- I'm pruning my Black Spruce (Picea mariana) today with the possibility of it going into my Northern bog mixed forest planting. I'm pruning the tree in the compact conical form that they typically grow in nature.

Now that pathway with the division with the moss gives it a great realistic woodsy scene.
Thanks Tom!!
I got inspired by your collection of the "Royal Oak" seeds a couple years ago, continuing an important tree's life cycle. I went and visited the largest remaining American elm tree in my state, and one of the largest American elms in the country. I got some seeds, and some root suckers from it to continue it's legacy. The owner told me an arborist said the tree is older than America itself, early 1700s was their estimated plant date 🤯 The trunk was wider than my kitchen, it was really amazing. Just wanted to share that
Wow, that's amazing, my dream would be to go around to all of the oldest or famous trees in the world and start bonsai from the seeds!!!
@@TheBonsaiZone Well you can start small, you don't immediately have to go to that 4000 year old Ginkgo in China, or the Buddha tree in India. America has something called "The Champion Tree National Register" which has a team measure particularly large and old trees and puts the largest ones into the list. Ill see if Canada has anything similar.
Always love some spruce work 😆. THANKS Nigel!!
Thanks Ryan!!
Oh, fantastic! that tree and forest sure have evolved in a very short period of time!
Can’t wait to see the work on the bog forest! I love the deadwood, too!
Thanks, just posted the video!!
Think that's your best forest. Long, hard thinking is required...
Thanks!!!!
Looking great as always. Motivating me to get my big forest started.
Awesome! In the flashback, both your hair and the black spruce evolved! I've never really thought about that. Haha
I'm a fan of keeping both deads and incorporating the tall live spruce. I've never seen a forest (except in bonsai) without dead standing trees.
Lol, thanks so much!!!!
Absolutely love the look of the spruce forest, Nigel! Very realistic. I'd definitely leave the dead trees in the composition, but maybe move them slightly as you suggested 👍🏴
Thanks RAE!!
looks good. yeah I've found spruce to be an awesome grower. it will look great in the forest. I do like the dead trees too, but i know it'll turn out well
Do you ever place deadfall on the ground of your forests? Usually you see so much of it in the woods that it might add a good effect, especially to your bog forest, which seems to fit that style. Maybe you can shear off one of those two dead trees and leave it strewn across the ground.
Maybe even push it over so the root ball is half exposed, that could look super neat
@@RyanFish825 I agree. That would make for and even more realistic composition.
Yes, I've tried it in my forests, it definitely makes the forest more realistic, it does have the draw back that it makes the forest floor look cluttered also, less of a fantasy forest. I'll definitely experiment with deadfall as this forest gets show ready!
The pruning of the tree makes it look really good. The Black Spruce in the forest will look cool to an already cool forest.
I really like the new edition!!
👍👌👌
Cute little tree! And really looking forward going videos on the forest! 👏
Coming soon!
@@TheBonsaiZone missed the premiere, but… oh boy, was it good, wasn’t it?!? 👍
@@sbragaglia Maybe a bit controversial?!!
@@TheBonsaiZone controversial because you’ve expressed an opinion on mycelium? 🤔
@@sbragaglia Yes, bare rooting is counter to what most bonsai people preach.
Looks amazing. Your videos featuring your coniferous trees are my favorites!
Thanks Rick, more to come!!!
you can put one of the dead trees laying on the ground horizontally. That would be very realistic
Awesome!!
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
I know you like to refer to this as your northern bog forest. It is a nice looking planting. in the truest sense of the word, it is a pnjing. a true forest in bonsai consists of a single species.
Thanks Paul, it seems the rules to a bonsai forest are vague, here is an excerpt from the internet....
"A bonsai forest, Yose-ue, is just what it sounds like; several trees planted together in one container. Together these trees look like a miniature forest. Most often, these forests consist of one species of tree, but there is no hard and fast rule, so several species can be used."
You got me thinking, how my Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is doing. I planted a little one in my flower bed last summer. It is just knee high and I am going to keep it small for a long time. They grow slowly when young, so I expect it not needing much work any time soon. It was a cute little tree in the fall.
Cool Liisa!!
Really love Spruce! Prickly tricky customers but very rewarding!! I managed to find 2 Picea Jezoensis here in the UK that I can start developing this uear and also some seeds, really hoping they germinate!!
Very cool!
would like to see the dead tree blocking the pass or something interesting like that
I'll be detailing the forest once it gets to a show ready stage and this would be an excellent detail to add!!!
It will be quite a bit of work to put the black spruce into the forest, no meeting for me tonight, Cherry is out with the car.
How old is this tree. I harvested many black spruce seeds.
First comment?? 👀👀👀
Almost!
@@TheBonsaiZone nearly got it 😎😎
👍👍🙏😊

Respect 👍🏻
Awesome!!!
Throid????
GREAT pruning. Really like your idea of placing the Black Spruce in the foreground and moving a dead tree more to the background. Did anyone ever tell you, you’ve got a good eye for nature??? Thank you for your videos. You are a good human being. Enjoy
