I never herded an 18 but did an S-7, a 14 and a 24. Like the 18 with the straight pipe, the 24 had a 12V-71 in front and a 6-71 in back with a pipe about the same size as the one on the 18 but a 45 degree turnout at the end about 3 or 4 inches long. At full bore with the 12 right beside me I could only hear a slight hiss out of the back engine and the V-12 had a muffler. BUT when you passed another one the pipe was pointed right at you and it would vibrate the fillings in your teeth, as in JARR you! I lived around 20 or 25 miles away and on a clear night you could hear the rear engines cutting in and out. It was a dam job. The S-7 and the 14 had 4-71's, the S-7 with one and the 14 with 2. And I was on the 24 for 12 hours a night. the 14 was on a road job on days. I liked the day job much better! They're tough machines and will go like a 4x4! Thanks again, Lads!

Thanks Lewie the vibrating teeth must have been something else!

The dam was a long haul with a wide road but we moved to a new location and were stripping and rough going and CLOSE contact as in narrow roads when there were roads. THEN is when you might not be 5 or 6 feet away from that angled pipe pointed right at your poor old head. And you know how a 2-cycle sounds under load anyway. I'm blessed to be able to hear as well as I do!

Sounds like you are. Given the work you've done.

I got out of reform school (high school) in 69 and got a job pulling a sheeps-foot roller right out of school on a road job. Then the Army in January 70 and went solid from then on, trying everything and anything and a whole bunch of stuff that didn't have anything to do with anything but still paid the bills. Chauffeurs license at 21. I'm 67 now and still trying stuff when I can. Mostly try and stay ahead of grass growing higher than the house but still get to burn some fuel now and then. Old operators don't quit until they can't crawl on something anymore, and then they get help!

    Was there ever a TS32?
