Bonnie is singing one of guitar virtuoso & singer/songwriter Richard Thompson’s songs. There is a video on UA-cam of his performing this song with her. His music writing and playing is phenomenal. Thompson was in the forefront of folk rock scene in England when he was 18 years old and a member of the band Fairport Convention. If you can locate Richard Thompson performing his “1952 Vincent Black Lightening”. He is ranked in the top 100 guitarist ever by Rolling Stone in both the acoustic and electric guitar. Bonnie and he have performed together a number of times.
Bonnie's cover of Richard Thompson's "When the Spell is Broken" is heart rending and beautiful. There is an excellent tribute album to Richard Thompson, "Beat the Retreat", featuring Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, REM, X, Five Blind Boys, Shawn Colvin and David Byrne (and more). And no, Richard Thompson is not dead.
For me, Bonnie is like a brain surgeon using her talents to stimulate whatever section of emotion she believes you need help with. I simply adore her. ❤
This is a good song to remind us that she's the daughter of Broadway musical star John Raitt, a leading man who could belt like crazy. They did a beautiful duet called "Hey There", backed by the Boston Pops Orchestra . Really heartwarming to see them sharing the stage !
Such a beautiful song of love and devotion. Written by Richard Thompson, but no one can interpret a song like Bonnie. May not be one of her greatest hits, but surely a favorite of those who know her larger body of work.
There are a number of excellent covers - it is so difficult to screw up a really really good song. Alison Krauss, Mary Black, Dave Gilmour... and of course several versions with Richard Thompson.
I think the thing about Bonnie Raitt is that she is a blues musician mainly. I have found the blues can get you to a lot of hard times. They don't make me feel depressed it's just like someone else is able to express in words what you yourself can't find the words to say.😅😢😅
Someone, in the comments here, said this was an Irish folk song. That is WRONG. "Dimming of the Day" was written by Richard Thompson and performed with his then-wife Linda Thompson on their 1975 album Pour Down Like Silver. An acoustic version can be found on Richard Thompson's 1996 album Acoustic Classics. P.S. There is a video of Bonnie doing an acoustic version with Richard Thompson playing and singing the harmony.
I've probably said this on other recordings from Bonnie, but I saw her recently in concert and her voice is every bit as good now as it was 20 to 30 years ago. She is, without a doubt, one of my top three singers/performers ever. She's great with the bottleneck guitar and a really good pianist too.
My fellow Northern Irish countryman Paul Brady to her left, Incredibly talented Singer songwriter in his own right. Check out his song "Nothing but the same old story"
One of my favorites of hers! She’s amazing! I’ve seen her several times live and it’s always an awesome experience! I love that You’ve found her. Thanks Sebs! Good one❤!
There are a lot of beautiful versions of this beautiful song, but this is one of the best. Here are Richard and Linda Thompson, from back when the song was relatively new: ua-cam.com/video/s6kjCd7QRbw/v-deo.html
I'm a huge fan of your channel Sebs! I want to say that first and foremost. I JUMPED on this one the second I saw what song you were reacting to. I first heard "Dimming of the Day" w/Richard & Linda Thompson on the soundtrack for "The Divine Secrets of the Yaya Sisterhood". In my opinion it's one of the greatest love songs I've ever heard. Thank you so much for listening to it 👍
Bonnie is a gem. Beautifully performed. I had never heard her sing this one. I first heard it years ago by Larry Rice with the great Herb Pedersen sing harmony. I liked that a lot but loved this one.
There's another good video of Bonnie performing this song. It is a duo with Richard Thomson, the composer of this beautiful song. In both videos Bonnie shows her vocal virtuosity.
You'd love some of Bonnie's early stuff. I'd love to see you review "Give It Up Or Let Me Go" or "Women Be Wise". Let you see Bonnie as the bad-ass blues woman she is.
Ohhh yes @lindamcmahan977 …fantastic choice! Of course Bonnie sings unbelievably on this track (like she’s talking from experience 😉) but the guitar playing?? Wow, next level!
I know you will appreciate the Tedeschi-Trucks Band. Married couple heading a great band… the voice of Susan Tedeschi and guitar of Derek Trucks. Studio version of “Anyhow” and live version of “Angel of Harlem”.
Oh, the goosebumps! I hadn't heard this before. I think, some performers strip down their sound to where all you hear is the honesty. Especially since the 1980's a more produced sound has become the norm, which only makes these artists stand out even more.
If you like this, I highly recommend an album of Richard Thompson covers called "Beat the Retreat." It's from 1994, so probably hard to find, but it's awesome. Bonnie Raitt covers a different song on that album ("When the Spell is Broken").
You Must see Bonnie performing with her Father. See where a small part of this talent comes from. ua-cam.com/video/XBgSg_u2llg/v-deo.htmlsi=islGG7t4xbW-m7vc
This is an Irish folk song, several Celtic music groups have recorded it. Bonnie definitely does it justice. I first it heard it from Cherish The Ladies and Deirdre Connolly.

The singer harmonising with Bonnie is Paul Brady a very well known Irish singer.......check him out !!!
He's brilliant..
@@aaronherbison7316 agreed....saw him live back in the 1980s in Dublin
Your passion and response to this amazing song defines you. Respect.😊
Bonnie Raitt’s voice brings me home.
First time I saw Bonnie in concert was at an old bowling alley in Connecticut. It's been around fifty, 50 years. She's had me ever since.
Such a beautiful song of love and devotion. Written by Richard Thompson, but no one can interpret a song like Bonnie. May not be one of her greatest hits, but surely a favorite of those who know her larger body of work.

I had the pleasure of seeing her live with Jackson Browne so many years ago.
I was at their show in San Francisco together.

Love Bonnie Raitt....
Richard Thompson is also still around. One of the best guitarists you'll ever hear.
Bonnie is a gem among gems. Fun fact Prince wanted to record some song with her but their schedules ever made it happen
My fellow Northern Irish countryman Paul Brady to her left, Incredibly talented Singer songwriter in his own right. Check out his song "Nothing but the same old story"
That is our humanity shining out of us in answer to that magic that is music ❤
One of my favorites of hers! She’s amazing! I’ve seen her several times live and it’s always an awesome experience! I love that You’ve found her. Thanks Sebs! Good one❤!
one of my fav's of her!
Gorgeous tune, harmonies, and guitar work!

Favorite voice ever. Not saying best, but favorite.

Paul Brady on guitar and backing vocals ❤
Bonnie is so spectacular. You need to hear _I Can't Make You Love Me_ with Bruce Hornsby and his magnificent piano skill.
There's another good video of Bonnie performing this song. It is a duo with Richard Thomson, the composer of this beautiful song. In both videos Bonnie shows her vocal virtuosity.

Also, from her debut album Since I Fell for You. Not badass, but pure blues torch song.
Hi Sebs would love for you to enjoy Bonnie Raitt singing LOVE ME LIKE A MAN . PEACE AND LOVE MY FRIEND AND ✌️♥️🙏🏻🙏🏻🎸
Ohhh yes @lindamcmahan977 …fantastic choice! Of course Bonnie sings unbelievably on this track (like she’s talking from experience 😉) but the guitar playing?? Wow, next level!
This song never fails to affect me.

O Paul Brady such quality musicians ❤ thankyou
Dude, that was stunning! Great musicians are doing what they do best. Love the modulation of their voices from the G chord to the C chord. So good.
Richard Thompson uses key changes during songs quite a bit.
Say her in 78 in the Berkshires with Freebo. She's aged like a fine wine.
Oh, the goosebumps! I hadn't heard this before.

Great choice!
Just give a wee mention to Paul Brady, superb harmonies
Bonnie Raitt is my #2 musician for having all of her albums on a desert island. Dire Straits #1, Eagles #3
You might want to check out Bonnie's duet with Richard Thompson on this one.
You would really enjoy Eva Cassidy singing Fields of Gold. A live solo performance. A voice like no other.
If you like this, I highly recommend an album of Richard Thompson covers called "Beat the Retreat." It's from 1994, so probably hard to find, but it's awesome. Bonnie Raitt covers a different song on that album ("When the Spell is Broken").
Always hang out with yal
Obe of my favorites. Another great one is Angel from Montgomery by John Prine.
Hope you have a great day peace out ✌️
The Richard and Linda Thompson version is even better.
PEOPLE ARE ALSO WANTING TO HEAR BONNIE RAITT SING LOVE ME LIKE A MAN
Richard Thompson has written and sung some beautiful songs but so has Linda Thompson, his ex wife. You should check her out.
This needs to be your night list Yea from 67 memee
David Gilmour (the guitarist of Pink Floyd who you seem to like too) made a beautiful cover of that song - check it out.
we are seeing you
Alison Krause also has an excellent version of this.
Love Bonnie, have you dose pasty Klein?.
Try David Gilmour's version. Also beautiful
You Must see Bonnie performing with her Father. See where a small part of this talent comes from.

There is a better performance where she sings with Richard Thompson, the writer.
This is an Irish folk song, several Celtic music groups have recorded it. Bonnie definitely does it justice. I first it heard it from Cherish The Ladies and Deirdre Connolly.

Channel has become boring, depressing and lame ! C'mon man pick it up. Let's have some fun!!
David Gilmour did a very good version of the song
