Pure fucking genius!!! I would be less of a human being without this music in my life. All you real musicians out there... Keep on your grind, we need to prove to society that the radio isn't worth a damn anymore. This is real music my friends!!!
No explanation why but this song touches deep in my soul. Been listening to it everyday for over a month. Now I’m learning it. My number 1 live concert goal now is the 400 club.
I've always loved the DBT and my favorite period was definitely with Jason. They made some amazing music. I got to see DBT with Jason a few times, then Jason solo at the same venue. He played all of his DBT songs. It was amazing. Haven't seen him live since he blew up. One day...
i wish jason isbell would come to my town, or any town within a days drive, i would camp out overnight for tickets, i love love love this music. he is a an amazing performer and songwriter.
Just saw Jason and the Unit last Saturday in Iowa City, they pretty well tore it up, just a wonderful show. And the cool thing was how many people were singing right along with him, these were Isbell fans for sure!
It makes me catch my breath just about every time, the way Amanda Shires can find the core of madness in a song and make it just pour out of her fiddle. The 400 Unit are a very, very good band on nights that she's not on stage with them. She has a substantial solo career of her own, after all. But on nights she's there with her fiddle, her harmonies, and her energy, they become something even more, and are truly a great band.
being from appalachia and growing up in the town where the hatfield/mccoy feud took place, this song touches me deeply. makes me think about war, not just on the battlefield but the wars we have fought thru american history. to gain our land, to gain our rights, our heritage and history.
Jason still absolutely kills it with this song. Just saw him here in Southern IL last Saturday. This entire band was brilliant. We missed his lovely fiddler because she's off recording with legends but he brought an amazing guitar player to fill in for her. Highly recommend you see this bunch if they come near you. They sold-out early here though.
Jason I hadn't listen to you close since you parted ways with the other guys/gal...but I love it. I love your songs...you are a brilliant guy. I never made it to the left side of the stage in DBT shows to let you know. I hope you keep making amazing music.
He has changed this song somewhat, not sure how exactly, but made it have more Umph. Heard many versions and this one and the one off the live from alabama album are by far my favorites.
RMFTideFan The reason this sounds different is that he is performing with his band, The 400 Unit, the song was originally recorded when he was with the Drive-by Truckers
bluesloverz Thanks for the info mate... that is really cool to know. My fiance plays/played fiddle for years and is getting back into it and it's really cool to be able to have a jam session (as well as a fiddle player in general) in the house.
bluesloverz Dam straight... I knew I had a good one when she let me leave the tweed 2x12 amp and 2 guitars in the living room "cause it looks cool"... HA!!! Best to ya, love this song and thanks for posting it aye.
+Robbie Smith that's a good song no doubt, but actually one of the weaker songs on that album. Life you Chose and Speed Trap Town are the best on that album imo
He's the greatest songwriter of his generation. I mean like Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, John Prine level, while also being an incredibly distinctive guitar player and singer. Those don't come along very often, with the standard being Merle Haggard: singer, songwriter, guitar player. I asked Merle Haggard one time which of those three talents did he find most personally rewarding.
My daddy got shot right in front of his house, he had no one to fall on but me. If that ain't country, you can kiss my ass. Jason Isbell is a national treasure.
In San Diego, yesterday, Sept. 18th, 2016, at the Kaboo Festival, same thing: Amanda wasn't there, but his second guitar took her solos, and killed it, did a long, extended dual give and take guitar solo with Isbell, and destroyed us all--such an incredibly fine, soul-wrought, righteous musician and band. Live, his vocals are even more intense and powerful than the best UA-cam captures. See this band, if you can.
really cool....'Decoration Day' is actually what we used to call 'Memorial Day' in the south....after the civil war the rebel soldiers who SURVIVED would put on all their medals and the town would have a parade in their honor , and to honor the fallen confederate soldiers....and then the fedral guvment made us change it in '64?....'the "He needed killin' law?"....wow . that IS pretty backwards....who decides?
Mike Hoster ok well perhaps i was mis-informed....my Grandmother has been gone a long time and this is what she told me...and i repeated it... that being said, i dont really trust 'moveon.org' either, as they tend to be biased...my Grandmother wasnt biased....or politically motivated ...and i dont suppose it really matters in the scheme of things, does it?
This is one Jasons best .u jellious punks need to learn about real music.Just saw show in columbia on friday he has a great show deffinetly not a studio band
it was at the "Chicken and Egg Festival" in Moulton, Alabama- there was a vendor there doing makeup/temp tattoos and Amanda had that done. It was a great show for about 300 folks in attendance.
COME *****ING ON JASON! You are better than this! It may be called "Decoration Day" but you weren't allowed to use a permanent marker on your future (and strangely .. past [twilight zone]) WIFES FACE! Then hide all the dressing room mirrors! God damn, I'm thinking a need to invent a time machine, to go back and fix this! .. Or ... Or see you on your latest tour. You were very good btw :) Best gig ever. I love your Les Pauls. Your lead guitarist changes guitar 165.2 times a gig, but he really wants a les paul. [PS for the slow of cheekiness, I was joking at the start :)].
Pure fucking genius!!! I would be less of a human being without this music in my life. All you real musicians out there... Keep on your grind, we need to prove to society that the radio isn't worth a damn anymore. This is real music my friends!!!
Jazzbo's this is actually a "Drive By Truckers" song. Jason was with them for years. They kicked him out of the band due to his drug abuse issues.
@@Tyslin
Though I believe he WROTE this song, so.... Kris/Krosssss :)
@@Tyslin
True...Drive by Truckers
🎵
He wrote it. Google murder in 1982 North Alabama. Jason is related to the people the song is about. Best writer in America. And probably the world.
@@Scott-sv8mz Think maybe that's a tad dramatic?
This is the best version I have ever heard of this. I think I’d be happy to just have this playing on repeat all day. Killed it
Honestly..the Drive by Truckers studio version is my favorite...the whole album is great..
Great live version, but for me, Amanda's solo didn't fit in well. Nitpicking, but fwiw.
I agree on this.
I agree on rebelradio71's post
Hands down the best version of this song I've ever heard.
absolutelynonameslef right? I get chills every time
I've got his demons but not his angels let's hope there's an Amanda Shires for us all
ish474 please see Dr. Gabor Mate on UA-cam. Best luck.
You and me both buddy. Tho I think I had her many years ago and lost her to dope and dope dealing. 61 now and don't see it happening again.
Ain’t that the truth! When your Amanda comes into your life, don’t let her go. I had mine, but was too dumb to realize!!
This did not age well.
@@christianklintholmbeat me to it. Aged like milk
Words can't even describe how incredible this song is. It's perfection.....
No explanation why but this song touches deep in my soul. Been listening to it everyday for over a month. Now I’m learning it. My number 1 live concert goal now is the 400 club.
Best song writer on this planet, and a hell of a guitar picker
Amen. Between the songwriting and the vocals, it’s a hell of a skill set. Then when he takes out the slide… Damn.
Amanda Shires is a class act! An excellent compliment to Jason's music.
Isbells nod to re-emerge his wife's brilliant violin at the end was in turn brilliant.
I saw Jason Isbell when he was with the Drive By Truckers and it was phenomenal. He is exceptionally phenomenal on his own. An amazing song writer!
I've always loved the DBT and my favorite period was definitely with Jason. They made some amazing music. I got to see DBT with Jason a few times, then Jason solo at the same venue. He played all of his DBT songs. It was amazing. Haven't seen him live since he blew up. One day...
Proud to enjoy such great American music. And this is the best of that genre right now.
Amanda is simply stunning.
Even with that funky eye makeup!!
Yeah... I made my GF watch their rendition of "Mutineer" last night, just to see what she thought of Amanda ;)
Can't get enough Isbell!! Jason is AMAZING LIVE!! You should go see him if at all possible.
David Watkins Definitely! You've got ta see Jason Isbell live! You won't be disappointed.
Saw him in Richmond Va a few years back...awesome!
What a kick ass story! Just when ya think it's over...Hang on...eargasm w/that lil bit of violin. Keep On Keepin On Jason!!!
Best version of this song. I keep coming back.

I was there that night. He was amazing!! ❤❤❤
Amanda is fantastic, as usual. That's wicked playing, not flashy but it really cuts.

this song makes me look forward to decoration day every year!

Jason Isbell one of the most talented out there !
one of the greatest songs ever written.
Great video of one the best artists these days!
Great performance last night in Edinburgh. A brilliant talent
Listen to this on way to cemetery every decoration day
As great as this is. here we are almost 4 years later and this song live is so much better.
good music refreshes the soul, bravo!

How can anyone dislike this???
What a GREAT song!
S G Yeah, he’s a great musician, and he’s came back from rehab a different man. Glad to say he’s a relative of mine.
Must've been one of them Lawson Boys... damn them.
I saw Jason once. AWESOME SHOW. Magnificent musician.
This is SO GORGEOUS!
Hey, it's Decoration Day... To Pop-Pop, all family and friends. I remember.
P.S.--Slide guitar rocks.
How can so many views happen and so few likes? WTF??? This man is amazing!!!
Drove to Moulton for this show. It was a damn good one.
So fine....Amanda....good job by you Jason. Your work with DBT is priceless.
Awesome... great performance, Love the gal on backing fiddle too. Great song, great job playing it.
The gal on the fiddle is Jason's wife Amanda Shires.

Jason need to come play in Union City, Tennessee! I'd love to hear this magic live!
What a pair!
Great version!!!
Powerful!
Wow, Incredible performance! I haven't heard the DBT' studio version in ages, but now I've gotta go dig it out!

Very cool! Great band & song!
just remembering the lyrics to these songs is an accomplishment
this son also reminds me of "shotgun stories", fits it almost to a T, you gotta check that movie out!
Great song. Brilliant band.
@jasonisbell we love you!
Imagine joining a band and the first two songs you bring in are "Decoration Day" and "Outfit."
His voice has gotten better throughout the years, more full in my opinion. Usually it's the opposite.
quitting drinking was the best thing he (and me) ever did
you've heard Something more than free right? I disagree with you disagreeing ;)
Children of Children is maybe his best effort ever!
If you think Isbell pre-Southeastern is better than modern Isbell then we just have different tastes in music
+Robbie Smith that's a good song no doubt, but actually one of the weaker songs on that album.
Life you Chose and Speed Trap Town are the best on that album imo
way cool, way good.
reminds me of Band's Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.
Chester McCoy yusdjxjxjduznxv
Chester McCoy he has a song about the singer of The Band
Chester McCoy check out Danko Manuel
about two members
The first time I heard this song I felt The Band "vibe" (and that's high praise). Guess I'm not alone. Great song!
A songwriter supreme ... rock.. as in this version .. or acoustic .. QUALITY ..
WOW. Just WOW
This should of been one of the Justified TV show theme song.
Lmao I also discovered the Truckers from that scene when Shane gets his ass kicked
he wrote this song and outfit after only being in DBT for 2 weeks while they were all on the road
Nice guitar solo... and violin.
that's called a fiddle..and she knows how to play it...:)
It's called a violin, Operation Yewtree.
Violin is more classical while fiddle is the exact word when it comes to folk musics (Irish, Bluegrass, Country, Americana, etc...)
awesome

They need to make a movie out of this story.
+FCB Games the did...its called "Frozen".... you haven't seen it???
No. No. No. No.
It's criminal that of all the live versions on various albums, none have Amanda's fiddle on them.
I knew the calliber in daddy's chest... I knew what Holland Hill drives. Weirdly accurate...
Sweet Christ. This.
My daddy got shot right in front of his house, he had no one to fall on but me. If that ain't country, you can kiss my ass. Jason Isbell is a national treasure.
He played the fuck out of this song, when I saw him in Reno two months ago!!
Ironically, though written from the Lawson family's point of view, Jason Isbell is actually related to Holland Hill (distantly).
Hollan not Holland "David Hollan Hill"
This is originally a Drive-By Truckers song though.
Jason Isbell was formally a member of the Drive-By Truckers and wrote this song.
I remember reading Jason said that he was related to the Lawsons...
VanDiemensLander no hes related to the hills. He even went to hollans funeral a few years back
Fucking fantastic
Lawd have mercy!
When is he going to tour out West?!
I no what Holland Hill drives and if you see him RUN
to hell with isbell who's on the fiddle, I'm in love
+Bj Ellison his wife
His wife, Amanda Shires. She's a helluva musician in her own right. And they have the sweetest little baby girl named Mercy.
+Donna McCubbin oh
+bj Ellison I'm sorry to tell you, but you probably don't stand a chance.
+Donna McCubbin I knew I didn't have a chance
Those eyes
is that a slytherin ring?
Is that Amanda shires in the band playing the fiddle in this particular song
Yeah, she's his wife
I guess I already know the answer to questions I ask
Additionally I'm not mistaken she wasn't his wife at the time of this video
Isn’t that Patterson on bass?
It looks like him but it's not. I thought the same thing when I first saw him lol
It's all true. The names have been changed to protect the guilty.
But a chain on my back and my ear to the floor, and I'll send all the Hill boys to Hell, I'll send all the Hill boys to Hell.
Wailing.

why is Amanda wearing the makeup?
it was at the "Chicken and Egg Festival" in Moulton, Alabama- there was a vendor there doing makeup/temp tattoos and Amanda had that done. It was a great show for about 300 folks in attendance.
So glad he left the truckers.

The reason I wouldn't date Gina Schock is because she was a heavy smoker!
Nobody needs all those losses of life.
Nobody needs all us Lawsons alive. The song is about a fictional feud between the Hill and Lawson family.
Chris Gilmore Not fictional. It's about this:
