To solo through all the changes of all three parts on a song like that with clear sense of the melody continuously being hinted at melody for that parts as they go the essential parts of the Melody
I had some version of Jerry Garcia Band doing this live on a weird old Grateful dead mix tape that I got form a friend years ago. The tape also had the Fuggs' song about Marijuana, and some kind of psychedelic sounding promo from what might have been a San Fran radio station. It's a great tune. It's a cover. The original was done by the Marvelettes.
Remember buying the album wh egg m it came out. Bright yellow with red Rose's and GARCIA, clean shaven, in the middle. Great record! RIP Jerry Garcia 🌹✝️🌹
Heard this song, even this rendition, blaring outta 2 very large speakers set up on Shakedown in the lot at Camden, NJ this past summer at Dead & Company...and just as was beginning to "feel it", if yall catch my drift ⚡ G_d Bless Jerry and his friends!
Jerry covered this Smoky Robinson tune on his early solo album "Compliments". That great album included many choice cover tunes and it laid the groundwork for how JGB would operate for many years thereafter. Jerry was a master at choosing a great song to cover and develop it to make it his own. wag wag wag wag wag wag wag wag wag wag wag wag
All true. And the man responsible for picking out the tunes on that album and the repetoire for JGB in general however was NOT Jerry Garcia; it was his best buddy/partner in crime/bass player of JGB John Kahn who was the only member of the group that was there for the entire 20 year run. Also, the. Version on Compliments is as lackluster(relative to the standards expected of a genius like Garcia) as the album is in general. The next two Jerry solo albums Reflections and Cats Under the Stars were masterpieces but Compliments was a relatively unimpressive & dull affair that Jerry made out of obligations to the Record Company and NOT for the joy of it. Even 1982's Run for the Rose's (which did not match the excellence of Reflections and Cats...) was still stronger than Compliments which was without question Jerry's worst album.
@@coreyjsilva3534 ua-cam.com/video/D4sN3CKJJ7A/v-deo.html A rare treat/ occasion....Phil on the bass with JGB instead of Kahn on this night. Merle Saunders joins in on for the first 2 songs in the first set. Sick show. Enjoy.
@@landonmccalmon7121 indeed. Before I ever read about it my ears had already told me that it was simply not something Jerry had invested his heart and soul into. You can hear it in the music and you can see it in the track listing. Smack dab in the middle of Jerry's most prolific songwriting phase and yet it lacks any original tunes.
" I laid such a tender trap, hoping you might fall into it..." One of my favourite J Band songs ever. Whoever posted "intricate and ornate" worded that very well. Correct me if I was wrong, but this is the same version that is on the "Shining Star" disc set. Dazzling ! Thanks for posting this gem.

I think the one person that hit the dislike on this video must have had a little too much of something and wasn't seeing straight, so therefore he clicked the wrong button....either that, or the person is completely blind to what true beauty through music is....
If you truly listen to the solo you will be rewarded with the sound of beauty
I am in LOVE with this version of this song!!! I never heard it before. What a treat to find it!!!
THE BEST COVER I'VE HEARD OF THIS GREAT TUNE!
I love it when Garcia leisurely hits mid-solo around 4:25 minute mark and then dives deep...like 20,000 leagues under the sea deep w/ the effects.....
To solo through all the changes of all three parts on a song like that with clear sense of the melody continuously being hinted at melody for that parts as they go the essential parts of the Melody
The most beatific smile falls across his face when he sings that last verse.
Jerry Garcia playin that MOTOWN soul !!!!!!! From Detroit w/ love
what a fabulous song! Jerry plays it so beautifully
Jerry gave me a whole new appreciation of music, and how to enjoy it...feel it. Grateful for all the shows. Left me wanting more.
Never heard this before. So happy to have come across it!

One of Jerry's most intricate, ornate and ethereal treats he afforded our blessed senses.
Truth
The Marvellete's TAMLA version is EPIC in its own right.

Loved Garcia's gentle, poetic arrangement ko
This is way where it's at. Love you Jerry ❤
this is the best solo on hunter
Jerry fucking captured all of us lol
The solo is like the soundtrack a spider hears as it is building it's web.
Well said
awesome tune.....jerry did great with this!!!!
Beautiful
I saw this show with my buddy Phil was fun times at The Warfield
Great song! Jerry does a superb job with this!!!! :)
Fantastic!
This has a mystique about it that lights me up inside.
I do not miss him .... Jerry will always be with me .... in my heart
I like how the light reflects off the guitar strings during the solo.
Jerry was not lazy about changing strings that's why he always sounded so crisp
jgb 93 great tour & times !!!!!!
My fav song by Jerry (cover)
We miss Jerry
0:35 Jerry is casting out demons..
Great version of this!
Those first few chord strums (!)
Hunter and the Game was on one of his LP's
@wigginoutman, this is indeed, the same version that appears on the album, SHINING STAR -- great allbum!

Guitarist every where take notes
Please just mention that Smokey Robinson wrote this song and it was originally recorded by the Marvelettes. Love the guitar added in this cover.
we know. and weir everywhere.
Yes, it should be mentioned as a courtesy to the writer and the original performers. What a great song.
Duly noted
Who really cares? Did you look for Smoky's version?
@tiedyekeith Its on Compliments, but a much awesome live version is on Shining Star, a sick 2 disc set that all jgb fans must have.
Le Mur, sands. I have great navigation skills, etc. As well, who is intruding in my space.
