I just read on wikipedia that Maris never even listened to Hackman talking. Was just trying to make each shot.

Maris was originally from Latvia and even though he looks like a terrific shooter during the film, he was a not a good player or a great shooter either in his own life: this is one of the reasons why this film is magic
