The entire film is about evolution, change and comebacks. The earlier version of Coach Dale in the film would have benched Jimmy for wanting to change the play; now, in the final, crucial moments, he lets his star player (and, really, all the players) overrule him and accepts it without protest. The final step in his evolution, and the final step in his -- and everyone's -- comeback.
And as good as the movie is, if the suits running the studio had allowed them to keep the deleted scenes it would have been even better. The ones explaining Buddy's sudden reappearance, fleshing out the relationship between Hackman and Hersey, the interaction of the coach with his friend's (Cletus)family, etc. All gone just so the movie would be twenty or thirty minutes shorter.

DEFINITELY one of THE most inspiring films of ALL TIME. And not merely among sports films..... of ALL movies. And better yet because it is based on a true story ....
I am retired military. For the civilians in the audience, this movie is a fantastic example of why I love teamwork. I don't care if I sweep the floors or drive the team school bus, teamwork can overcome any obstacle. Apollo 13 is another example.
The man is truly missed. Probably my second favorite composer next to John Williams. Star Trek,Planet of the apes,First Knight and especially his score to Rudy.
It is a love letter to all of us that played HS basketball and loved the game with so much passion that movies like this can still make us tear up. I never was freer or happier than when I was playing basketball in my late twenties at the old out door court all the ballers would head to each day. Now in my 60s I can still do all those things in my head and even make shots when I grab the ball and go over to the school.
There's no question that the triumph of the ending brings on the tears. But when Barbara Hershey and Gene Hackman lock eyes at the very end of this scene its overwhelming. They truly love each other and there is no greater triumph than that.
I think this scene makes me as well as others so emotional because that shot made a town and made people’s lives worthwhile. If you’re from a small town you’ll understand what I mean by that. It’s hard to comprehend how simple life is in a small town and unfortunately those people never get to see the real world for what it is. Basketball and hard work is their way of life. That shot was for all of the small Midwestern towns that never got the chance to be known all across the country. That shot was for the people who lived their entire lives in one little town with one stop light. That shot was for you and me, it brings hope and the chance of prosperity. Jimmy Chitwood did that for us, he made it and that lives within all of us, someday we hope we can make it.
@@bigerrn9404 like they’re going to have a parade & a day off to celebrate. It’s the “Super Bowl” for some towns & this is their time to shine & prove to the world that it takes a team.
I'm from a small town and the police escorts out of town with townspeople lining both sides of the road going through downtown. Very seldom do we make a playoff run but it's always special when we do.
I love this movie. My dad introduced it to me when I was a kid and we'd always watch it together so it makes me think of him. And I was born and raised in a small farming town in Illinois, so this movie definitely gives me a feeling of home. No other movie I've ever seen has more accurately encapsulated the small town Midwest. It just gives you that warm, homey kind of feeling.

Just a fantastic, heartwarming film. The best sports movie ever made. The acting of Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper and Gene Hackman carries the day. It is rare that Gene Hackman is outshone in a film, but Dennis Hoppers performance as Shooter is Academy Award worthy. The man was ripped blind of his statuette by whatever clueless wonders were responsible. His scene with his son in the Hospital is a study of complete absolution. When he said, "About the other njght," his boy immediately answers, "No that don't matter dad. You're going to get better." It could squeeze tears from a granite stone. A beautiful tale of redemption and second chances.
I went to LEBANON High School in the mid 70's. Steve and Brian Walker were the go to player's on the LEBANON Tiger's. Lebanon is also the home of the Greatest pure shooter in Indiana High School basketball history "Rick Mount" The Walker Brothers were a one two punch. The Coach was Jim Rosinstihl. A under study of Tony Hinkle of Butler. Jim played for Tony in college. The Tiger's went to Semi State a couple of times. But never won the big one. Both Brothers went on to play at Purdue. But faded away into Indiana High School basketball Histroy. Those were some great days indeed! Go! Tigers! Shawn
As a former coach, my favorite part of that scene is when notorious control freak Norman Dale releases the reins and lets the kids dictate the last shot. Coaches often think players asserting themselves and challenging the coach is a bad thing. It is the best thing. The game is not about the coaches.
Players challenging the coach is the best thing? What a knucklehead. I can’t imagine a single high school, college, or pro coach agreeing with you, ESPECIALLY when a player challenges them in the middle of a game. Hollywood threw in that scene for dramatic effect. Pure fantasy.
If you rewatch the movie a few times, you'll realize Coach Dale was never really a control freak. He might have given that impression during the first game by forcing his player to pass 4 times before a shot, and benching Rade when Rade ignored his instruction. But his intention was never about control nor about a 4-pass-before-shot offense. It was always about building up his players' skills, abilities, and confidence, and getting them to play as a disciplined 5-man team. By asking his players to pass 4 times before a shot and sticking with that offense for the first game, he was testing whether they could handle that assignment and stick with it, even when it didn't seem like it was working. Rade failed that test and was benched, even though he scored a few times. At the same time he was building up his players, he was also building up his coaching staff's abilities and confidence too. Think about it this way: if Coach Dale was such a control freak, why would he ever intentionally get kicked out of a game and let Shooter (who was temporarily off the bottle) finish coaching the game for them? Dale saw Shooter's knowledge and abilities as a plus, and the need to repair Shooter's relationship with his son as necessary. So the last play wasn't about Coach Dale giving up control. Rather, it was because his players developed enough along the season to be trusted to make that last play themselves, and Coach Dale recognized it.
Absolutely an amazing movie along with the natural. It pulls so hard at your heart. It's a wonderful wholesome movie. My mom is a Hoosier and now I know why she has always loved basketball.
I grew up playing sports from the age of 5 , I'm 58 now and no matter how often I watch this I still get chills and the tears after watching the faces of these guys and the emotions they must have felt in that moment . This is movie magic at it's best
At 54, I was able to watch this movie in 86 when it came out, and God knows how many times since. I would guess that many who love this movie are from a small town, as am I. When you beat a much bigger school, there just aren't words to express the feeling you get. This final scene does just that, with only three words that say it all, I'll make it. The music and crowd reaction after fills that emotion every time. It brings a tear, every time. And a smile of that memory as fresh as if it was yesterday. EVERY TIME.
One of my favorite sports films. I just love how the Coach, who has been so important in getting the team this far, now has so much confidence and trust in his players, that he relinquishes his authority and allows the team to call the final play
I worked with a guy in the 1980s who was his early fifties. He was in the stands during the final game. I was telling him about the movie, and then, when he told me about the final moments of the game, he was all choked up and had tears in his eyes. Damn.
It's so weird to me, coming across the movie Hoosiers the other day and this pivotal scene in the movie. Did you know the kids in the stands and everyone cheering as extras is an actual High School Class. MY OWN! And following the filming, My School went on to win the actual State championship. Bishop Chatard High School vs Broad Ripple High School. We BCHS WON! Gene Hackmen (who was actually raised for a time Hoosier (Indiana) Resident) stayed to watch the game. All those faces are my classmates, Class of 1986. Sadly, many of them are gone now. But they will live on forever in this film as well as actual moment of time. A time which though was filled with tragedy and loss. Nevertheless, It was the happiest time of my life. A age of discovery of who I was to become. The Movie Hoosiers BEAUTIFULLY capture another thing. The State of Indiana's obsession for Basketball, which part of me also loves as a Hoosier.
This is the movie that made me want to play basketball growing up. Kobe Bryant might be my favorite basketball player, but Jimmy Chitwood has my basketball line ever, “I’ll make it”. I know the generations now like Coach Carter or Glory Road and both are good films, but this one movie paints basketball for what the game truly is about. Shooting, that’s the first thing we all learn, fundamentals explain our ball handling and passing, and defense how do we stop the opponent from scoring. This is the first true sports movie of David vs Goliath. And btw, the soundtrack of this whole movie has the best sports soundtrack movie all sports movies I’ve heard. Lastly, the ending is great. It summarizes everything in the movie. Basketball, farming, and school. Not better way to end the movie with the picture of the state champions in Indiana of the 1952-1953 basketball team and head coach Norman Dale say the best quote in basketball at the very end of the movie and tell his players, he loves them. Hands down the best basketball film I have ever been introduced to by my father!!
As a coach I put a 2nd string shooter in close to the end of the game. He asked me, "What do you want me to do coach?" I told him "Play the game". The shooter drained a couple of three pointers and we won by 5 points. A Coach has never won a game.
Gene Hackman's acting in that scene...when Jimmy says "I'll make it," and in one second, Hackman's eyes convey the entirety of his character's journey throughout the movie, the fear that he had to let go of his ego as a coach, looking into Jimmy's eyes and finally believing in someone other than himself. Masterclass of acting.
Rolling Ormond actually when they go from the celebrating on the court to the scene in the fields we can only guess is in November is when we know how epic this really is, because its what hangs with us for all that time...
At 0:59 coach Dale asks "what's the matter with you ?" ....You can see the fear and uncertainty in the boys faces at that time . Got to love how Jimmy stepped up and said "I'll make it"....That gave everyone the confidence and took the pressure off.
They looked at him strange. As the assistant head coach had to take over. After the coach got ejected on purpose. Which the assistant seen in the hospital called the very same play. The Picket Fence. To win the game.. That was the reason....
I always thought it had something to do with the Dennis Hopper character and they knew it was a gimmick and that it might not work twice-in-a-row. If their opponent had scouted them.
Their home gym is in the old Knightstown, IN high school; my dad was the band director back in the day. I was like, 5 at the time and used to play in th gym when they had pep band practice. Those small school gyms were just like this one, and absolute snake pits if you were the visiting team. The crowd was within arms length and showed no love and no mercy.
the gym reminds me of one of the schools we played in high school, Gillespie, IL. It was a literal pit like in the movie. There was no love lost at all between them and my high school, Virden.
This was an incredible movie. When I first saw this movie the audience stood up and cheered. I believe that was the same year that Indiana won the NCAA basketball championship.
It was. And as an aside the Oscars were held the same night as the Nation Title Game. That year(1987) was the last time the NCAA title game tipped off in the 8:00 PM ET hour. Now they don't have to worry about the Oscars competing since the Oscars were moved up to late February.
When I first saw the movie and Dennis Hopper's name appeared, I thought, Ow wow, he's going to play something weird/edgy. In fact, in the previous/same year as "Hoosiers", he appeared in "Blue Velvet" ("Now it's dark!!!"), "Texas Chainsaw Massacre II", "Straight to Hell", and "Riders of the Storm". So I guess he's in this film for "a rest"!
This movie is so wonderful, especially the closing scenes where Hickory wins the championship. I’ve told them not to chop onions during those scenes, but they don’t listen to me, lol. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
this movie is a masterpiece and should have cleaned up 10 Oscars it was so perfectly made..so many great moments..best musical score I have heard in a movie ever as well
This is one of the great sports movies, based on a true story. It is pretty realistic, with the clothing and uniforms looking very 50's like. Gene Hackman played the coach very well, and the movie had a little love interest as well. I got a chuckle, though, the last nineteen seconds of the game lasted 36 (I know, it was in slow motion). Had to watch this clip in honor of April Madness and Virginia's win
Butler playing Duke in 2010 couldnt have been more perfect of real life Hooisers if they won. Heck they even played the Championship in Indiana of all places. This championship game in the movie ironically was filmed at Butler Univerisity gym.
I saw this movie when I was stationed in Germany. It blew me away and I went and saw it the next night at the base theater. It was the very first movie that I ever saw a second time at the movie theater.
The ending where everyone is kissing is why sports matter... I always wanted to have this moment and I was lucky enough to have it. The hugs and kisses between friends and family is the memory that lasts. The other thing about this movie, is winning only MATTERS if you do it right.
Love this movie. I was a teenager when it was filmed and I was there all four nights they filmed it at Hinkle Fieldhouse. I got to run out on the court when the final shot was made. And yes, he did make it the first time we ran out, but missed it a couple other times but we still had to run out. It was frickin awesome.

When that kid is dribbling at the end, and they show a photo of the team, it gets me every time.
The photo is awesome but I need someone to explain to me why Coach Butcher is not in that photo. He was the assistant coach right?
@@antonio706ga That is true. They also could have had Shooter and the original assistant, the Principal.
After all these years.when Jimmy says I'll make it.i still get goose bumps
DEFINITELY one of THE most inspiring films of ALL TIME. And not merely among sports films..... of ALL movies. And better yet because it is based on a true story ....
I am retired military. For the civilians in the audience, this movie is a fantastic example of why I love teamwork. I don't care if I sweep the floors or drive the team school bus, teamwork can overcome any obstacle. Apollo 13 is another example.
Redemption, acceptance, and second chances. What an uplifting and great movie. We so very much need a 2019 version of this to inspire the masses.
I agree with the sentiment, but the movie need not be remade-it just needs to be watched once again by the younger generations. It’s perfect.
This sequence its so memorable because of Jerry Goldsmith's outstanding score.
The man is truly missed. Probably my second favorite composer next to John Williams. Star Trek,Planet of the apes,First Knight and especially his score to Rudy.
Hoosiers is a love letter to Indiana's basketball heritage.
I think you may be right David
SLYSPYHIWAY90 He is abso-fuckin-lutely right.
Hoosiers is a GEM.
It is also a love letter between a father and son.
No better way to put it. Spot on...
Love this movie I've been watching it ever since 1986 what a classic
+Katie Williams I always bust it out once or twice a year about this time.
Love how Coach let the guys change his mind with the last play...Shows how far they all came since the start of Coach's tenure...
This is what I always take away from this scene as well. They earned his trust, and when they as a team disagreed with their coach, he listened.
Touché
In small towns, High Schools are the main focal point. You win a state championship in any sport, it is a big deal.
The musical score and the radio call help make the scene one of the best.
Hilliard Gates (1915-1996) , the radio announcer for the final shot was considered a "Founding Father of Indiana Sports Broadcasting" and called the 1954 state championship game between Milan and Muncie Central that the movie is based on. indianabroadcastpioneers.org/hilliard-gates/
I am pretty sure that was Hilliard Gates, a legend in the Fort Wayne area.
This movie is fir all the small towns out there in the middle of no where that will always breed the biggest dreamers with the biggest hearts
Brings tears to my eyes. There are a lot of great ones, but this one for me will always be the greatest sports movie ever made.
This scene will never stop giving me chills
Geez, what a stupid take. We get it, you're Gen Z and think you were born knowing everything. So why do you all know nothing?
Jimmy had the hot hand and put the team on his back.
They did it respectfully. Many of todays young athletes demand their own way.
When she looks at him after the win and the happiness, doesnt get better than that!
When Chitwood says 'I'll make it...' chills. Love that movie. Love that story.
Absolutely an amazing movie along with the natural. It pulls so hard at your heart. It's a wonderful wholesome movie. My mom is a Hoosier and now I know why she has always loved basketball.
I see the cornfield, and I imagine life moving on as they become farmers thinking of the glory days as 18 year olds reminiscing later in life.
I grew up playing sports from the age of 5 , I'm 58 now and no matter how often I watch this I still get chills and the tears after watching the faces of these guys and the emotions they must have felt in that moment . This is movie magic at it's best
One of the most inspiring sports movies ever.
Gene Hackman is truly an amazing actor!
this scene gives me chills every time😢
At 54, I was able to watch this movie in 86 when it came out, and God knows how many times since.
EVERY TIME.
You know how good you have to be for the entire team to be like nah we’re not running that, get the ball to MJ and gtfo the way lol
And I was thinking Larry😅😅😅
The State of Indiana's obsession for Basketball, which part of me also loves as a Hoosier.
thAt is aweworthy background.
BIG congrats to you 🏆
if this scene doesn't make your eyes water your not human..
Hollywood will never make a movie like this ever again..
You know it's based on a true story right?
Obvious Stone Hearted Troll is Way too Obvious..
LMAO, very funny!
Remember the Titans with Denzel ranks up there with this movie
Charles Surber I’m sure the movie based on the 2016 Cubs will be a doozy.
"There's more to the game than shooting! There's fundamentals of defense!"
It all starts with the fundamentals :) What a movie.
Great defense makes great offense.
Transition.
We're going to play my way. And my way is hard .
As a coach I put a 2nd string shooter in close to the end of the game. He asked me, "What do you want me to do coach?" I told him "Play the game". The shooter drained a couple of three pointers and we won by 5 points.
A Coach has never won a game.
Great movie! The music and acting was awesome and flawless! Gene Hackman is one of the greatest actors ever.
This movie will last for decades but Jerry Goldsmiths score will make it last forever. RIP!
Hackman is truly one of a kind. I miss him.
The cutting of the sound to just the orchestration when they win is magnificent; shows how they will all become ghosts but this victory remains.
Rolling Ormond--Not bad, friend. Cheers.
Rolling Ormond actually when they go from the celebrating on the court to the scene in the fields we can only guess is in November is when we know how epic this really is, because its what hangs with us for all that time...
One of the greatest scenes of all time. With a magnificent score by the master Jerry Goldsmith.
At 0:59 coach Dale asks "what's the matter with you ?" ....You can see the fear and uncertainty in the boys faces at that time . Got to love how Jimmy stepped up and said "I'll make it"....That gave everyone the confidence and took the pressure off.
A coach's dream to have a player say those words(I'll make it.), because the confidence is more than half the battle.
They looked at him strange. As the assistant head coach had to take over. After the coach got ejected on purpose. Which the assistant seen in the hospital called the very same play. The Picket Fence. To win the game..
That was the reason....
Or Larry bird telling kc to give him the ball and everyone else get the hell out of the way
I always thought it had something to do with the Dennis Hopper character and they knew it was a gimmick and that it might not work twice-in-a-row. If their opponent had scouted them.
You guys have it all wrong: the team WANTED Jimmy to take that last shot; and Jimmy knew it.
EXCELLENT movie! Went to see this in 6th grade/1986. Still one of my favs!
That energy is just awesome
This was an incredible movie. When I first saw this movie the audience stood up and cheered. I believe that was the same year that Indiana won the NCAA basketball championship.
Best movie
It was. And as an aside the Oscars were held the same night as the Nation Title Game. That year(1987) was the last time the NCAA title game tipped off in the 8:00 PM ET hour. Now they don't have to worry about the Oscars competing since the Oscars were moved up to late February.
You're close. Movie was released in 1986. IU Hoosiers won it the following year. Still their last title to this day unfortunately
@@nickyd5341 Movie was released during the 1986-87 season.(I saw it on the Sunday before the NCAA title game)
It just never gets old. I had to reheat my breakfast to watch something I’ve seen too many times to count, but it was totally worth it.
Dennis Hopper jumping on the bed at the hospital gets me every time. Lol
I argue that it is way up there among his greatest acting performances. In fact, he got a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
RIP
The best sports movie of all time! And the music captures the spirit of the movie......I love you guys.
This movie is so wonderful, especially the closing scenes where Hickory wins the championship. I’ve told them not to chop onions during those scenes, but they don’t listen to me, lol. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
How in the world can you not like this? What is the matter with you 90 folks. This is Americana at its best. I get chills everytime.
I love this movie and the music during the games is awesome.
this movie is a masterpiece and should have cleaned up 10 Oscars it was so perfectly made..so many great moments..best musical score I have heard in a movie ever as well
The ending is so beautiful. What a movie!
One of the best movies ever!
It's March Madness time, so I had to pull this clip up, and sure enough, the tears came rolling down. What a beautiful story this movie told.
Coached my sons in youth sports. Always had that kid that would stare a hole in you. He always got the ball, no matter the outcome.
Butler playing Duke in 2010 couldnt have been more perfect of real life Hooisers if they won. Heck they even played the Championship in Indiana of all places. This championship game in the movie ironically was filmed at Butler Univerisity gym.
The real life state final was played in the same gym
Super great movie. Loosely based on a real event - well written, directed and produced. Wonderful acting. Same directors and producers of Rudy.
great sports movie that captures so well life in small town America during the 1950's.
Greatest sports film ever. Bar none. The music, cinematography, basketball choreography, acting, writing. All of it.
How can anyone not get goosebumps watching this?
Love this movie. I was a teenager when it was filmed and I was there all four nights they filmed it at Hinkle Fieldhouse. I got to run out on the court when the final shot was made. And yes, he did make it the first time we ran out, but missed it a couple other times but we still had to run out. It was frickin awesome.
In real life Bobby Plump was the shooter. He is a good guy and it was an honor to meet him and shake his hand.
Yes my Dad's favorite game of the tourney over the years. He played at Zionsville in the 30s.
