Edith Head having a party & Maclaine holding her own against a slew of Tinsel Towns leading men. A lost gem. Washed away by a blockbuster: released at the same time as The Sound Of Music.
I saw both the same month, and am eternally grateful I saw The Sound of Music first on the stage. It gave me a point of reference for why I disliked the filmed bastardization. McClain was always wonderful in any role.

This is a guilty pleasure of mine. Written by the famous team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's a very clever nod to film style. Each "husband" is told in a different genre; Dick Van Dyke - silents; Paul Newman - "Nouvelle Vague" French film; Robert Mitchum - kind of Douglas Sirk style; Gene Kelly - 1950's musical. It's also a clever way to get the involvement of some huge stars. They only had to appear for a short time. Some of the passing mentions to ideas are clever: Dick Van Dyke suggests doorknobs that glow in the dark. (Hmm..not a bad idea.) And Paul Newman's "sonic palette" is a more substantial idea than some modern art I've seen. For trivia buffs, the giant computer set used by Dick Van Dyke was also used in "Desk Set" with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. The pool at the Benson house is the same set used for "Something's Got to Give" Marilyn Monroe's last move. (She died before it was completed.)

Shirley MacLaine and Dick Van Dyke, two of the Best Actress and Actor in Hollywood, ever! And they didn’t compromise their self respect and moral decency to get a part.
Originally a vehicle for Marilyn Monroe, who had the bad taste to die before pre-production, so MacLaine got it. Which seems like a strange substitute if you're of an age like me where your first encounter with Shirley MacLaine was when she was the kooky middle age lady who wrote about past lives. And that whole "Lush Budgett" sequence! 20th Century Fox - which distributed this movie, but did not produce it - is lampooned for its absurd extravagance. This is the studio that just destroyed itself with "Cleopatra". (And isn't MacLaine's wig suspiciously like Liz Taylor's hairstyle?) All in all, a milestone in cinematography and set design. Newman didn’t like being recognized by fans or anyone - in 2007 saw him at the corner store bringing stuff to the register and he kept his face turned away from others so wouldn’t be seen. The MacLaine movie was partly shot freezing outdoors in the winter in Vermont - though she had a cold walked all the way from the trailers with her assistant to bring us a bowl of snacks and candy.
