One of my favorite parts is when his "star player" isn't listening to him. So, he benches him. Oh that we'd have youth coaches be willing to humble athletes like that again.
Every time I see this scene, just about everyone I know in general, especially with me leading of course, claps along in rhythm with these guys, and I throw in the “Let’s Go” along in there. 😤😤💪🏻🏀
"If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be"! This line stuck to me as an 8 year old kid, and has carried me throughout my adult life.
As the father of a film editor I love the fact that Hackman thought this 3 hour movie was a disaster, until he saw the edited 2 hour version and realized it was brilliant.
"Hail! To Southport High" was written by SHS alumna Doris (Shannon) Schlensker in the summer of 1932, just before her senior year. It was used in the film because it was an original composition and did not use the tune of a copyrighted college fight song. When I was a student at Southport, Mrs. Schlensker was a secretary in the Guidance Office.
This is a speech about life! Remembering the fundamentals, putting your effort and concentration to playing to your potential! My stepdad sat me down when i was 6 years old and made me watch this movie! I will always carry this scene with me. Im 33 years old now. I went through 3 major career changes. 7 years as a teacher and basketball coach. 3 years as a bread baker and restaurant manager, and the last 3 years as a car painter. Rose to the top in all 3 fields, and this speech applies to them all. Focus on fundamentals, and perform to your potential. Theres nothing you cant accomplish if you do those things. Literally you can do anything that you desire to do! Its in the want, its in the try!
The movie takes place in Indiana. In Indiana, basketball is everything. It’s like a religion there, and still is to this day. The flagship university in the state is Indiana University. The school’s team name is the “Hoosiers.” For a long time now, pretty much anyone who plays basketball in the state of Indiana is called a “Hoosier,” even if they have nothing to do with the university. The sport, the state, and the university have all become synonymous over the years. That’s why the movie is called “Hoosiers.” Because all these people in it are basketball players and coaches in the state of Indiana.
Best sport movie of all time
Agreed!!! Love Hoosiers!!!
Absolutely.
Youngblood, Vision Quest, RAD!, Rudy, Hoosiers, Breaking Away (also filmed in Indiana), The Natural, A League of Their Own all in the Top 🎱 ;-)

This speech is not only motivational but true in sports as in life!

"And remember what got you here"---(I STILL get SHIVERS hearing that!!)
It's like Valpo versus Ole Miss in the NCAAs! ;-)

Great scene from a classic movie. Gene Hackman was the best guy to play coach.
Dennis Hopper should have won an oscar for his role.

Simple. Honest. Hey let's just play our best and see what happens. This is how an underdog gets fired up.
He looks like Bill O'Reilly
“I’m sure playing for the state championship would be beyond your wildest dreams, so let’s just keep it there”…
What an amazing coach..

The fight song you can faintly hear in the background is from my alma mater, Southport High School in Indianapolis.

April 2024, this film is currently free on UA-cam. Take advantage while you can, boys.
Perfect
Not to spoil it, but they end up losing the game 164-18.
I love the role of Jimmy in this movie. “I’ll make it”.
Theo Von & Tim Dillon brought me here.
My coaches growing up were like this.
the part about the fancy clothes hits HARD, it's about what's inside.
So true
