Yes, it's a beauty. I had until recently rejected post Gabriel Genesis thinking most of it was more commercial.....then I heard this and bought it immediately. Great album.
So I'm the old school guy, listened to Genesis before Trick. So I am supposed to say ONLY the Gabriel era stuff is valid. No. While Gabriel era is top shelf, how can you not identify Trick ("brilliant" is right) and Wind and Duke as phenomenal works. Still Genesis but on a different plain. And ALL of it is valid, old, new, Gabriel, post-Gabriel. I love it all.
"The sack across my back the sound of sobbing on my shoulder; When suddenly it stopped" LOVE the alliteration! Genesis is so nerdy in such a cool way. Mike is totally underrated as a great bass player. Everyone of these guys are so good each on their own, but together? Awesome. And Phil brings out the best in the whole band. Elevates everyone!
Just love that Genesis back in the day sang about folklore and mythical creatures etc..could u imagine somebody today coming out and singing a song say about someone dancing on a volcano..just will never happen...
Nick, just to let you know, the song "Squonk" by Genesis, from their 1976 album "A Trick of the Tail", is inspired by a mythical creature from American folklore known as the squonk. According to the legend, the squonk is an elusive, melancholic creature that is so ugly that it constantly cries. It is said to be so ashamed of its appearance that it hides from everyone and cries itself into a puddle of tears if captured. The lyrics of "Squonk" tell the story of a man who hunts down the squonk, capturing it in a sack. However, when he opens the sack to show his prize, he finds only tears, as the squonk has dissolved in its own sadness. The song touches on themes of self-loathing, the consequences of vanity, and the elusive nature of beauty. The squonk's story is a metaphor for the destructive power of low self-esteem and how it can lead to self-destruction. Well, I hope this short explanation clarifies your understanding of the lyrics.
Back in the day when I first purchased an album, I would put the headphones on...have the album cover spread open...and follow each song with the lyrics. So, from the very beginning I understood what was being sung. Guys...let me tell you I would venture to say soooo many others out there did the same thing. It was special doing it this way...I miss those days. I must say watching you two is fun...Thank You.
FYI, a Squonk's tears are also mentioned in Steely Dan's "Any Major Dude Will Tell You." I loved this song the first time I heard it. I just wish it didn't fade out.
Hi, just to add that at school (Charterhouse) Mike Rutherford had the book “Fearsome Creatures Of The Lumberwoods” and the Squonk tale inspired the song
A great reaction to one of my favorite songs from my favorite Genesis album. Very much takes me back to my old bedroom with the stereo. I loved watching your faces light up as you transcribe and dive into the lyrics. There’s still a lot of good musicians and good music being made, but this was a special time and it’s great to relive it with you guys. If yall decided to Re listen to all your previous reactions, I would rewatch it because there’s always more to discover. Only Steely Dan and Genesis Had lyrics about the mythological creature, the squonk. I remember looking it up what’s a squonk?
For all of us who were lucky enough to first experience this music back in the day, watching reviewers, especially you two, is like re-experiencing the same joy the music brings, again and again. Thank you for your great "re-reviews"! With Peace and Love to All! (Michael)
The liner notes of the album actually go onto explain that a Squonk is a mythical character (said to live in the forests of Pennsylvania ) that is so ugly that it cries all the time making it easy prey for hunters who simply follow a tear stained path. The only problem is that if you corner one or trap one, it will simply dissolve itself into nothing but tears.
What I love about this album other than the GREAT tracks is the artwork. Every song has a little characterization on the cover. You'll notice the "Squank" in the bag as described by Phil in the song.
I’ve loved genesis most of my life, watching you guys react is a great way to feel like listening to them for the first time, totally reinvigorated my love for them, thank you
Hi Guys !!!! ....Woohoooooooo ! Ya got there in the end !! Nick > "It gives me goosebumps" ...Finally ! Lol. I just love on the album the way tracks connect into the finale' "Los Endos" which gives me even bigger goose bumps. I listen to "Entangled" on headphones then crank up the volume for "Squonk" and it's amazing ! I am a very happy chappy you now get it ! I was confused you were not liking it at first yet loved "Los Endos" ... Now you know and yes the lyrics for "Squonk" are so good. Another little piece of info ...The album cover, has drawings of all of the characters in all of the tracks ...inc' Squonk, who is the little rat like creature crying, on the back of the album with the track listings. What is brilliant about you both is you give 2nd chances and are not afraid to change your opinion. This being the 1st abum without Peter Gabriel, they had to make their mark. I think all of these made up characters could very well have been in nursery rhymes and made me think of "Nursery Cryme". Was this their train of thought ? Thankyou for such a great re-visit. Jim X
One of those fairly rare albums where every track truely is fantastic. Los Endos (the last track on the album) is a stunning instrumental that brings the whole album together in one song. BTW, this is another album where the cd sounds INCREDIBLE in the car...if you have a decent enough system to get the most out of it. 🙂
One of my favorite drum tracks of all time. I think it ranks with John Bonham's best. Phil builds tbe intensity over tbe course of the whole song and you don't realize it until we are in the last verses and he is hammering tbe living shit out of those cymbals! The drum production is superb on this whole album.
Saw this concert back in 76 after this album came out. Austin, Tx loved Genesis!! A rare lp with no so so songs. This album is a gem!! More live stuff.
I can't tell you how many times I initially didn't like a song, and then after a few listens fall in love with it. That's one of the drawbacks with these reactions is that sometimes it takes a while for the song to grow on you. Like when I see these people reacting to Suppers Ready or Close To The Edge I'm like okay but I'm not expecting you to really love it initially. Of course it can grab you immediately but very often it takes a while.
Nick and Lex, great always to see you do Genesis, but hey guys you still have not done Afterglow, one of their most famous tracks the closing track on Wind and Wuthering, the absolute fan favourite from very Genesis Live Concert as a set closer.
Great song, Love Genesis, great reaction, I'm happy with whatever you two decide to do, I'm here for the long hall, NicknLex family forever, Libra's 4 Life.
When I first heard the album I had the gate fold open and followed along with the lyrics…it was part of the experience..in that way you understand the whole thing so much better.
One of my favorite album covers and liners. All the lyrics and drawings. "Alive at both ends but a little dead in the middle". Fantastic! From the liner notes: "The Squonk is of a very retiring disposition and due to it's ugliness, weeps constanly. It is easy prey for hunters who simply follow a tear stained trail. When cornered, it will desolve itself into tears. True or false?"
This is the song that when they were auditioning for a new singer Phil would sing this one to teach the one auditioning. The rest is history as they say.........
Love it...Thanks. Like you I wasn't fussed to start with but I love it now. Banks's storytelling? How the hell can you get tearful over a story about a mythical creature???... I do.
Otra obra maestra de Genesis: "Trick Of The Tail". Junto a "Wind And Wuthering". El año '76, la cumbre de esta enorme banda de rock progresivo. Y una de mis favoritas.
My favorite song off the album, and was the one that made me realize that there was no way Phil could both sing and drum live at the same time, since the lyrics and drum parts are syncopated. Mike Rutherford is insane on this cut, almost as good as Geddy or Chris. Speaking of Chris, if you are seeing Jon Anderson with the Band Geeks you'll swear you are at a Yes concert circa 1976 or so.
I'm another who first knew this album and then went back to the Peter Gabriel era to catch up! My friends' band did this one, and their great drummer sang it, (where, as you may recall, when Genesis toured this album, Bill Bruford played drums, as Phil was out front singing.) I love all the lyrics on TOTT, but these are particularly poignant. Wonderful imagery! You might just pick out songs here and there that you have reacted to and don't catch the lyrics after repeated listenings, or songs commenters have said you must pay attention to. This was fun, watching you get deeper into one of my favorite albums' best songs! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie
I loved the music so much back in the day that I never listened to the lyrics. But now I have learned how important the lyrics are for nearly every band, but especially Genesis. I just finished a whole essay on the symbolism behind the lyrics on the album 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'. They really are equal to the great music. (I know you guys are not as high on the album as I am)
Although I continued to buy and listen to the new Genesis, I missed Peter from the day he left. Gone was the real mythology and the meandering storylines, but then again I suppose all things must change....
I've known this Genesis song since the mid-80s and never read the lyrics. Even after watching this video, I still haven't seen the lyrics! That being said, I've always preferred the studio version over any live one, great reaction guys!
My favourite genesis album, it used to be on the Pubs juke box, think I played it to death, I was asked by the landlord who also liked it to paint the poacher and squonk on the pub wall full size, it was there for ten years. It holds special special memories for me.😊
What a great way to welcome the weekend. My favorite track from my favorite Genesis album! Have a awesome weekend everyone! Nick your hair is longer than Lex's. 😀 Love the outfit tonight Lex. You are looking fabulous!
I’ve always felt the opening guitar was meant to sound like sobbing… This one grew on me!! Love it!! Based on a fictional creature Mike read about in a book while visiting the states. “All are not huntsmen who can blow the huntsmen’s horn and by the look of this one, I’ve not got much to fear.”
Very glad you're giving more attention to lyrics... maybe do a post section where you talk about the lyrical sections for songs. Genesis lyrics during this time were of course more fantasy and myth themes, then they slowing got more direct over time, dealing with current social issues in the 80s/90s. All of the members of Genesis were brilliant songwriters.
Wonderful relistening. Ok, I think it‘s time to get back to listening to Quadrophenia. You more than one time talked about how you didn‘t like it. Shocked me. Out of all the countless albums still my favourite since 1973. Beste Grüße aus good old Germany
I'm surprised as Squonk is referenced in the Steely Dan song "Any Major Dude" "Have you ever seen a Squonk's tears? Well, look at mine The people on the street have all seen better times...."
Prob not the song being referenced, but the Squonk itself? A mythical creature from a Pennsylvania legend that inspired Mike and Tony to write a song about it.
I knew the moment you hated this song on Patreon you'd come around eventually...It was inevitable! Coming out of the beautiful ending of "Entangled", then brief silence, then that amazing pounding open...Perfection! As you now say, "I LOVE THIS GOD DAMN SONG!"
I love so much the drama of that transition from Entangled into this. Great point! In the '80s I was listening to this '70s Genesis constantly and I could never get it turned up loud enough with my Kenwood amp/receiver. This stuff sounds just STUNNING on a big powerful hifi!
You should check out the live version, on Genesis _Seconds Out_ album. It doesn't fade out at the end but comes to a great conclusion. A lot of the bass on this was done with Moog Taurus pedals, which was a signature part of Mike Rutherford's sound back in the 70s. That _bump--bump bump bump_ you hear at the beginning is not played on bass guitar but bass pedals. Excellent reaction, guys!😎
Just imagine if we all had our own NicknLex parenting numbers. Someone like Greybeard would probably be #30, and Michele Michele might be #10 perhaps. I would probably be about #35768, if not later! Anyway, what a great idea to re-listen to 'Squonk'. Nick, I remember quite clearly the full song, sorry album reaction (lol) and the shockwaves that reverberated through the comments on Patreon when you boldly stated that you didn't like the song. I had to take a walk and calm myself, finally returning to the keyboard to solemnly write that you will probably like it in time. I'm joking of course, but who knew it would become this monster that has taken over your life!!! Re-listens certainly are great fun, and the more the merrier, but if you stop doing reactions you won't get to hear all the great stuff still out there! Including more Genesis songs for sure! That was great fun Nick and Alexia, it fills my heart with joy when you appreciate a song that's lived in my heart for 48 years.
I know that you have listened to most of this great album by now, just wanted to make sure that you include a listen to the worthy "Robbery, Assault, and Battery", some great stuff!!
You double the pleasure when you listen to the lyrics as well but I get it also makes it harder to take it all in at once. Your audio is great, I haven't listened to this for ages and it sounded amazing! Cheers.
I didn’t like Supper’s Ready and never re listened to it after the first time. Decades later I love it so much, it blows my mind. Maybe I had to grow up.
Several highlights for me. Mike is playing his double neck Rickenbacker and the Mr. Bassman bass pedals and he keeps switching off to the base during the chorus. This of course was Mike’s Hallmark and that guitar is in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Also, Phil has said that this drumming was an attempt to come close to Led Zeppelin. The drums are super simple, but played incredibly hard.
When Trick of The Tail, and Wind and Wuthering were recorded, Phil was also in the jazz/ fusion band Brand X. He was also heavily influenced by jazz/ fusion drummer Billy Cobham. So you can really hear that influence on these two albums. So that might be the change in the drumming that Nick is hearing.
Remember, this album was supposed to be sung by somebody else, as in a replacement for Peter Gabriel, but not Phil Collins. Squonk was one of the songs that would take a lot of hard singing and specifically in an upper range. As they auditioned singers, Phil would do all the demo tracks, and as it turned out, Squonk was the one song that actually pushed everyone over the edge, including Phil Collins and his wife at the time. It really was a test for Phil to see if he could sing the really big songs as well as songs like Ripples and Mad Man Moon, and of course Entangled. This album was originally planned to be more instrumental than vocals seeing that Peter left, but amazingly, it went the opposite direction. Phil was launched!
Hehe Lexi . . . The "Nickisms" keep coming 🤭😊 Its such an awesome album, glad you took another try at the song, Nick. Which is my 2nd fave track next to "Dance on a Volcano". "The squonk is a mythical creature whose myths originated in Pennsylvania during the late nineteenth century. The myths claim the squonk is an ugly creature who constantly cries and hides from others because it is ashamed of its appearance. The song is a retelling of a myth about a hunter trying to capture the creature."
So glad you both re-did this reaction, as a Patreon member I saw the initial reaction , and I thought OMG Nick did not like ‘Squonk’, easily a top 10 Genesis track IMO 0:20 . To be honest that is the beauty of Genesis, there is a lot of depth to many of their tracks, that even though they have been part of my life for over 40 years, to this day still find new subtleties in their music. “Trick of the tail” is my favourite Genesis album, although “Selling England” is not far behind. Looking forward to “Afterglow” reaction, which is one of those Genesis tracks that is so much better live.
His drumming got more intricate because at this time he was getting involved with 'Brand X', which was fusion and required him to be more intricate, so it spilled over. Wot Gorilla? on W&W was originally going to be a Brand X track.
The best versions of Genesis earlier songs is actually on the live album called "Seconds Out". To me it's strange the "Genesis fans" don't recomend that album for songs like this one.
This album is my favorite. Wait, wait.....'The Lamb' is my favorite. Whatever, Phil said he put his 'Bonham Hat' on for this one.......except maybe when he wants to make little furry friend sounds.
You should listen to the live version of 'Squonk', which opens their 1977 double album Seconds Out. This live version is much looser and less static than the studio version, in my opinion.
Maybe when you listened alone and now with Alexia, so it's a different moment in time with another mood to focus. Any music is changing when you hear it with somebody else or even several people. Genesis from that area is still difficult in details even if this song is one of the straightest of Trick of the tail, but it's true that the lyrics here are very busy, it's a full story. Better to have the lyrics under your sight. Then the subtilities of the song are coming out progressively, and it's becoming better and better 😎🎶
Besitos a Marley.
I remember when you said you didn't like Squonk, thinking I bet you'll come around soon. You're just not in the right space or something. btw, even with a re-listen it's your reaction that makes the video, so yes, 'with' the music. ThX guys 🎵😎👍 P.S. Even though we had the lyrics on the LP liner notes or sometimes printed on the record sleeve, I would never read them until later. Music first.
Hey Nick hey Lex, when " Robbery assault and battery" from the Trick? It is another trip. Ciao da Italia, born in Puglia in Barletta, Bari, live in Ferrara between Venezia e Bologna.
I believe this performance got Phil the gig replacing Peter on vocals!! It's a masterpiece and a very good Pete imitation! Did you react to Ripples yet?? I'll have to do a search....

Following Alexis’s line of thinking you guys could listen to the song on your phone and then turn the recording on as you then react to it…
Always one of my favorite Genesis songs, listened to it constantly back in the 70’s.
A Trick of the Tail is by far my favourite Genesis album and, in my personal opinion, one of the best prog rock albums ever recorded.
Yes, it's a beauty. I had until recently rejected post Gabriel Genesis thinking most of it was more commercial.....then I heard this and bought it immediately. Great album.
Totally agree. A near perfect prog album, and certainly my favourite album by the band. The songs, the cover art, the production..all sublime.

A Trick of the Tail has always been my favorite start to finish Genesis album. Incredible. And it stands the test of time.
And the other from 1976. Both are most excellent. ( W &W )

You more than one time talked about how you didn‘t like it. Shocked me. Out of all the countless albums still my favourite since 1973.
Beste Grüße aus good old Germany
I'm surprised as Squonk is referenced in the Steely Dan song "Any Major Dude"
"Have you ever seen a Squonk's tears? Well, look at mine
The people on the street have all seen better times...."
Prob not the song being referenced, but the Squonk itself? A mythical creature from a Pennsylvania legend that inspired Mike and Tony to write a song about it.
@@adriangoodrich4306 LOL,..think you're right. Looked it up. Steely Dan's song came out about a year and a half before.
Thanks. (I'm getting old. :)
Great to see you two together enjoying a cool song! 😎
Greetings, Lex is so nice! I am huge Genesis fan ... here is all about Tony, the Master!
Love the highlights Alexia! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Feb 23, 1977. Madison Square Garden. Of course it was amazing.
The drumming on this song is phenomenal.
I enjoy the re-listen (got to hear the music).
It's astonishing how may elements from 'Abacab' (5 years later) are here already.
Tony's and Mike's songs are always the best.
YEP !
Often....not Always....Entangled (Steve Hackett) 😉
Nope. What happened after Peter and Steve left?
@@mauromontobbio8522 No Entangled was not composed by Hachett and Banks, Rutherford !
@@Fibonacci64 The songs stayed great proving that Tony and Mike are the songwriters of the band.
Live Mike played bass pedals, then used a double neck guitar, bass on one neck and 12 string electric on the other.
The bass your hear is bass pedals. In certain areas
Squonk dance on a volcano and los endos are all linked by certain musical passages
9:57.....you said Alexa, " ..what everyone was doing was so fucking good ".
Phil Collins is at the toppermost of the proggermost of drumming. You should listen to the first two Brand X albums if you haven't.
The live version from Genesis’ live album Seconds Out is even better! 🐶
The best songs always take time to sink in
Hehe Lexi . . . The "Nickisms" keep coming 🤭😊
Its such an awesome album, glad you took another try at the song, Nick.
My favorite line, 'You'll never have the things you thought you should have had, and you'll not get them now."
It's a powerful song, very Genesis.
It's bloody gorgeous!
Great drumming by Phil Collins & he wasn't too shabby as "replacement" singer to Peter Gabriel!
The best versions of Genesis earlier songs is actually on the live album called "Seconds Out". To me it's strange the "Genesis fans" don't recomend that album for songs like this one.
Yes, I agree.
Suonata in una cover band, per niente facile come sembra, specialmente da cantare.Altro capolavoro
Yes, I agree.
Great track
Love Genesis and this song was allegedly supposed to be fashioned after Led Zeppelin's Kashmir
Please listen to WHEN IN ROME 2007 live " in the cage medley / afterglow" . Playing to 500.000 people. It's mindblowing.
Greetings from Germany.
Wow. A lyric video, huh? It's a great song but the lyrics can be hard to make out. A nice little mythic creature, the Squonk is 😅
They were impossible to figure out. Even after hearing it 25 Squonk times or more. This was good!!
Soy fan del rock progresivo!! Cómo no me va a gustar Génesis 😃 Peter Gabriel y Phil Collins !! Steve !! Rock del mejor !!
you should check out the live versions of this one from the Duke tour
Besitos a Marley.
Otra cosa... NO puedo creer que todavía no hayan reaccionado a la majestuosa trilogía que cierra Wind & Wuthering.
Have you noticed that they reprise Squonk at the end of Los Endos?
I remember when you said you didn't like Squonk, thinking I bet you'll come around soon. You're just not in the right space or something.
btw, even with a re-listen it's your reaction that makes the video, so yes, 'with' the music. ThX guys 🎵😎👍
Mike is also playing a lot of bass pedals on this song
When they played it live, Mike played 12 string (the main riff is Mike's 12-string) and bass pedals.
Mike kicks moog taurus bass pedals for most of the song.
I believe this performance got Phil the gig replacing Peter on vocals!! It's a masterpiece and a very good Pete imitation! Did you react to Ripples yet?? I'll have to do a search....
Squonk kick ass.
You just need to have a good look at the album artwork. It paints a beautiful picture of what this album is about
10:30- Oh no, no no you don’t. That’s my concept. My mustachioed reactions channel is a reaction and a re-reaction channel. You guys get your own ideas😂 😂😂😂❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
11:39 - To be honest with you, I am all for the suggestions that you’re making please do this. Yes, yes, yes. Following Alexis’s line of thinking you guys could listen to the song on your phone and then turn the recording on as you then react to it…
❤
