I am so glad you talked about this! They are such an underrated studio. They deserve more recognition. The people who think animation is for kids haven’t seen anime.
Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers are two of the best animated films we’ve gotten in the last decade. Song of the Sea is my personal favorite of theirs though.
No joke, I had a professor in college who said that it was "creepy" for college-age people to watch animated movies. She said this because a few people in my class talked about going to see The Incredibles II, which had just entered theaters at the time. I asked her to watch This Corner of the World and Breadwinners, but she refused. Some people will just never change.
I went to a university with an animation program. We not only had a library of films to watch, but we even had a relationship with Dreamworks where we would be able to attend exclusive screenings of their feature films. They weren't always the greatest movies, but it was a nice outreach program.
I found this video while searching UA-cam for Cartoon Saloon-related content, and yes, indeed, The Breadwinner is NOT for kids. It is a TERRIFYING depiction of theocratic misogyny that would have given me nightmares when I was thirteen. Heck, it gives me nightmares now. Yet that's exactly what it's supposed to do. It's not my favorite Cartoon Saloon film -- Wolfwalkers takes that honor -- but it is a beautiful, powerful, and important movie. Parvana is a remarkable heroine.
I'm glad that you're giving The Breadwinner the praise it deserves, because I think it's the most underrated out of this underrated Cartoon Saloon movie library. The Secret of kells, Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers they are still pretty much talked about whenever someone is talking about an independent animated feature or metioning the studio Cartoon Saloon, but The Breadwinner not so much. I know its the most dark of these movies and it deals with heavy themes ,but I think it sill deserves the attention just like the others. Plus I love how Cartoon Saloon wasn't afraid to come out of their comfort zone and tried something diffrent from their usual out put.
The crayz part about Breadwinner is that my wife and I went into it knowing nothing about the plot. It tore our hearts apart. Film is beautiful but rough. Think Grave of the Fireflies.
I came apon this video an as an Irish person, I am ecstatic that you are talking about this! Song of the Sea is my absolute favourite movie from it. Dorg Van Dango (a show that they made) is probably one of my favourite TV shows as well!
The way these characters act on these animated films is just so real, how a father gets angry like the father of Searsha(nevermind the apelling), and how the uncle of Brendan acts when he's angry too. Aslo, I really love the Breadwinner, ugh!, it's so beautiful for me. I really like them all, the situation is speaking more than their words. It's not kinda boring, but it's so cool even when they're 2D, as they say, tge story is King.
Omg The Secret of Kells and The Breadwinner were phenomenal! Breadwinner and Song of the Sea were my favorites! This studio is SO underrated!!!!!! I loved ALL of these movies and their unique art style! While I don’t think Wolfwalkers was as strong as the other movies, it was still a great movie that had my favorite heroines from these movies. These characters are great at writing heroines! Don’t get me wrong, I loved the characters from Breadwinner, Song of the Sea, and Secret of Kells, but Robin and Maeve are still my favorites! I love how family matters in these movies. Most stories with kids going on adventure tend to involve leaving the parents or families behind, but I love how the families ALWAYS play important parts in these movies. I also like how all of their movies except Wolfwalkers have a story within a story.
I've never seen the movies, only clips, but I always thought the animation was stunning. Now I'm definitely more interested in checking these movies out. Also, I love the new hair! You look gorgeous.
I adore Cartoon Saloons work! With Wolfwalkers being my favorite (though I haven't seen Breadwinner yet so I'll have to see if that changes). One thing I really enjoy that they play around with is the use of shapes and perspective. There's a lot of moments in Wolfwalkers especially where they'll break the perspective of a scene to give it more flavor in a way that just couldn't be replicated in another film medium. I also discovered from another review that they'd used different line clearness/style for the characters depending on if they were with the forest or the town (with Robin's lines switching throughout) which I hadn't noticed during my first watch through. Just-the amount of care and effort going into these movies is astounding and I really hope people start giving them more attention because they absolutely deserve it!
My dad owns these movies and I've been curious about them. I've only seen The Secret of Kells. But now I really want to watch Breadwinner. I don't know if he has Wolfwalkers but that one sounds cool too.

Thank you for telling us about Cartoon Saloon. I had no idea wolfwalker was made by its own studio! ps: poor Sephiroth hidden in the corner. He needs more love! ^^
Sneezy reviews, I personally think a cartoon saloon version of the lion, the witch and the wardrobe would look gorgeous do you think that could be good ?
@@SneezyReviews also a bit like how song of the sea has ashling making a quick appearance on the bus as a call back to the secret of kells and the eye of crom also making an appearance in wolfwalkers gives off the implication that all three films take place in the same universe, I thought what might make a good call back or rather call forward to song of the sea is by having the wardrobe that saorise gets her granny's best coat out of in her house, that turning out to be the very same wardrobe that the pevensies travelled through years earlier, after all we never find out what happened to the wardrobe after the end of the lion, the witch and the wardrobe its not too unlikely to think it made its somehow made its way from England to Ireland.
@@SneezyReviews also it would fit into the timeline as well if all the cartoon saloon films took place in the same world. The secret of kells in the middle ages, then wolfwalkers in 1650, the lion the witch and the wardrobe 1940, my fathers dragon 1948, song of the sea 1987 and finally the breadwinner 2001.
As a Muslim woman i really loved Breadwinner and how the clearly stated that the Taliban are completely the opposite of what my religion teaches and we all really despise them, and the beautiful writing was revolutionary for me. (mild spoiler but the way the side story turns out to be a retelling of Parvana's brother was amazing.) And the way Wolfwalkers using the animation to progress the story- just, god bless you thank god someone is finally talking about cartoon saloon.
Parvana's brother came in at the very end, but the rest of the story, imo, mirrored Parvana's journey. Think about it: The village was totally happy and content, and then the evil jaguars came and stole the village's most precious resource, which they could not live without. And the boy is just a child, but he vows to get the seeds back, despite nobody believing in his ability to do so. And along the way, through his ability to connect with others and his dedication, he ends up getting the help and strength he needs in order to get the precious resource back and reunite with his village. Although he does use the story of Parvana's brother to soothe the elephant king, the rest of the story mirrors, beat by beat (I especially love the part where both the boy and Parvana feel like they've hit their lowest point and can't continue, and Parvana's mother ends up taking over the storytelling that night as she gently brushes Parvana's head) - it mirrors the journey Parvana undertakes in order to - [SPOILER AHEAD]: - get her dad back from Pul-e-Charkhi.
Wolf Walkers and Song of the Sea have been in my list for a while (I really like shapeshifter/magic stories). I will definitely get to them quicker now!
