Finally great piece of advice for frequency seperation it is soooooo overdone by almost everyone! Most photographer/retoucher goes overboard with their processes too much dodge & burn, too much skin retouching and poor choices on color grading.

All you said above. But main issue is FS here, which shouldn't be used in 95% of cases. As long as you work on regular portrait there is no reason to use FS. Then as you said, most images are overdone and most retouchers I see have heavy hand. Interesting enough, there is more work opportunities in very settled natural retouching, yet they chose to do heavy retouch.

Hello Sir, thank you so much for sharing this type of contents. My question is how can grab first retouching job.

I will make the video on the subject. But I have to say answer is quite simple. Really good portfolio and social media exposure. If complete beginner, need to try to catch contacts with photographers and first focus on building portfolio.

The topic is spot on, well said.
I would like to see, how do you put texture to the face (editorial method)
    Keep up the good work,
    cheers man!

Hi Daniel. In most of the cases I never put any texture to the fact. Especially when it comes to editorials. Editorials are lightly retouched, clean up, and some DB, plus some color grading, if digital could add noise.

Have you ever tried to retouch 70 photos for fashion catalog in 4 days? If yes, you know what is the difference between using DB and FS ;-)
    Bye

Hey yes I did. I was retouching 40 lookbook images a day. Had one project where I had over 80 images and had to do it in two days. In fact cookbooks are big part of my work. And I really don't see point of using it in catalogues. I have to say I am able to retouch quite fast. All I do for catalogues is clean up on empty layers, and I do really minimal DB when required.

So what is so bad about frequency? A "few words" stretched out for ten minutes but I don't think you really explain/specify the evils of frequency seperation. I assume it's because so many retoucher overdo it, but you aren't very clear.

I've definitely been guilty of overdoing FS. BUT, I've learned to use it judiciously and I don't think I overdo it anymore. What frustrates me about people saying FS looks fake, but really professionally retouched images look fake to me sometimes, with the textured skin added on a 50% grey layer. So that fake is okay but FS isn't? The thought of doing D&B with curves makes me want to poke my eyes out. For D&B, I use FS2.0, with clone stamp on light or dark blend mode, flow 2% with Solar layer on as my helper layer. If it's too much, erase and start over or reduce the opacity of the layer.
