The Yadkin River north of South Pilot Mt. State park contains the best quality smallmouth fishing in North Carolina. People don't realize it because the river is "unstable." It quickly muddies after most any storm upstream. And yet, if you learn to fish it, you'll catch much larger smallmouth than in any river in NC.

I have some advice if your open to it. Spent years fishing piedmont streams in NC just like that one. Fish slow, fish quiet. Toss on structure and let fall in. Use soft weedless rigged baits. Best fished when water low and clear to slightly turbid the hole up and are easier to find. 6" 8" jerkworms craws lizards do best some squid or crawlers, natural colors shad silver grey smoke gold etc unless dirty water then change to brighter. Carolina or Texas rigged 03, 04 sprout hook #4 sinker. Buy bulk 50 hooks pound of shot 10 CT bag baits. Slow retrieve small twitches and let rest so it will waft in current naturally like a minnow does or twitch like a craw etc. We year em up. Even small streams have big fish. Keep working a hole, they stack up and may catch a few smaller ones before the big ones decide to hit. Let them pick it up and move before setting hook.

Best time to do the UR is in the spring. Even though I do a LOT of dragging during the Summer too.
I always fish for them going upstream and catch most throwing from the ponds to base of the rapids.
Yes those lizards really work well.
Went yesterday and believe it or not paddled a mile and half upstream from low water bridge without exiting my yak. When I was ready to return, I drifted the entire ride without a single power stroke, only steering. Caught fish all the way back to the bridge.
Enjoyed watching you guys learn about the LONG dragging days from bridge to bridge. I have passed many a ticked off first time kayaker asking me "how far is that dang bridge(put mildly)?!"
This little river is a gem to have Smallmouth bass and a healthy population of Roanoke Bass (even more rare)in the southern Piedmont. I cherish it dearly and always catch / release.

Congrats on the Smallmouth! Up here in upstate NY they are our prime catch. Pound for pound one of the hardest fighting fish there is.

Southern Outdoors Fishing It’s definitely a workout. If I ever decide to do that again I’m gonna put a couple layers of gorilla tape on the vulnerable parts of my kayak. I scratched the crap out of the bottom lol

Hey Thomas: If only there had been some water, ... crazy thing about smallies is they like water. Ha ha. Seriously, smallies are worth the effort. Thanks for sharing your adventure! (I'm fortunate enough to be living in Canada where I get 20+ kayak trips for smallies each year.)
