Amen! Coming from a resident of Kansas. I first started hunting in the 90’s. My family did not own land but we had incredible access and actually observed 190 and 200 inch bucks! But, we noticed the change that took place somewhere around the early 2000’s. The floodgates opened to NR hunters and outfitters. By 2010 we lost all access to the land I grew up hunting to outfitters, NR leasing practices, and NR purchasing sections of land. From a resident of Kansas, do not let something you cherish and value get bought out. Finally, don’t let them downgrade the value of what you/we cherish as hunters. It’s not just “deer” or “land” or “hunting”! Please don’t let them downgrade the quality of hunting of Iowa.
Iowa gun season has always been outside the rut. It had nothing to do with when the rut was, it was placed where it was due to when the farmers could hunt after harvest. The only thing that really matters in Iowa is the post rut firearms season. When you don't have guns in the woods during rut it allows a ton of bu ks to get older each year.
Agree with all but the old head of the DNR gave a great presentation of the history of iowa. They picked the late gun for TWO reasons: 1) yes, farmers. 2) they were aware, back then - with some articles, presentations & history folks can dig into…. Firearms AFTER the rut would help with getting more bucks to maturity thus having bigger bucks in state. Minor points but worth mention. Clearly the bigger point is now other states can see the results!! This is what happens when u don’t have guns in middle of rut. Younger hunters understand this!!!
In Michigan the crossbows really pounding away at deer. Lot of hunter tag out on 2 bucks opening day bow season. Some of these crossbows people are shooting at 80 plus yards. All for moving Michigan deer season to friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving. Maybe 1 buck a season.
I live and hunt in Mississippi. Its become a circus with all these ignorant game laws that make it so easy to kill deer. Crossbows, Velvet season, no more primitive weapons, extended seasons, feeders, cell cameras and backyard shooting deer, everyone is brainwashed into thinking there's too many deer, Frankly, it's hard to even get a buck to 2.5 yrs old!
My big beef with Iowa is that I cannot use my nice traditional deer rifle, a Sako L579 Forester in soft-shooting .243 Winchester, during "normal" hunting seasons. This .35+ rifle bore stuff, as in .35 Whelen, etc, is a bunch of crap. Hawkeye game regulators, hating old American 20th century traditions, rule out classic American guns like the Savage Model 99 lever-action to boot. All these traditional American deer rifle cartridges are held off until a possible January doe hunt in the snow.
.35 & up is their stepping stones to get high powers in our deer season. Which would degrade this state. I own high powers. I like them. I don’t want them in this fragile system of iowa. It will ruin this state. Yes- the .35 & up is a joke. Brought to u by…. The Iowa Firearms Coalitian lobbyists!!!!!
