    Hi MAX, we have had a QSO in the dim & distant past. Tnx for your contributions on U-TUBE / WELL DONE. I will try to be short with my comments here. I had a wonderful job as a Freight train Driver & out of the blue I developed a SPINAL DISEASE so end of my DREAM JOB early in my 40s.
    In 1974 I bought a COBRA 148 GTL-DX from a fellow worker which he fitted into my MINI with a DV 27 antenna.
    When I was told "END OF THE LINE" {excuse the pun} I was devastated. Little did I realise how my life would change FOR THE BETTER thanks to my COBRA. I am fortunate that I live on the WEST COAST of WALES very close to YR-WYDDFA or SNOWDON for the none speaking Welsh readers. I rapidly realised that I had MORE time for 11 mtr / SSB radio & only a 7 minute drive to just under 2,000 feet ASL on a local perch in the SNOWDONIA NATIONAL PARK. I DESPISE going on U.K F.M because of the CONSTANT BAD LANGUAGE, EVERYBODY grouping up on ch 19. So SSB / 27.555 was for me. For perspective I have been an Alfa-Tango member for 43 continuous years. From my PERCH in OVER 40 years I have contacted over 250 divisions ALL confirmed with QSL CARDS & ALL from my MOBILE! O.K maybe HEIGHT IS MIGHT? I have had C.Bers or Radio Operators staying at my home from 10 different Countries & I have visited nearly EVERY EUROPEAN COUNTRY except North Europe. Also USA 4 times. For me being a CHRONIC PAIN SUFFERER 11 mtr radio has been a LIFE SAVER. Anybody who is uncertain whether to try for the 1st time, GIVE IT A GO. You WILL BE AMAZED & you DO NOT need a LICENCE these days for those bands. I could carry on writing ALL NIGHT but this is enough FOR NOW. A HEARTFELT THANK YOU to you MAX for givinng me the PUSH to put PEN to PAPER so to speak. If ANYBODY wishes to reply to ME or ANY other 11 mtr Radio Operator then please do as I would be ONLY TOO PLEASED to help. GOOD NIGHT ALL from Kenny, 163 A.T 011, 100% Mobile or PORTABLE on YR-WYDDFA {SNOWDON MOUNTAIN}, P.S, to finish I will add that my Mobile Equipment is - RADIO a "PRESIDENT LINCOLN Mk 2 +£, My Antenna is a "WILSON 5000 Mobile / vertical MAGNETIC", My Linear Amp {just a little extra power is a "R.M 703" which sits snug under my Driver's Seat.
    73s / 51s to YOU ALL....KENNY, WEst Coast of WALES.

      Hi Kenny. Yes, we have had 5 QSO's, at least 2 of which you were mobile in Snowdonia. Sorry to hear your woes but you seem positive to deal with it. I remember our chats on 11m. as I am familiar with your area in North Wales. Nice mobile/portable set up you have there. Hopefully I will catch you on air again soon, it has been a while. Cheers

    Thanks Max. I've just passed my Foundation and am currently waiting for my Licence, I found your video really helpful. I never thought about CQ calling outside calling channels now that you've mentioned someone is probably out there 'scanning' and could come across my CQ.. Brilliant! that never occurred to me, thanks again.

    Hey thanks for taking the time to make this. You made a lot of very good points, and I like your attention to keeping things running smoothly and not making things any harder than they need to be. Straight to the point contacts are the best ones I think. Exchange of call, location, quick signal report and on to the next is how I like to do things. Sometimes someone may comment on my audio and ask what I'm running, that's when I'll ask them if they'd like to go up or down and I'll gladly answer any questions they have. This is all very good advice and I hope more will spread the word to others after seeing your video. I'm also on ham radio, so I learned a little about radio etiquette while studying for my license, but for someone who has only been on CB, then finds themselves with a SSB rig, say a converted 10m, they don't really understand how things are supposed to work. It's not their fault at all, and if no one ever showed them how to make a proper contact long distance, they cant really be blamed for not knowing the exact format being used by most of the good operators out there. As far as the music playing and such, I'd held out hope that was only going to stay on the regular 40 AM, but, I suppose idiots can afford better rigs too, so what can we do? I like how you handle it though, you try to tell the guy to go away, for one, he can't hear you until he finally unkeys, and once he does, if you say anything directly to him at all he's accomplished his goal and got the attention he was seeking. Then we end up with 2 guys arguing and disrupting the flow rather than just the 1 idiot we started with. There's no point telling him he's an ass because he is, and has been his whole life, deep down he knows already so there's no need to tell him again. I subscribed to your channel as this is the first video of yours I've seen. I look forward to seeing what else you have to say, and thanks again for taking the time.

    Thanks for the reasonable and helpful advice Max. Very valid today in times of propagation.
    I came back to CB after 40 years and found the behaviour on 27.555 quite discouraging. What I notice is that the vast majority of the stations are friendly and correct, and just a few people spoil it for the rest.
    I decided to get my HAM license, and for the moment I just stay on 26.258 USB, even if there is very little activity. Maybe this is because you need a broadband antenna or an antenna tuner. If there is somebody it works great though. It's worth promoting this frequency.
    All the best.

      Hi. Thanks for your comment. Feedback is always useful to me. I "hang out" on 26.285USB myself, especially when I am doing work with my computer. Occasionally someone puts a call there and each time it is a good QSO. My antennas tune to 27 & 26. I use no tuner. I first started on 11m. in the late 1970's and things have changed although with the exception of the links to Internet, things are much the same. Hopefully catch you on air sometime. I have never wanted to go for Ham Licence. I only SWL on HF but RXTX on 11m. Cheers

    Didn't get the 450D was priced out of it, decided 1st Hf Radio is the Alinco DX-SR8, which I think is very similar.

    Hey you old hippie. You sound very much like a Scotsman. I'm a Ham radio operator and quite often I do 11 meters. Hang mostly on 27.385 LSB which is the national calling frequency on 11 meters. I use a Yaesu 991a which I had the MARS mod done so I can go anywhere on 25 to 27 MHz. I use an Antron 99 antenna for 11 & 10 meters. I've got an MFJ 969 Versa Tuner II, roller inductor tuner just in case my 991a won't tune the frequency. Cheers & 73 from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee

    • @MaxMountainWorld
      @MaxMountainWorld  2 роки тому

      On 11m. Call Signs are much more prevalent these days and not solely for Ham Operations. Many CB'ers use call signs now too and us Freebanders have used them since many decades ago. That very first recorded Trans-Atlantic (the one in which Mary apparently gave birth to a small sheep!) wasn't Ham. Still used a call sign. Its too easy to fall into categorizing stuff. Really Any radio operator, CB, Freeband, SWL and Ham is just Playing Radio. Thanks for your Comment Here. Cheers

    Great video. Very interesting. What would be the call sign for a station in Maine, USA using your call system? Or is there not one?
    I am an Extra class ham in the US and we sometimes use Country names in place of the NATO phenetic alphabet with contacts that have trouble with English but they know country names. It can be a big help to them to understand your call sign. In your case I can see where it could be a pain where you have people making there own call signs. When we get a call we know right away what country they are so maybe it is not as much of an issue for us. Sometime we have fun with our call signs. Mine is NC1RL so in place of the normal phenetics I will say "Not Cool One Really Lame". I have a friend in the UK whos call ends in EVY and he calls himself "Ever Vicious Yob" or "Enjoying Various Yeasu's" Its funny because he does not like Yeasu. All in fun. We all seem to have one like that for ourselves. I do that when chatting with friends who already know my call. Some are really clever.
    Okay have fun and stay safe.

      Thanks, Nice Comment. 11m. Format is (Country/Island/Territory etc) Prefix ~ Club call (or made-up (very few problems!)) ~ Unit Number. i.e. My Call 14SW007 = 14 (France) SW (Somerset Wallies) 007 (number was available after I left Ireland (29SW007). Full 11m prefix lists are freely available to download all over the net, try fldx.org. I also use 14DD007 (Doune-Deveron (NE Scotland)) whenever I use my Moxon Wire antenna and/or when in QSO with other Club members. 2 division = USA Although many USA operators only use their call and unit number and some only a unit number. • @MaxMountainWorld
      @MaxMountainWorld  Рік тому +2

      11m.Band is often referred to as "FreeBand". Do what you want. I started DX'ing late 70's and my initals are MMM so used callsign 108MX3. After a few months I joined the Scottish Highlanders and became 108SH100. A few years later I joined the Somerset Wallies ~ 108SW100. 100 wasn't available in the group when I moved to Ireland so on request I took on 29SW007. After 9yr hiatus I am now in France, hence 14SW007. I am with Doune Deveron group from North East Scotland as I know many of the operators personally and nowadays my static-mobile DX activity is 14DD007p and when I have QSO with other members. I suggest just make something up in the accepted format and you will find the DX'ing interesting, especially the links to Clusters and allsorts on the internet. You don't need to be anything, this is FreeBand and you will very quickly be invited to 11m.DX Clubs/Groups. I hope you find this to be as you wish and thanks again. I hope to catch you soon on 26/27megs. Until please keep in touch. Search my call sign on Facebook. Cheers

    • @MaxMountainWorld
      @MaxMountainWorld  3 роки тому +1

      Hi There. the format, although there are exceptions, is the country prefix (divisions) identifies the location. letters following are either the radio club or just something made up (initials or whatever) and the unit number. This was originally established by the largest "Group" on 11metre band ~ Alfa Tango. Check out www.alfatango.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=387. two examples:~ my first (self-assigned) call was 108MX3. 108=Scotland MX3 my initals MMM. I currently am 14SW007 ~ 14=France SW is my radio club (Somerset Wallies) and my unit number 007. Best would be to get in with one of the radio dx groups on Facebook. I'd like to see this opened up here in the US if it's actually legal to use for you. Here our 11m band is from 26.965 to 27.405 and many still go out of band and use those frequencies anyway. I'm sure the rest of the bandwidth was used for pagers and such, but that time has pretty much seen its day.

      Thanks. Interesting comment. Yes many use other frequencies, myself included. There are still pagers and other stuff but the band is pretty much FreeBand now from around 25.800 up to 27.995 although most are on the "mid" and "hi" bands 26.965-27.405 & 27.415-287.855 I may catch you around on 11metres. Hi Max, I think ham radio would be much better suited to you after watching your video I can see the drive you have to learn new things as well as teaching others. Getting a foundation licence is dead easy and even just doing that you’ll learn things you never new, plus it will give you access to many more bands from the Khz’s bands right up to the GHz bands rather than limiting yourself to 11m’s which is only open mainly in the summer months. I’m not knocking CB as I was a CB’er in the late 70s and early 80s before they legalised it. Just a thought but I enjoy your wee video’s max. Cheers Allan.

      Hi. Thanks for Your interesting comment. I take on board what you say but please note that my Radio Videos here are only a tiny part of what I do. I am more than happy as such and would have no reason to do other stuff. In 45yrs of CB/Pirate/FreeBand I have never felt tempted to go for Ham. One statement you made "limiting yourself to 11m’s which is only open mainly in the summer months" ~ not so. 11m. is open most of the time. and is only one of many FreeBands. Cheers

      On 11m.Band our prefixes are Country/Island specific... 1=Italy ~ 2=USA ~ 3=Brazil etc.etc... The following letters are either made-up or associated with a radio club/group and the "unit-number" accordingly...either made up or allocated by your club. Mine... 14SW007 14=France....SW Somerset Wallies radio club (UK) and I requested/was allocated 007. Best info can be obtained by joining one of the radio groups/clubs, usually free and almost always loaded up with operators willing to help etc. Put my callsign 14sw007 into Facebook and contact me there and I can give you more specific pointers. Max I agree on the whole with pretty much everything you said.
    Clarity is key... and I've always said that you need to be confident when you call CQ. CQ like your life depends on it haha.
    In truth, 9 times out of 10 I don't even bother with t5. 27.590usb is my frequency of choice or 26.095usb.
    Plus, I use the same radio as you and I have my little pre-recorded CQ call...push of a button and boom, job done.
    To be honest though, the ola coca cola I can live with.... but El comandente throwing out a 1kw of Spanish comedy pisses me off for sure.

    • @LuCiFeRSDS

      To be honest, 11m has its moments. Sometimes the behaviour by unlicensed cb boys is actually quite professional. A lot of the UK guys are pretty serious about radio... some also hold other licences hehehe.
      But until you've heard El comandente... you've heard nothing haha. I've been on 11m stateside many moons ago, and to be fair... apart from chatting a lot of shit (which was damn amusing on many levels:)) I loved using the radio while i was there.
      But at the end of the day, if you use ham bands or cb or wave the skull and crossbones on the freebands.... radio is radio... and it is an amazing and educational hobby and everybody should strive to improve :)
