    Great series, I hope you finish uploading the final three videos. But also, I hope you start uploading on a more regular basis. Your videos are very well made. Your channel would grow if you uploaded more often.

    30:33 The operating system can offer or restrict certain functionality based on groups. So to be able to use hardware connected to COM ports (like programming Arduino or Raspberry Pi Pico devices), all the users who are supposed to have this capability would have to be added to the dialout group. Or...
    - to manage printer settings, you add the users to the lpadmin group
    - to use USB devices (USB storage, printers, etc) inside the VirtualBox virtual machines, you add the users to the vboxusers group
    ... etc

    AGAIN ... very helpful. I am binge-watching this. Just found your channel, and I feel much more comfortable now. It is arranged similarly to Windows, so it's not that intimatidating, after all.

    The groups thing does not offer much when using your own personal PC or laptop.
    But if you are, for example, a developer and your developer team has a Linux server that everyone uses remotely (through SSH for example), then the groups become useful since you can create a directory and files under it that the group has access to and everyone can work on them together. But if your group has a sub-group like maybe project leaders, then the project leaders can have their own directory and files that the other standard group members cannot access.
    Basically, if multiple people use the same PC or laptop, then the groups can give some privacy to certain directories and files.
    Like if a family uses only one PC and the users are mom, dad and 2 kids. Then the parents could have a "parents" group and protect everything from the kids with that group's permissions.

    • @kneekoo
      @kneekoo 5 місяців тому

      This is indeed a good use case. The other important functionality of groups is that you can restrict/allow functionality based on groups. Just like you would manage a firewall, you only allow the things that are important, and everything else is restricted by default. So if you want to program devices like Arduino, Raspberry Pi Pico and others, you need the dialout group. Or for accessto USB devices from a VirtualBox VM, you need vboxusers.

    I would like to switch to Linux but my biggest problem is that the fonts on any distro look awful on my internet browser. It is kinda blurry even though I install mscorefonts. Any idea?

    I have been using Linux Mint for some time and quite like it. In the v20.1 the printer is already set up after installation. This was good to see as in the past printers was always a problem in Linux. At first seemed OK but then I discovered I could not print a legal size paper. It looked fine in print preview but actually only prints as if the page is letter size. I have set everything every where and nothing fixes it. Linux Manjaro is the same. Printer is HP CP1025nw. Just tried Fedora 34 and would not print at all! Not even the built in test page. In fact it crashed Fedora 34 3 times. Printers have always been a weak part of Linux for decades. It's about time they got it right. If you can't print, the O/S is of little use. This is not the only printer I have had trouble with. By the way, although I would rather use Linux, Windows has no trouble with this or other printers so I'm stuck with Windows until this situation is fixed.

    Slightly off topic here, does anyone have a solution for the video stuttering on practically any platform, UA-cam, BitChute and so on... Including videos played on VLC. Is anybody else having this issue? If yes, do you have a solution, if so can you please share it with us? It is not my computer(s) I have three desktops and a laptop all have Mint installed on them and I am having the same issue on all of them. Some friends have the same problem, I have been scouring the internet trying to find a solution so far no luck, any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks

      I'm no expert but it could be the drivers aren't Linux compatible. I have a Motu M2 plugged into my laptop with powered speakers and it stutters a bit, like every few minutes there's a click, and a bit of stuttering. Listenable but not ideal. The Motu doesn't have linux drivers available. Worked good on Windows but after almost destroying my laptop, windows is gone.

    Thank you for this excellent video series! I really love your clear and logical presentation style, and your voice is very nice to listen to.
    I have a question... In Windows 7 I use the Ctrl key and the left mouse button to choose multiple files. I found out that in Linux Mint I need to press and hold both the Ctrl key and the Super key while left clicking to choose multiple (non-consecutive) files. Is there any way to change that so I only need to press and hold the Ctrl key, like in Windows? I couldn't find the option under Keyboard Shortcuts. (It's not a huge deal, but I still have to use a Windows computer occasionally and I prefer it to be consistent.)

      @fymlinux  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the positive feedback. Really appreciate it and happy to help! To answer your question, in my case, the default behavior for the Nemo File Manager is that when I press CTRL + Left-click to select multiple non-consecutive files or folders, it behaves exactly that way. I only have to press CTRL + Left-click -- no super key needed. Are you experiencing something different?

    • @blueskies1014
      @blueskies1014 4 роки тому

      @@fymlinux Oh, I'm surprised that you are able to use the CTRL + Left-click alone to select items without the Super key. I have to include all three, and from what I've read elsewhere I believe that is standard or at least common behavior in Linux Mint.
      I have my computer set to single-click instead of double-click, and I was hoping to also find a way to be able to highlight/select a file when I hover over it - which is also like Windows 7.

    Bad technique to teach newbees on cinnamon instead of MATE and making system changes before they know what they're doing. I advise newbees "don't change a thing" ...... no way johnny on the street can improve what the creator of the system did produce without skruing things up.

    • @thegardenofeatin5965
      @thegardenofeatin5965 Рік тому

      I disagree. Anything you can do through the system settings menu isn't going to brick the machine, and I don't see MATE as any more noob friendly than Cinnamon.
