I was mowing the lawn listening to Spotify. My song list ran out and this came on randomly. I'm not a lyric guy, I like guitar. But I had to stop and listen to this a few times before I could keep mowing. Those lyrics just drew me in, and as a musician I can relate.
Great song by a great band and song writers. Isbell is doing very well on his own and with 400 Unit, and love his stuff. Glad that Patterson & Cooley are still working together well. Chemistry still at work. English Oceans and American Band show they may even be getting better with age. Just great!
I went stumblin through the fog tryin to find a reason for the things I told her. She woke up Sunny-side down and I was still thinkin I was to proud to flip her over.
.. and it might surprise you, but i'm a prairie boy from Saskatchewan, Canada and this stuff is gold to me too! I LOVE THIS BAND, please tour canada sometime. :)
Hell Man everyone one stage are Monster writers !!! (personally think Isbell's the best Guitarist AND writer) but it's like whats better Jack or Jim Beam .. all personal opinion, Patterson is a killer at it all too .. (but yeah cooley is a badass)
I completely get where BOTH of you are coming from. I can see the tie-in to The Smiths with the whole literary rock thing. The Smiths music got eaten up by hipsters and people of that sort while the country and indie crowds now seem to be embracing the Truckers. I'd now like the time to point out that Cooley and Isbell are easily the best two singers in the band... or were, now that Isbells gone.
get a grip.... your description could easily fit norwegian black metal bands as well.. Do they sound like the smiths?? Does the fact that both frontmen have masters in literature make their music sound the same?? the smiths and dbt are two different worlds...
I just now figured it out. In the video the boys are all tuned down a full step and playing in A. Chords as played are E, D, A; F#m, E, D, A; Bm, D, A. This is the equivalent of playing in G with standard tuning, which is what you hear. It is obvious that they are not playing D, C9, G, etc on the video. This has been a cause of confusion for me for many years. Never took the time to figure it out.
Mike Cooley is one of the best songwriters walking the earth. Period.
Mr. Cooley is a Stones/Keith Richards fan no doubt.....this would have rocked on Exile On Main Street!.........
Hell yeah this would fit on exile!! LOVE IT
0.30 is very early Mick Jagger

I love this whole group, but Cooley just has such a way with the "turn of a phrase".
