    Another fun day with the 10-meter band! I made my first contact with Japan. I heard a lot of activity on 10 meters with Jamaica and South America. I was not able to break thru the pile ups with my 100 watts and Buddistick. Hard to compete with big quad beams and linear amplifiers, however, I heard a HAM in Japan calling CQ while tuning up and down the band. I quickly answered back and was rewarded with a nice QSO.
    I am running a Yaesu 857-D at 100watts barefoot into a Buddistick supported by a Buddipole Mast & Tripod on my front porch . . . so nothing special or fancy but a ton of fun!

    Made my first 3 Japan contacts on 10 M today. Such excitement as I used to live in Japan. Very difficult to reach Japan from Chicago, but finally the band opened up and I did it!

    David, you sound like an old veteran. Welcome to ham radio! I have yet to get a 10 meter rig and antenna and start operating. My QTH is Beatrice, NE but spend time in Hastings, NE as well. There are severe tower height restrictions in the city and not enough room for a long dipole or sloper so I'm thinking about going mobile. My call is KB5ZDW and the handle is Rene. I retired from a major Department of Defense contractor after 37 years in March if 2008. I lived in New Mexico. Well, I'll stay posted here and tuned in when I pick up a good SWL receiver. Until next time 73's from KB5ZDW

    nicely done! I just recently made a 10M contact to Japan from Grants Pass with 100W and a wire dipole - got a 59 report - I couldn't believe it! I guess you just never know when to start recording!

    Brilliant, reminds me of my first 10-meter contact down into Florida when I first got my license. At that point I was living in a condo in Westlake Ohio, using a Yaesu FT-897D, 100 watts into a tunable car antena stuck in the loft. I'm back in Cape Town South Africa now and seeing your video has inspired me to get my license sorted out here. 73, Martin, KD8LON.
    P.S. I like your portable setup, I made a portable solar powered Go-Pack for the FT-817ND. It's on my channel if you want to see it.

    HA HA!! Love the Starbucks info at the end. I like the new iPortable setup. been wanting to do a "gobox" for a while and looked at a BUNCH of ideas on the web. Starting that project now so that it will be ready for FIELD DAY. The iPortables are nice but for the price do not offer the flexibility in design I wanted. Going to go with an 8 or 10u rack box (depends on which power supply I choose). Great looking setup you have though and I know its much easier to move around NOW. 73, WV8KFA

    Sir I must ask since I use a A99 why oh why do hams think using a big beam on a big tower will help them ?? Ki4nzj here I've made good QSOs with 25 watts from a HTX-10 and a 25 foot antron 99. I've just wondered why the beams are so necessary?

    • @1OFGODSOWN
      @1OFGODSOWN 7 років тому

      Because a beam focuses most all of the signal in one direction as well as it reduces signals from other directions that can interfere with the stations you are attempting to speak with.It's common sense if you know anything about how radio signals work you would know why & you should have learned this when you studied for your Ham Radio license.I have talked all over the world on my Antron 99 but when I'm serious about working stations around the world I use my beam antennas because they will send & receive much stronger signals every time than my Antron 99.I searched the call sign KI4NZJ on the FCC data base & it shows the license was cancelled on March 8,2016 Richard Simble.There is plenty of information about how antennas work & a Beam vs Vertical the the beam will WIN 99.9% unless the QSO is local & the receiving station is vertical & the transmitting station is horizontal then there is a 20 db difference in signals because of the change in polarization.With DX the beam will WIN hands down.

    • @OM0ET
      @OM0ET 7 років тому

      Very often happens, that some nice DX contacts would be not possible, if a other DX operator had not a big antenna system. When i make VK Australia with my 85cm small magnetic loop antenna and 100w, it means that the QSO was done because of perfect big antenna system of other operator, not because of my small antenna. So that's the story. We small operators sometimes thanks to that BIG GUNS :-) 73, Paul
