Well done my friend. I spent 7hrs today trying to get a usb to boot to linux mint. And the previous video was way off compared to yours! Thank you so much
Very glad to hear it. Linux is easier than many people realize, but there is still a learning curve. Once a few key concepts are down, installing and using Linux is a breeze. Enjoy Linux Mint! :)
Windows 10, 8.1, and 8 all have fast startup and will leave your system hung with an already mounted disk if you dual boot. It doesn't matter what the second operating system is. I'm surprised no one has got back on here and commented that this locked up their pc. You can delay this by turning off Fast Startup, but Windows will turn it back on. You will lock your system. Otherwise this is a very good, clear easy to follow video.
@@eyreisheyes uh. Pretty sure that wouldn't be a good idea A switch to mac or chromebook would be too expensive As making a hackintosh or tricking chrome os onto booting on ur pc is illegal.. If you are a gamer linux wont have some popular games .-.

Completely agree, this is a good, general, user-friendly solution to get the best of both worlds, but this won't be the best solution for everyone. For those who are comfortable with using the PC BIOS and opening up their physical computer, I would ideally recommend purchase of a new hard drive, install the secondary hard drive into your machine, and install Linux directly onto that machine without affecting the Windows 10 drive.
This is the first video I’ve found anywhere that shows you a step by step install of an operating system. I’ve used Linux before with windows and for me to install it as as a noose back then, years ago, was hit and miss to have a dual boot system but I got it working. I’ve been out of using windows and Linux for several years now and just bought a new laptop with windows 10 on it, but want Linux on it since I like more privacy and a better system. This makes it easy for beginners of Linux to get started. Great job man and keep up the good work. Thank for the refresher.
This may help someone out... I tried going through this 3 times but my system refused to recognize the USB drive as a bootable device. I have no idea why but after swapping to a different USB drive it worked straight away. Happy days! Hello guys I am facing an issue. I am currently on the Linux mint OS which I have booted through a USB Flash drive on a Dell Laptop. The installation process a bit different form the video. There is no option while installing linux as shown at 16:55. Please help.
Good job. Thanks for the slow pace. The only suggestions are, lose that distracting background music and it appeared that you had perfect zoom on the Rufus form when it was drifting across the screen but then pulled back to a difficult to view size.
This is a great video on how to dual boot Windows and Linux alongside each other, and I would like to pass along MY experience as a novice to doing this. Just passing along my experience with dual booting Linux and Windows, If you want to switch from Windows to Linux ---- or---- from Linux back to Windows, for one reason or another, DO NOT use the restart, Do a complete shut down of your computer, reason...... once the operating system you are using takes charge of sound, and or video, That system will NOT release those particular items if you use restart, it will continue to control those particular items, and the system will NOT release those applications unlesss you completely shut down, in other words if you are using windows and switch to Linux using the restart sequence, Windows WILL NOT always release those applications, and you may or may not have sound in Linux, or visa versa, as either windows or linux still has control over them, so when switching from one to another save yourself a headache and shut down and start up again. On another note, I am not sure how the grub (which stands for Grand Universal Bootloader) is installed, or whether or not the grub is installed on the windows partition or not, as windows will seek out a better performing bootloader and either disable or eliminate the windows loader. This happened to me on an old Windows 7 machine that I ran Windows and Linux on the same hard drive as described in this video, if for some reason you decide that you no longer want Linux in your computer and you decide to somehow remove it, BEWARE, you may or may not be able to boot windows, as when you remove Linux, you will also remove the grub, and if windows had decided to eliminate its own loader and use the linux bootloader ( which is a far better bootloader) you will not be able to boot windows, so if you decide you no longer want to use Linux,, just leave it alone, and let it stay where it is.
Thank you so much for bringing some light, it will definitely make it possible for me, a layperson, to go about installing my first Linux distribution on my PC!

Very patient and easy to follow. Used it on Windows 10 HP laptop to install Mint 18.3....everything works, but I am left with an issue: 1) during the install from USB, followed suggestion to use Third Party software, which brought up box to disable UEFI to allow that. Required establishing a password to disable, and said it would use same password later during install (I guess to re-enable?). Never saw that dialogue or anything like it again. So now I have this cryptic password with seemingly no use, and I'm not really sure what the status of my security is. Just a user, who doesn't understand UEFI or Third Party conflicts, but I understand password protection and am unsure what's been done here, nor why the dialogue never reappeared...or if it matters. Very good tutorial for windows users ! Slow and details with all windows alert stupid popups and program installation process. Might be of note if you redo the video when using the compadability test version and trying to install linux mint from there, Windows isn't detected (at least it was that way for me), and the keyboard selection is the second or third point now and not the last. Thank you for making the video, as something less than a beginner the explaination for the boot menu on the linux mint website was a bit lacking and threw me of as I then had no idea how to life start and all that. Thanks for your guidance. I installed linux mint side by window as u mentioned. I want ti to ask u that i now made bootable usb of linux can i install linux on any other pc directly with this bootable USB. Or i have to go step by step as before??

You should be good to go. :)

Great video with clear instructions which I was able to follow all the way through on my ageing ACER laptop. Everything went fine up to the point were I restarted the pc and ... Nothing! Machine just boots straight into Windows 10 as it previously did, no menu, nothing to say that Mint actually exists on the hard drive. I've gone into command prompt and entered the "displaybootmenu" but still no joy. Very disappointing. Any help appreciated.
I did everything mentioned until it got to the dialog screen saying it did not detect any other operating system would I like to erase all and install Linux Mint. Is this a defect in the new LinuxMint20?
While I m installing software it’s displaying a failed :parameter code 2 There is 3 option bottom of the msg Quit. Continue anyway. Cancel. Can you plz give me suggestion for this.
Although I haven’t tried to follow through yet I found this video the most complete and well presented one on Linux to date! Thank you. As my old computer doesn’t seem to be able to boot from a USB I have installed some software on a CD that makes this possible (again, not yet tried). I suppose there is no way to modify the BIOS to enable a boot from USB that you know of?
Great tutorial! Very convenient but the thing is, mine doesn't show the generic flash disk you are referring to. Is there anything important you missed on discussing?
I tried doing this on a devoted SSD (all others disconnected) and when I went to install I had to use "compatibility mode" to not get a glitched out screen and when I installed it and selected restart it said to remove the usb drive so I did and pressed enter and all I got was a message saying something about something failed ([0.350863] initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed)..... I'm in the process of re-trying the install again, same way...
If there is already partition made while installing windows 10 will it remain the same when I install linux mint?. Suppose I have partitioned my hard drive into 5 local drives ( C, D, E, F, G, H) and I have installed windows 10 on C and want to install linux mint on D and the other drives for personal use. Is it possible?
The best video I seen on installing Linux. The problem I am having is when I boot my PC and attempt to load LinuxMint on the bottom of the screen it say's (Attempted to Kill init ! ) keeps popping up. I have a 10 year old 32 bit HP Any idea what I need to do?
hey I love your video and your awesome explanation but for some reason I did all the steps and when I boot Linux mint it stay booting up I was able to run the program only one time and when it try to boots up from the USB flash drive it stay loading and nothing happen
Thanks for the comment, and sorry to hear you're having issues. So currently, when you try to boot Linux Mint, you see the Mint start-up screen, but it doesn't get past that to the login screen? And you're experiencing the same with the USB flash drive with Mint on it?
Got to the reboot bit and can't get my Sony Vaio to load anything other than windows Tried all the F keys suggested including some more I found suggested on the internet. Pity, but I don't have the technical ability to go further.
When I get to the "installation type" step it asks if "...I want to install alongside Windows 10-" I do want to install alongside Windows but my current OS is Windows 7. Would it be safe to go ahead and continue with that choice checked or will that make a difference? I've been searching forums and other YT vids for a long time and haven't found a definitive answer to this question yet. Would really appreciate some feedback!

As my old computer doesn’t seem to be able to boot from a USB I have installed some software on a CD that makes this possible (again, not yet tried). I suppose there is no way to modify the BIOS to enable a boot from USB that you know of?
you're good , please keep up, easy to follow
Great tutorial! Very convenient but the thing is, mine doesn't show the generic flash disk you are referring to. Is there anything important you missed on discussing?
I tried doing this on a devoted SSD (all others disconnected) and when I went to install I had to use "compatibility mode" to not get a glitched out screen and when I installed it and selected restart it said to remove the usb drive so I did and pressed enter and all I got was a message saying something about something failed ([0.350863] initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed)..... I'm in the process of re-trying the install again, same way...
Can someone tell me why I click on the USB flash drive and my screen goes black and it sounds like my computer's fan goes off
I want to ask,if I choose 2nd option erase all data on OS ,so will it effect the Hard drive local disk E or only it will erase local disc C ?
After set up Rufus with ISO, my USB boot option disappeared from my startup options (Lenovo ThinkCentre M58)...
Created another USB with FreeDOS and I could boot using USB again :-)
Excellente démonstration... Calme, efficace, même pour moi qui parle français 👍👍👍
Very easy to understand however it did not find the windows 10 OS aannd did not offer dual boot installation
Got to the reboot bit and can't get my Sony Vaio to load anything other than windows Tried all the F keys suggested including some more I found suggested on the internet. Pity, but I don't have the technical ability to go further.
Thanks for making a convenient and useful video on linux! Hope your effort become successful :)
Best tutorial ever so far. Thanks 👍
What should I do if it does not detect windows 10 during the installing phase and just wants me to erase the disk.
very well produced video, excellent narration, excellent step by step guide, thank you, I now have a dual boot machine!
Great - except the latest version of Rufus is quite different. I can't find my ISO image of Linux Mint...
Great work out there, it was so helpful!
Very glad you found it helpful! Enjoy Mint. :)
I can't thank you enough for this amazing video. THANK YOU!!!
Thank you very much. Happy to help! :)
Very clear and easy to follow thank you
So what is the usb for and how do u get back to windows ?
It's taking too much time to installing process...should I go with the fresh download?
