern soul was definitely a thing, Otis Redding and other deep soul singers were making waves, and Columbia was still sending Aretha into orchestral sessions and hoping she could cross over like Nancy Wilson. I'm sure it made a certain amount of sense in the marketplace of 1964, because the mainstream pop market was bigger than the R&B market. But in the long run, Columbia would have sold about 100x more Aretha Franklin records if they had understood her gifts a little better.

Dionne Warwick OWNS this track. Not even Aretha can come close. I say a little prayer is an exception, both artists produced extraordinary versions of that song.

Jeremy Manning , I like Dionne`s version and she had a huge hit with it and of course she recorded it before Aretha but I love Aretha`s version, her voice is just pure beauty, like liquid gold.
