Well, regular people didn't wear Edith Head costumes and Harry Winston diamonds back then but I guess the point is no one wore sweat pants, flip flops, or crocs either. This is truly the era of ugliness.

This film got buried (pardon the pun ) after scathing reviews and only showed up sporadically on TV. But its a total camp delight from a bygone time. Holy crow, Shirley looks like she’s having a blast and looking devastating in these almost-there costumes. Hello, Edith Head! Brava! And Gene Kelly’s last all-out number is simply terrific, and more than a little risqué. Fun facts: Marlon Brando was tapped for Paul Newman’s role (and it shows) and Sinatra was to play Robert Mitchum’s role but he was too pricey. Others tagged were Steve McQueen and David Niven. It’s a hoot as is.

@ not at all. Dick can dyke never had a single movie that was a flop from 1963-2018. And if we add broadway hits it goes even further back. Shirley MacLaine, over 30 years of hits. Dean Martin…. (No need to even explain) Paul Newman…. (Ditto). and ALL of them could have carried the movie solo. We don’t have anyone in this current generation of “stars” who can do what stars back then did. We have fine a dozen interchangeable “celebrities” now

Yes, there's Tremendous acting now, and for reasons of bravery never to be replicated, xept like every 80yrs, for real. 80yrs before the '09 housing bubble pop-, the 1929 stock market crashed. This is a guilty pleasure of mine. Written by the famous team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's a very clever nod to film style. Each "husband" is told in a different genre; Dick Van Dyke - silents; Paul Newman - "Nouvelle Vague" French film; Robert Mitchum - kind of Douglas Sirk style; Gene Kelly - 1950's musical. It's also a clever way to get the involvement of some huge stars. They only had to appear for a short time. Some of the passing mentions to ideas are clever: Dick Van Dyke suggests doorknobs that glow in the dark. (Hmm..not a bad idea.) And Paul Newman's "sonic palette" is a more substantial idea than some modern art I've seen. For trivia buffs, the giant computer set used by Dick Van Dyke was also used in "Desk Set" with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. The pool at the Benson house is the same set used for "Something's Got to Give" Marilyn Monroe's last move. (She died before it was completed.)

Originally a vehicle for Marilyn Monroe, who had the bad taste to die before pre-production, so MacLaine got it. Which seems like a strange substitute if you're of an age like me where your first encounter with Shirley MacLaine was when she was the kooky middle age lady who wrote about past lives. (She did become something of a national joke because of that.) Then you look at this movie and realize, holy cow, what an effin BABE. Nice to see her without the usual unflattering haircut she had in those years. I haven't seen this movie in about 30 years and forgot how fun and daring it is. Weirdly meta, for the time. Constantly drawing attention to recent developments in Hollywood and pop culture. I love the spoof of "seggsy" French New Wave films. Even acknowledging that there had been a silent film era was unusual. Surprised to see Gene Kelly willing to parody the types of films that made him a legend. My favorite "marriage", though, was the Mitchum one: that plane. Amazing. And that whole "Lush Budgett" sequence! 20th Century Fox - which distributed this movie, but did not produce it - is lampooned for its absurd extravagance. This is the studio that just destroyed itself with "Cleopatra". (And isn't MacLaine's wig suspiciously like Liz Taylor's hairstyle?) All in all, a milestone in cinematography and set design. Only the bare-bones of a story, but who needs one, really, especially when you got all this other stuff?

I agree she has some far out interests but I have had brief visions of past lives.

Shirley McLaine is one of my all time favourite and one of the greatest movie actresses ever.
Her role of GINNIE in Vincent Minelli's SOME CAME RUNNING - from the first to the last scene - is one of the most touching and moving I've never seen in my life,

Only met them in public situations and like most stars were putting their best face on - they were very nice polite people. Newman didn’t like being recognized by fans or anyone - in 2007 saw him at the corner store bringing stuff to the register and he kept his face turned away from others so wouldn’t be seen.
The MacLaine movie was partly shot freezing outdoors in the winter in Vermont - though she had a cold walked all the way from the trailers with her assistant to bring us a bowl of snacks and candy.

Forgot this one - on the MacLaine movie watched her get in a snowball fight chasing a 70 year old cameraman she was friends with from past projects. I was sitting in the snow and they both jumped over me with Shirley laughing like a kid and yelling “I’m gonna get you Bill!”
